Newcastle Man Up For Player Of The Month

9:34 pm, Wednesday, February 5th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 92 Comments

Newcastle United’s 22 year-old full-back James Tavernier has been on loan at Rotherham United since late November in England’s third tier, and so far he has played 12 games with two goals, and he has recently been nominated for the Sky Bet League One Player of the Month award.

james tavernier

James Tavernier – up for Player of the Month

James joined Rotherham on 28th November 2013 on an initial short-term emergency loan deal, but he has done so well that the loan deal has been extended until the end of the season, at which time James will have one year of his three-year contract remaining at Newcastle.

During his time at Newcastle James has been on loan at Gateshead, Carlisle United, Sheffield Wednesday, Milton Keynes Dons and Shrewsbury Town and has played 64 games with two goals while on loan, and he has 10 first team appearances so far for Newcastle.

James is on a four-man short-list of the League One’s top-performing players for last month, with the other three players being Nicky Ajose of Peterborough, Scott Cuthbert of Leyton Orient) and Marcello Trotta of Brentford.

This winner will be announced on Friday, and let’s hope the Newcastle man wins the award.

James will have a chance this pre-season to show how much he has progressed while being on loan at Rotherham for more than half a season, where he has been very impressive.

21 year-old Haris Vuckic is also on loan at Rotherham, and has played 11 times with one terrific goal for the Millers, and he has 18 first team appearances for Newcastle so far, with one goal.

Rotherham are currently 5th in League One, with 51 points from 29 games and are in a play-off position, and 10 points off an automatic promotion spot.

Comments welcome.

as far as the spelling is concerned, you may notice words ending or containing utterly irrelevant letters. This is becaus my fingers are too big for the screen keypad on my s3. I hope that placates your spelling nazi urges

Your reaction to what you see as disrespect to JFK is stupid, considering the disrespect he himself showed to the job and the players. At least the fans were united for once in their oppinion of JFK, although you seem to have scuppered that.

    Well done.

    Online, TADS, others
It was Ciaran/Ruddy who took a swipe at Torq as ITKS although it was done obliquely and without direct reference.

He then had another go later.

    59Ciaran // Nov 24, 2013 at 12:01 AM

Ironic how you are indirectly slating Indykaila saying as you are about as a reliable source of information as he is.

Torq, who I perceive as someone who has better things to do than get wound up by immature WUMs, has been reluctant to participate since.

Which, in my opinion, is a loss to all of us.

  • 3 BandB // Feb 5, 2014 at 9:52 PM

Torq Toon paid the price for his many copyists.
They saw the way people hung on his words, and thought they could do the same.
Except that they were very quickly exposed as complete arses, which Torq isn’t, by a long way.
I wish he would come back too.

  • 4 Ancientcoptic // Feb 5, 2014 at 9:54 PM

You have to hand it to Mike Ashley, if there surely is a conspiracy afoot – he is covering all the angles.

Hires Pardew: based on gambling loans that must be paid back.

Gives Pardew 8 year contract, so as to dilute that contract via repayments to himself.

Engages in selling off land surrounding St James’ park… declaring none of these moves in the books.

Uses free advertising around the stadium, not only to gain market control of the sports material sector, but to also stall the loan repayments of the club, back to himself. (maintaining debt to himself)

Pushes JK out of the club; reasoning being a drop in season ticket subscribers. (Club Propaganda which JK was possibly ‘in on’)

Ashley uses a source to tell Sky Sports that 4 signings are possibly on the way, at the start of the previous transfer window.

JK is used as a sacrificial lamb, over the sale of Cabaye, to which not enough money was raised from the sale. (We are to believe Ashley does not sanction with signature – buys/sales)

Llambias resigned over the hiring of JK. (A ploy to stall the buying of a certain centre-back)

    The sale of Milner.

    The buying of Rangers.

The Wonga symbol pushed not only onto the strip, but now forced all over the stadium, only circumvented by Wonga paying for St James’ park to keep its name.

Last but not least… Kevin Keegan hired to give the club some form of hope, only for Keegan being forced into constructive dismissal – Keegan then pursuing the club for finances to buy out his contract… which he won. NUFC as a club paying for compensation for Keegan, which does not come from the pocket of Mike Ashley, but the club itself.

All of this, whilst the club is allegedly ‘for sale.’

All of the above has its merits, it would not take much for Ashley to come out and appease the fans somewhat, with a statement about his direction.

I think Ashley wanted to be seen as a cult of personality by taking over Newcastle… it all went wrong when we were relegated, now he has assumed the role of dictator.

