Thanks For The Memories – This Player Gone In The Summer

7:16 pm, Monday, February 17th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 218 Comments

Alan Pardew has never managed to get the best out of Hatem Ben Arfa, even though the manager and the fans know that this player is simply blessed with sublime football skills, and he’s already scored maybe three of the best individual goals scored by a Newcastle player – ever.

hatem ben arfa flying

Ben Arfa – will still leave some great memories for Geordie fans

Ben Arfa is not good at defending, which is what the manager demands of every player in the Newcastle side, and while the 26 year-old Frenchman has improved greatly in his work-rate over the last couple of seasons, he still doesn’t seem to be cutting it, in Alan Pardew’s eyes.

And with Yohan Cabaye leaving last month, it seemed that Ben Arfa could play that withdrawn striker role, the number 10 position for Newcastle, and it seemed like a great chance for the French International, who was desperate to come to Newcastle when he signed back in August of 2010 – initially on loan.

But Alan Pardew chewed out Ben Arfa in the dressing room last Wednesday night,  for his lack of effort in the second half of the game against Tottenham, and with Newcastle again struggling,  it’s always difficult to field a player like Ben Arfa – who is sublime but does lose possession quite a few times in any game.

So it looks with just one year left on his contract, Ben Arfa will be sold in the summer, and some top clubs will be in for him, because top teams  can better accommodate a player with Ben Arfa’s class even if he is a little frail defensively – because he’a match winner – plain and simple.

Inter-Milan are said to be only too willing to take the lad in the summer – and it would appear he will be joining a club with Champions League football next season – so even though he hasn’t been an out-and-out success at  Newcastle, he’s still likely to join a bigger club when he leaves the Magpies.

In the twelve games remaining this season, Newcastle fans should probably savor this player – he’s brilliant and sublime – but he will be sold in the summer, so that he doesn’t become a free agent a year come June, when Newcastle will get nothing for him.

Remember these days that football is all about money – especially at Newcastle – that’s sad but true.

Finally, Ben Arfa actually has a good record at Newcastle, and in 81 appearances he’s scored 14 goals – some of them just out of this world – and he also has 19 assists.

That’s not too bad at all.

What do you think?

Sheepsheed probably doesn’t know who he is.

  • 2 Markaccus // Feb 17, 2014 at 7:20 PM

    Tds

No. I am not saying that. Poorer clubs at least look like they are trying to actually win stuff. We dont, and neither do arsenal. This is just my opinion.

  • 3 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Feb 17, 2014 at 7:20 PM

I would definitely keep Pardew over any of our players!

…players can be replaced – Pardew cannot ;)

  • 4 ToonDarnSarf // Feb 17, 2014 at 7:21 PM

I don’t agree that it’s Ben Arfa’s inability to track back and defend that’s an issue, it’s his decision making process. Give it to him on the halfway line in a counter-attack and he’s not going to hold onto the ball and play a clever pass, he’s more likely to try to beat 3 players and lose the ball. So his teammates can’t trust him. Burst into the box and he’s going to go for goal rather than trying to square it for a teammate.

Poorer clubs that us are still putting our weakened squads in the cups because they need to stay in the PL.

When we lost to Cardiff, we played Elliot, Santon, Haidara, Saylor, MYM, Tiote, Sissoko, Anita, HBA, Goofy and Cisse. Hardly a weak team and should easily have been enough to beat the Cardiff side

  • 8 mag // Feb 17, 2014 at 7:24 PM

Coming from a sheepsheed that’s canny.

  • 9 paul7388 // Feb 17, 2014 at 7:26 PM

Ed, are we going to be able to field a team next season? Judging by your articles over the last few weeks the whole squad seem to be leaving!

  • 10 mag // Feb 17, 2014 at 7:26 PM

If fatty had sold up to Mansour we would be interested top four instead of listening to Pardew.

  • 11 ToonDarnSarf // Feb 17, 2014 at 7:27 PM

    theartfuldodger

We’re not as rich or established as Arsenal though. They have worked hard for years to be where they are.

  • 12 catchy in norway // Feb 17, 2014 at 7:28 PM

    Ed

he is not a defender , he is an attacker , he defends from the front, he offers us more in defence from the from than any one of our defenders we have, he also contributes with goals and assists

so what he is not hazard or ozil, but then again he did not cost crazy money either

Ronaldo cost 80+ million and he don’t track back he is greedy , he would be no good in our team

    we do have some idiots,

pardew has not only pardewed the players but he has pardewed some I the fans, finances and defending , yeh the future of football

  • 13 mag // Feb 17, 2014 at 7:29 PM

Ask the bufoon called tds about team affairs as he can print paragraphs of guff that Sheepsheed laps up.

  • 14 Markaccus // Feb 17, 2014 at 7:29 PM

….yet poorer clubs still win cups, some at the expense of relegation. All i am saying is that we do not look ambitious under ashley. We havent for a long time.

