Luuk de Jong makes his first start for Newcastle at Stamford Bridge this afternoon, as expected, and local lads Paul Dummett and Sammy Ameobi also get starts today.
Luuk de Jong – starts for Newcastle
And left back Davide Santon keeps his place in spite of a nightmare game against Sunderland last week, and young Sammy Ameobi is also in the starting line-up.
But it looks like Paul Dummett is at left back, and Davide Santon may be playing defensive midfield with Vurnon Anita, in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Luuk up front and Ben Arfa Moussa Sissoko and Sammy the midfield three.
Dan Gosling and 16 year-old local lad Adam Armstrong are both on the bench, and it seems that Davide Santon has been preferred to Gosling in central midfield.
For Chelsea, former Newcastle striker Demba Ba is on the bench with Samuel Eto’o up front.
Newcastle need to give a good account of themselves in this game, after last week’s disastrous home loss to Sunderland.
Teams:
Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Petr Cech; Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, David Luiz, Cesar Azpilicueta; Nemanja Matic, Frank Lampard (c); Willian, Oscar, Eden Hazard; Samuel Eto’o.
Substitutes: Mark Schwarzer, Ashley Cole, John Mikel Obi, Ramires, Andre Schurrle, Mohamed Salah, Demba Ba
Newcastle United (4-2-3-1): Tim Krul; Mathieu Debuchy, Mike Williamson, Steven Taylor, Paul Dummett; Vurnon Anita, Davide Santon; Hatem Ben Arfa, Moussa Sissoko (c), Sammy Ameobi; Luuk de Jong
Substitutes: Rob Elliot, Massadio Haidara, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Dan Gosling, Sylvain Marveaux, Shola Ameobi, Adam Armstrong
Referee: Howard Webb (Yorkshire)

Comment #4I cannot believe he hasnt found a place for Yanga Mbiwa. He is a better centre back than Saylor and a better defensive midfielder than Anita and Sissoko. Marveauux on the bench again where’s the creativity going to come from? Only Pardumb could produce a line up this dumb

Comment #5whats happening with Dummett and Santon then? are they just going to shift santon right wing or push him higher up on the left. Dont know how well that would work…

Comment #6How on earth is Taylor starting ahead of a full French International FFS ? .
And why put Santon in midfield with Marv on the bench ? .
I give up, I really do 🙁 .

Comment #10Looking forward to seeing how santon does in a more advanced role not to fussed about the result today as I don’t expect to come away with anything I just want to see the lads out a performance in after last weeks shambles

I’ll say this until he proves otherwise
Nothing at all that Marv has done suggests he should be starting

Comment #16Thank goodness there is no Shola Ameobi, I rarely complain about team selections… I see no reason for complaint here.
I am sure everybody has small tweaks they would make, but overall, not bad.
Anything better than a 2-0 defeat wouldn’t be a terrible result.

Comment #21Pardew really wants to get sacked. Santon is in an midfield role confirmed and most importantly Mbiwa dropped still. I hope just for the sake of it, we get thrashed and he gets sacked, I have had enough. Complains when we aint got enough “flair” players then benches them for twats and players that cannot play. One of the biggest twat going in our squad is Saylor.

Don’t think they are complaining about Santon mate, the fact Pardew complains of not having players to put in the starting line up then benches Marveaux and Mbiwa… It says it all really. Also, Haidara should be ahead of Dummet…

Comment #28Don’t know how this is going to work but I’m fearing the worse, I think it’s going to backfire on pardew. I would of played 4-4-1-1 same back 4,then
Sissoko–anita–mbiwa–marveaux
Ben Arfa
De Jong

Ffs it’s one “flair” player on the bench, more to the point a flair player who’s best performances have come from the bench
This is a very attacking line up given the players available
Fair play to him for at least setting us up to go for it
As for pardew getting sacked today how deluded can ya get!

ok, i think we can win 3-0, we can win 5-0
but that thinking is with the heart, not your head, in reality, im looking at that team and thinking it will be another loss, im thinking that chelsea will push high up the pitch, because lets face it, santon has been poor for a while now
taylor is rash and williamson is only good with a better player along side him
MYM hidarra and marv should be in for taylor santon and sammy

And how many Assists or goals has Santon got over the past two and a half years ? .
I somehow think Marv has more despite playing a fraction of the games .
That is why Marv should be starting .

Comment #36The official twitter seems to have Santon as a holding midfielder…. If that is the case that is very odd. If he is on the wing, then I don’t see it as too bad a line up. Would have preferred Mbiwa to Taylor and Haidara to Dummet though.