  • 5 MosesNUFC // Feb 5, 2014 at 10:00 PM

I think we need to make an agreement with Michael Laudrup, that we will sack pardew the day after the end of the season and appoint him, that would give us stability in management as he’d bring a new philosophy of football that every geordie craves. He won a trophy in his first BPL season which IS the sign of a good manager. And i think we should give graham carr a higher role, maybe as a DOF, and get Cortese in as managing director or whatever.

I think cortese, carr and laudrup is an amazing combination to get in players within ashleys low budget, Michu 2m, cabaye 4m, think who we could get, and it suits all parties, including ashley.

Only flaw is, ashley just won’t do this.

tiantoon, i think laudrup would make a good connection with geordies because of his style of football, we’re the best fans in the world, welshmen more into their rugby than football. I think laudrup would come here if he had the offer, because he’d want to prove himself to everyone

I’m no fan of alan pardew, but after heaping praise on laudrup i’m not 100% sure he is the manager i thought he was.

May I just add, I was sceptical myself about how much of an inside line Torq had. Though I think he heard genuine stuff.
For me his real talent was to read the tea leaves, and come up with sometimes very accurate insights.
That is in lots of ways a better skill than just reporting gossip.

  • 9 Markaccus // Feb 5, 2014 at 10:05 PM

Torq is missed by most. Never claimed to be an ITK but his job allowed him to hear certain things that “bloke doon the club” did not get to hear. He does pop up occasionally but he doesnt provide us with the tip bits he used to.

    Repost in response to repost,
    Jeff,Have you resovled it ?
Moses,It’s been pointed out that Laudrup has seven wins in thirty odd games despite being backed in the summer, as you probably know I’m not a fan of Pardew but it would be interesting to see how he would have fared if Bony had of been signed along with a decent winger.

Of course, only the sale of Milner is true. The rest is conjecture. My personal take on it is that most of the things written here and other places about Ashley, Pardew et al are all bull. The problem lies in that with Ashley being adverse to making any comment, leads to people just fabricate stories. Eventually they become the truth” as they are repeated often enough and he will rarely if ever rebuff them.

I think you’ll find hell freezes over before Ashley makes a comment. Go on, can anyone tell me – does he sound posh, a southern softy or a bit of a barrow boy. Very few know. My lip reading isn’t that good so I haven’t a clue about what he may have said or is thinking.

  • 19 Rebbeca from 7 miles away // Feb 5, 2014 at 10:27 PM

Big fan of the blog a long time yet never got round to posting.. I’d like to echo Bandbs sentiments and ask Torq to share his views again as I always found him upbeat and worth a read!

I’ve never been a big fan of Pardew in his time at the club, don’t like his football philosophy of defending and relying on individual brilliance for a goal. In his tenure nothing has really changed all seasons have been similar, really close games which easily could have went either way with two or three decent performance thrown in.
In all of the campaigns he seems to have only have faith in a limited amount of his squad, the changes made at Cardiff would have worked out a lot different if the players brought in had some sort of form or fitness by being rotated into the 1st team for at least two or three starts each with sub appearances too. Young Sammy hasn’t really looked a world beater but looks like a different player when there’s more 1st team players round him, Where’s Haidra Dummet Mbiwa starts and there’s more than them that don’t get a sniff when the teams flying and should be being refreshed not only to save players but also make them know their place isn’t guaranteed and to try different things.

But for me the Stoke game said everything that needs to be known about Pardew.
We all know what happened but in his post match interview he said something along the lines of “I knew things weren’t working and was hoping to get to half time and change things” .. So in reality instead of changing what he knew to be wrong left it hoping for the miracle he got in two players being sent off for stoke.
We get to half time at 1 1 and I think come on lad their down to 9 men you’ve goat give Cisse a half this is what he needs for his confidence, and what happens Shola Ameobi… Was he kidding, why? If we need to hold up the ball against 9 men where in trouble and out of two players who can’t score I’d take the chance on the one that moves..

But at the end of the day the buck stops with Ashley he shows his ambition by his choice of manager dof etc.
In my eyes I think Ashley just sees us as advertising and that’s it, in the news good or bad free publicity an it ******* stinks.
What boils my sis is the way were told ?e can’t compete yet he stops revenue streams into the club with his free adds, out sourcing the catering from the ground etc etc.
I can’t say I see everything he does but what I do I dislike and he’s shady as f**k…

Problem is what can we do, scream and shout a bit but unless we affected his other business he won’t leave why should he even with a empty ground he’d still be raking it in with tv money alone.
It’s a sad day when the main talk of your club is money and not a match..

  • 20 Ancientcoptic // Feb 5, 2014 at 10:28 PM

Small World – I would be very hesitant over interest in Laudrup.

Muelensteen would be a very different story. (If as reported he may become available)

I do not view Laudrup as an improvement on Pardew.