  • 15 Jackel001 // Feb 17, 2014 at 7:29 PM

Expecting a lot of outgoings in the summer, just hope we get a few in too!

  • 16 ToonDarnSarf // Feb 17, 2014 at 7:30 PM

Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal and Spurs have had solid success over the last 10 years in terms of league finishes. So have Chelsea and with the money that they and City have invested, it’s incredible that they’re allowed in the same league!

Everton have had slow and steady progression but look at their seasons. How excited would many of you have been to be Everton fans over the last 10 years? Yes, their chairman has more charisma in his little finger than Ashley does, but it’s only very recently that they’ve had exciting players in their team.

  • 17 mindshaft // Feb 17, 2014 at 7:32 PM

Sadly HBA flatters to deceive – shame, as he has all the skill but still hasn’t learnt decision making which is why he’ll never be great – bit like Robert back in the day although I think Robert had a better goalscoring/assist record

  • 18 DokToon // Feb 17, 2014 at 7:35 PM

what the hell is ambition?? ive never heard of it…

  • 19 mag // Feb 17, 2014 at 7:35 PM

If fat mike spent the cash and peddled pardew we’d be in the top five.

  • 20 ToonDarnSarf // Feb 17, 2014 at 7:35 PM

Cups aren’t about the best team, they’re a lot about luck. In terms of percentages, how many trophies are won by teams outside the big 4 at the time? And we’re one of many clubs who should be in with a shout then.

I wish we could just win a trophy…then it might make people more patient…

There have been a lot of complaints about Manly Men Inc.’s latest product the Extend a Nos, for manly flared nostrils all the time. Let’s review their use: 1. insert 2. activate while moving hands quickly away 3. prepare for fully extended nostrils. Beautiful. Now I also have to remind everyone that no returns are accepted and no refunds made if you have used this product in the wrong orifices. Please lads, I mean really! :(

Shocking the state some of these returned products are in! Harrumph!

He can be unplayable or disastrous. He’ll never shake off that tag, he’s just one of those players.
    Shame really.

Just read the remy article .

I don’t think he’s good enough for arsenal, I think they’re after bigger fish

He’s not going to get in liverpools side ahead of Sturridge or Suarez.

I seriously doubt psg are interested as money wise they are the man city of Europe.

I don’t think he’ll have a load of bigger clubs after him. Not saying he’ll sign for us, just don’t think there’ll be this big list that he thinks.

  • 41 Tsunki // Feb 17, 2014 at 7:59 PM

Decision making? Who’s to pass to? I’ve lost count of the balls he has pulled back from the byline to nobody in the box. He can only pass to players who are actually making themselves available. Many players have had patchy starts to their careers and eventually figured things out, but sadly Hatem us wasting his optimum years here. Asking him to defend is defeating his purpose, like insisting Krul scores goals.

  • 42 catchy in norway // Feb 17, 2014 at 8:00 PM

    hayley

    your a numpty

it says 14 goals and 19 assists in 81 appearances , in reality you could take his appearances right down, a lot of his sub appearances have been for less than 10 minutes and because he dont score or assist in those 10 mins he is blasted for being greedy,

i think when he plays, he does more good than bad, he has a goal or assist every 2.45 appearances on the stats , which is not bad at all, and if you take away all those 5 -10 minutes he gets, those stats are very good, better than anyone else in the team,
his problems at other clubs was not about what he could couldnt do, it was his attitude, and to me, his time at newcastle . his attitude has been first class,
    cabaye
    Ba
    jonas
colo all senior players have complaind to pardew, not /hba

  • 74 GeordieTwo // Feb 17, 2014 at 8:21 PM

Well I think it’s time to comment on our upcoming game vs the Villains. I’m looking forward to a very clever tactical plan from Pardew. Looking forward to it but not expecting it. I expect very little change. Santon will start and take corners and be caught out of position over and over again and walk around shaking his head. Willo will remain our high scoring target man on corners and free kicks. Saylor will strut about, make some lung busting runs and then get caught out of position at a key moment. Benny will try to beat 7 players, lose the ball and saunter around looking surprised.

  • 75 GeordieTwo // Feb 17, 2014 at 8:22 PM

  • 82 Barton // Feb 17, 2014 at 8:26 PM

Well i’m worried about this so called summer clearout, why ? because we wont signe the players to replace who go’s out,as the last 2 windows and previous 7 years have shown us,and as for Benny, only person to blame, the manager,he has been well and truelly Pardewed(am hoping the oxford dictionary adds that word this year, they bloody should),most managers would encourage and build a team round him,but not our defence is the only answer manager, rist this is the man who did’nt rate tevez and Mascherano dont forget that, and thinks shola is a class act,to be honest lads its getting to much at the minute,Cashley has finaly beat me in to submission.

It fcuks me off on here coz people see things differently they called a mackem, a troll, a bum boy, a. WUM etc . Who the hell holds the blueprint for a true fan and who the hell on here thinks they’re on such a high pedestal that their views are so much better than anyone.

