Newcastle Reported After Top Dutch Playmaker

9:17 pm, Tuesday, February 4th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 32 Comments

There is a  report in CaughtOffside tonight that Newcastle are interested in 30 year-old Dutch International play-maker Rafael van der Vaart, but there seems no way that Newcastle will be bringing in a 30 year-old – well as long as Newcastle are owned by Mike Ashley.

rafael van der vaart

Rafael van der Vaart - turns 31 next week

With Newcastle having failed to make a permanent signing in the last two transfer windows, and with a number of our players certain to be leaving the club this summer, Newcastle will need to bring in quite a few players over the summer months.

So we will see lots of different reports that we are after this player or that, but if the player is 30 years-old or older – then those reports probably have not much  truth to them.

The player turns 31 next Tuesday, and he was good at Tottenham and has Premier League experience,  and certainly has loads of skill,  but one of his big weaknesses under Harry Redknapp was that he was never too eager to track back and help out in defense.

Monaco are one of the clubs after him, and with the French club being owned by a Billionaire who is very willing to spend lots of money on the team, he could well end up at the French club in the summer, and leave Hamburg, whom  he joined after leaving Tottenham in the summer of 2012.

We doubt very much that Newcastle are after Rafael, or that if we were interested in him, he would want to come to Newcastle.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

can’t see this happening in the slightest, goes against everything we have ever done under ashley

has laudrup just been sacked , or is that old news ? when did that happen ?

  • 3 9 // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:21 PM

Do me a favour, Ed: leave out such obvious rubbish.

    Only saying…………..

    31
    Big wages
    No chance

    Stuart
A couple of hours ago, it was weird as there was a debate going on about him at the time!

I am seriously worried as to the state we will be in by the time next season kicks off ( a long way off I know, but recent events have been sickening). We’ve lost our best player, we have to loan strikers and two very poor strikers on our books. Contracts are slowly running down for some of our better players and there is no clear direction that I can see at least, that we are heading in other than it being headlong into yet another turbulent storm.

If there is not an about-face from Ashley this summer I really fear the worse

  • 7 croftus5678 // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:23 PM

vaart is a top top class player and would be perfect replacement for cabaye even if he is 30yo.

I can’t see Ashley making a change, not sure why there’s so much excitement to laudrup being sacked, he won’t be coming to us.

I’ve come on here tonight specially to say that this story dosen’t warrant a response.

  • 10 G // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:24 PM

I would have taken vdv a couple of years ago, but now he will be looking for his last big pay day. Next target for me please.

  • 11 stuart no9 // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:26 PM

wow – things do happen fast , history now then hahaha

  • 12 9 // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:27 PM

Ah, mushy @9: very profound, my friend, very profound.

  • 13 Transfer Sage // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:27 PM

    jack

we have those 4 strikers you mention, gosling is out of contract, hba will have 1 year left, santon, colo, wilo, saylor, marv, elliott will all only have 2 years left on theres.

We could be in a very difficult situation.

  • 14 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:27 PM

    Sage
Why would he go for Laudrupp, Pardews hitting his target of top 10 that’s all he’s interested in

  • 15 manxpie // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:27 PM

jesus christ a link to actually buying a player on feb 04 i hope this is the last for at least 3 months!

    repost

how is laudrup a “top manager” he’s just been sacked for winning 7 outa 34 games!? thats not relegation form thats kamikaze form!

  • 16 Transfer Sage // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:30 PM

    tads

exactly…pardew is doing everything ashley wants

    manx

there is more to it though i feel, reports the board not happy with him not committing his future to the club, breeds uncertainty, then injuries, europe…lots of stuff happening to make his job difficult (some self inflicted mind)

Still not convinced he is a top manager, but he is a good manager i feel.

It’s really worrying mate and thats why this past window was a massive one for us and we have completely fu**ed it up……………. again

If anyone thinks that it will now get better simply because Kinnear has been sent packing then they are in for one massive shock.