I recall Dalglish getting us to a cup final, and my worst memories as a Newcastle fan, are under the management of Dalglish.

We can at times play football under Pardew, I would keep him for now.

Vuckic the attacking midfielder who scores 1 goal in 11 games in league 1.

I really hope people aren’t still pinning their hopes on him.

On Laudrup, he always had to be judged on his 2nd season. I know they won a cup but they had bloody Bradford in the final. Pardew got Liverpool and got it to penalties.

I know Saturday was a horror show but I stick by pardew. I think he’s a decent manager.

I had probs with it on the stock browser on my BB Z10 so downloaded a secure browser just for the blog!

Laudrup has done little to nothing to improve Swansea… the only improvement being the signing of Michu.

Swansea are still passing the ball around as they were trained to do under past managers, this is probably down to a recruitment process of players that were passers.

The longer Swansea play under Laudrup, the more toothless and clueless they look.

Laudrup has Swansea mixing between high ball and wing play into the box… he is totally reliant on Swansea’s old style of football, with no clue in how to unlock defences. (I guess Bony shooting from 20+ yards is a start, even though he is motionless at the best of times)

In my opinion 99% of what is written here is conjecture and nothing more. Yet somehow I’m slated for that. There is a lot of bull written about how much money Ash pockets and how he flouts the tax laws with impunity. I know – I run a (small) business myself and know what needs to be done in company accounting and returns. • 61 expatmag // Feb 5, 2014 at 11:17 PM

I look upon our current situation with Ashley as follows:

He made it quite obvious he bought NUFC as a plaything and due to the lack of due diligence, he was landed with a lot of hidden debts he didn’t expect and therefore couldn’t enjoy his toy or even sell on at a quick profit.

Subsequently, his investment allied with the reduced income and additional costs attributed to the relegation year has hit him hard in then pocket.

Out of the 140 million pound interest free debt he has taken on, he has recovered 11 million and would have taken a further 18 million if it were not for the fact he had to shell out a similar figure to avoid relegation last year.

He has the club on the market for sale at 300 million to cover his original purchase price plus the debt owing and a small profit.

Noone is going to pay that much as the club is probably valued at 160 million and if he sold for that, he would take a huge loss which isn’t in his character.

Therefore, any additional money from Sky, transfers etc will go against his loan allowing him to redfuce the purchase price nearer to the true valuation therefore affecting a better chance of a sale.

Carr no doubt has some of the attributes to take on the role but his interest level, especially at his age, may not allow him to consider it.

Was using chrome on my iphone but it kept crashing so started to use that puffin browser but it seems to load in a different format!

Maybe everyone is realising Swansea were made great by Martinez, not Rodgers, not Laudrup.

  • 69 Jail for Ashley // Feb 5, 2014 at 11:33 PM

Pretty much agree with all of that except the play thing bit, imo he had a plan from the start that would maximise SD coverage and make a few quid for himself via the club, what his minset was when he paid for Jonas and Collo, I don’t know but how can one explain any of his decisions, the re hiring of Kinnear really does prove that, all that has become obvious is that he has no intention of providing the club with success unless by default, as for selling up, we’ve got no chance until all that money is paid back, even in the highly unlikely event somebody offers 300M, I don’t think he’d take it as he’ll get that back over the next six/seven years with all the advertising thrown in, if he sells just to get his money back he then has to pay for all that worldwide advertising.

  • 70 expatmag // Feb 5, 2014 at 11:33 PM

If we were to get a DOF, there are possibly a few good candidates around, some who might surprise. Whether they would take on the role is another question though.

Glenn Hoddle, as previously mentioned, has many attributes.

Steve McLaren at Derby would be excellent as he has experience both home and abroad at the highest level.

Brian Robson is a Geordie through and through and has a wealth of experience too.

Surprise choice of someone like David Ginola who seems keen and still has an affinity.

Hell, even Shearer could do it if he was motivated enough to get off the BBC couch.

Never a dull moment on the blog is there?

  • 72 Belfast // Feb 5, 2014 at 11:34 PM

Maybe until the end of the season.

What he should really do, is convince Chris Mort to come back.

    Llambias was a complete tube.
That would be another disaster in the end, if he came back.

  • 73 Belfast // Feb 5, 2014 at 11:39 PM

Kinnear’s appointment seems to have blinded some people regarding Llambias.

  • 74 expatmag // Feb 5, 2014 at 11:39 PM

    Some good points there.

With regard to the money side of things. He could recover virtually everything by keeping the SKY increased revenue estimated 40m, the Cabaye money 20m, sell Tiote, Krul etc say another 40m and sell the club for a reasonable 200m. He would then come out with a small profit.