  • 18 Transfer Sage // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:33 PM

    jack

with us losing shola, remy and de jong we will need to spend money to bring in at the very least 2 strikers (8mil for de jong probably then another)

it’s the club making more mistakes, they should be adding 2/3 a window just to make sure then when people are out of contract/leave we don’t have to go out and buy 6/7/8 at once.

  • 19 9 // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:34 PM

Jack @ 17 : of course things have got better because JFK’s been sacked. Try this : would you rather have the ludicrous JFK in our club, or out of our club?

    See what I mean?

  • 20 stuart no9 // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:35 PM

anyone informed Swansea owners , there is a perfect replacement for laudrup right here by the name of AP. or if hes not good enough JFKs looking for something to do- or take them both.

  • 21 croftus5678 // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:36 PM

for next season we will def not have remy
colo will more than likely move on
    gos and guti will go
newton i reckon will also go along with abied
    tav can say bye bye
    and ober gone imo
    and shola gone.

9 players some usefull some not.

luuk i reckon will stay and maybe marv will stay if he gets enough game time now cabaye is gone.

i’m going to get ambitious now though and hope for atleast 3 1st team capable players (after luuk) coming in next summer :-) (or else no season ticket for me i’m afraid)

  • 22 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:36 PM

    Sage
He was never going to commit tbf, he always had an air that he thought he was bigger than the club
He’s never really settled at a club either

Not only do i not think Ashley would go for him, I don’t think he’d come here, i think he’ll want to go to a “big” club

  • 23 JackButler // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:37 PM

    Sage

Agree mate, plus we will still be open to any bids that come in for any of our players.

I said a while ago that I thought that Ashley was starting to instill his exit plan and tbh I’m trying to convince myself that Ashley will sell up and move on this summer and that everything will be okay…………………it’s not working though :D

  • 24 manxpie // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:38 PM

sage aye thats all i was pointing out he imo certainly ain’t a top manager but i find it strange certain people want him and despise pardew who has had alot worse tbf

  • 25 JackButler // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:38 PM

9 – Nothing will change just because Kinnear’s gone. If you want proof of that then just take a look at the way we were run before he arrived.

  • 26 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:39 PM

If were going to go for it i wanna see a De Boer! Let’s go for it properly!!

  • 27 Big Pappa Cissé // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:41 PM

VDV ? . Top player but no chance of us paying his wages .

  • 28 9 // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:49 PM

    Jack @25:
    “Nothing will change…”
    a) JFK will not be drawing a salary
    b) We will no longer have to whinge at how useless JFK is

I agree these are tivial matters, but still, “Nothing will change” is incorrect; inaccurate; too sweeping a statement, while, (I agree) resulting in nothing OF IMPORTANCE changing – just a question of how careful we are in expressing our opinion.
    Sorry.

    Interesting that Laudrup’s been sacked.

What’s also interesting are the comments about Laudrup on this fans blog site.

The comments sound as though they could have been written by some of our very own Pardew haters.

    http://www.forzaswansea.com/2014/02/blogger-q-five-tough-swansea-city.html?m=1

To all you Pardew out-Laudrup in advocates, be careful what you wish for!

  • 30 Sav // Feb 5, 2014 at 12:46 AM

No point having Carr as an asset to the club (maybe our best asset) if you are going to buy VanDerVaart at the end of his career for biggish money and zero sell-on value. If Carr is good we should exploit that and get the next VanDerVaart, not the old one. You have to believe he’s out there somewhere and that (like Liam Neeson) Carr will find him…

  • 31 Expat MAG // Feb 5, 2014 at 2:45 AM

I read the headlines, then thought who this top-dutch play maker can be!!!! At 31, VWV will not be coming to the toon, but bringing in more dutch players to play alongside Krul, Anita and De Jong (if he makes the grade) will be good as we have too many french in the side.

Nothing against the French, but need a better balance and spread of nationalities, as Ashley is not going to pay big money to bring decent English players to Newcastle…..