As for SD, he could then buy Rangers and use them as his advertising cash cow.

  • 75 Jail for Ashley // Feb 5, 2014 at 11:40 PM

Llambias was a knobba, don’t you think Chris Mort walked when he found out about the eight year reich plan.

  • 76 expatmag // Feb 5, 2014 at 11:41 PM

A football man is required as DOF. If we were to get a DOF, I doubt dirty Derek would be considered.

  • 77 expatmag // Feb 5, 2014 at 11:42 PM

    How are you mate?

    Are you sober?…..LOL

  • 78 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 5, 2014 at 11:43 PM

How goes the SD detectives? Working on your first big case?
    “Who is bills son!”

  • 79 lesh // Feb 5, 2014 at 11:44 PM

What a shame Kinnear’s gone – just when we could have done with him.

That kid Tavernier looks a decent prospect and Joe would’ve signed him by now!

  • 80 BandB // Feb 5, 2014 at 11:45 PM

    Small World,

As an opening gambit, stating that one thing is true, and the rest is bull, was a bit high-risk.
As was telling someone to shut up within a few posts.
Comparative newcomers don’t tend to be so immediately assertive, and in the current climate, when nearly every self-proclaimed newbie is stridently pro-Ashley, it makes people wonder.
I was heavily frisked when I started. I don’t regret it.

  • 81 Belfast // Feb 5, 2014 at 11:49 PM

Llambias was a complete turkey Jail.
Just as bad as Kinnear imo.

Could you imagine the reaction in the media if Kinnear had of came out with the purple chip garbage lol

Mort seemed to be a good bloke, unlike his other mates.

  • 82 expatmag // Feb 5, 2014 at 11:51 PM

One thing is certain. We should have a greater insight into Ashley’s intentions for the club by 31st August because I see it, there will need to be a major overhaul of the squad conducted in the summer and if he isn’t prepared to fund it, then two things are inevitable.

1.. We will be relegation candidates next season.

    2. He will be openly looking for buyers.

I hope this sit in against Spurs gathers momentum !

  • 84 expatmag // Feb 5, 2014 at 11:55 PM

Yes, especially in our penalty area. Form a human wall will be the only way we get anything out of that game…

  • 85 Ibizatoon // Feb 5, 2014 at 11:56 PM

Sorry, little side tracked. Anyone have any experience dealing with online fraud?

Have some jokers who have copied details for one on my properties in Ibiza and advertising it on another site.

The host website appear unable to do anything.

Expat…Sober at the minute, but thinking a nice strong drink is in order soon! How’s things?

Tads…First case is definitely this internet one…cheeky b*st*rds!

I’ll stick with my words. I didn’t say what was written by Ancientcoptic was bull

“Of course, only the sale of Milner is true. The rest is conjecture. My personal take on it is that most of the things written here and other places about Ashley, Pardew et al are all bull. The problem lies in that with Ashley being adverse to making any comment, leads to people just fabricate stories. Eventually they become the truth” as they are repeated often enough and he will rarely if ever rebuff them.”

I can’t recall ever telling any-one here or indeed in real life ever to shut up. I would never be so rude. My comment on 25 was to correct my mistyped comment on 24. Suggesting that I should shut up.

Yes, I have read a lot of bull on here and other places for the last however many years

Now tell me how many times have I been abused in writing here on this thread.

    re: the online fraud bit.

Try contacting MR.TUFF. He is a retired fraud investigator and would have investigated matters online. I know him personally and he is a very able person.

Don’t tell the bugger I said that mind…

  • 89 Ibizatoon // Feb 6, 2014 at 12:00 AM

expat…Don’t worry, I’d never let Tuff know that anyone thought of him as able 🙂

    Thanks for the heads up.

  • 90 expatmag // Feb 6, 2014 at 12:01 AM

Very good at present. However, we are just about to have a few days of heatwave conditions here again and I was fortunate enough to install ducted air conditioning in the house this week thankfully.

What about you? How long before you head back to the Island?

  • 91 Ibizatoon // Feb 6, 2014 at 12:06 AM

expat…Mentioning A/C and hot conditions on this blog is my way to abuse the homeland posters…but I suppose I’m happy to share it as it will likely heap more misery upon them 🙂

I leave here on Monday. Still need to book a flight back to Ibiza, so not sure how long I’ll be in England…should probably figure that out before I have too many laughs a the cold ones expense.

  • 92 beddersmag // Feb 6, 2014 at 12:24 AM

£100M should be enough to bring in five or more top players – even if we only pay out only £40M of what’s available – and do it Mike Ashley’s thrifty way.

had to laugh at this Ed quote, as if he will spend just 40m. You have to love the deluded positivity