I’ve had constructive chats with people who disagree, start with the stupid golden boy name changes to be clever, but then have am insightful chat in the end. So the pettiness is pointless, just engage in a convo respect the points and enjoy a blog that Ed works do hard on to keep going.

The cub is rotten and we are in freefall. If we don’t replace the manager by the summer, get on us being relegated next year as we wont get 20 points.

The corner and set piece work at the club is shockingly poor. We still push Willo up into the box. He may as well be a cardboard cutout for all the good it does. Does Pardew watch the game or review it afterward? What does he look at? It can’t be our players. Maybe there’s a lass he’s after in the crowd? What does he think of Santon’s play?

Ben Arfa has contributed little of late but then he doesn’t fit the compact counter-attack Pardew system. Sadly, given the backing of a supportive manager, he will probably blossom in an attacking, explosive side such as liverpool or arsenal.

I would be more annoyed by him leaving than Cabaye – as it’s not like he’s angling for a bigger club, but more that, given our history, NUFC has given up on trying to accommodate a match-winning- if inconsistent – creative genius playmaker into a winning team. Sad day.

  • 135 GeordieTwo // Feb 17, 2014 at 9:05 PM

Aye gb83 yet nothing much changes. A few short corners leading to nothing. If I was Pardew I would forget about pushing Willo up the field. He has no feel for attacking football at all. I’ve been impressed by his defensive play this season. I’ve dissed him in the past but without him we’d be in a much worse position now. He uses his limited skill to the max. Great work rate as with Gouffran. Benny take note.

  • 136 toon22 // Feb 17, 2014 at 9:06 PM

Unsung hero mate. For every MYM you need a willo. With the corners do u remember collo’s header against Cardiff I’m the championship, he attacked it like his life depended on it. Not surprised Benny will be gone in summer . Pardew is shite. Clueless on how to manage a gifted player . What pardew needs in his team is 11 stoppers , that way we might not concede many but on the other hand we woundnt score any . Benny will go to a team with a manager who has a bit of class , something our useless excuse for a manager can only dream of . Sad , very sad indeed that a truly gifted player is being made a scapegoat for 1 mans lack of managerial know how.

  • 170 GeordieTwo // Feb 17, 2014 at 9:38 PM

Another cunning plan which will continue from Pardew: push Santon far up the field to lose the ball in the corner but don’t have anyone covering for him. This fools the other side into believing they can run freely down our left wing and make numerous open crosses and other balls into the box. Those fools! Don’t they realize how clever we are? Well not everyone can have a genius like Pards managing their club.

  • 173 GeordieTwo // Feb 17, 2014 at 9:46 PM

By letting clubs raid freely down our left side we give them a 2 or 3 goal lead which will clearly make them overconfident. Then we cleverly go defensive and hold out for a 0-3 loss. Beautiful. Pardew, what a master mind.

Hatems problem with newcastle was pardew. Ive said from the start he should b playing behind a striker in the hole nd allow him to run at defenders nd not track back as much. But pardew being an idiot plays him upfront of a false 9 because he scored 2 goals against villa nd fulham. Or play him on the wing with debuchy who is an attacking right back. Any good counter attacking team .i.e.villa or a hull. If i remember hull did. Robbie brady scored due to lack of cover from right side i recall. Just like many players at this club they have been pardewed.

Ben Arfa is a lovelyt little player, but he wont be a huge loss. He cant be trusted as a 10 because he doesnt work hard off the ball, and his decision making is awful because he plays with his head down. Again, I’ve told ye this before. “Ben Arfa is not good at defending, which is what the manager demands of every player in the Newcastle side, and while the 26 year-old Frenchman has improved greatly in his work-rate over the last couple of seasons, he still doesn’t seem to be cutting it, in Alan Pardew’s eyes.”

Sorry mate but this is complete bollox
Show me one quote where pardew has said he doesn’t defend enough so he doesn’t play

The lad doesn’t play because he’s unbelievably inconsistent, runs looking at his feet, has awful decision making and is generally lazy on the pitch

He has neither the vision of physical strength to play the number 10 role and offers zero in terms of service from the wing
It has sweet FA to do with tracking back

As for all this “under another manager he’d blossom” what is that based on?
He played under some very good very well respected managers at Lyon and Marsielle and none of them could get close to making the lad a player so how the hell is it Pardew’s fault?

Maybe a chewing off is what Hatem needs. He’s had the arm across the shoulder. Maybe a boot up the backside will produce the result we need. He has been played on the wing, in the hole, up front, a free role, he has taken frees and corners. All to little effect. He could have gone to Brazil had he continued this season as he began it. I love to watch him but most of the blame falls on his own head.

Ben Arfa is like most of our squad – unable to produce a quality performance week in and week out. Of course that has a lot to do with the manager and his selections and tactics. Someone more skilled and imaginative in the role could well be able to get better results out of this group, but it ain’t gonna be Pardew. His notion of football is mired in the English game of the ‘nineties. Totally unsuited to the type of player the club has been signing, but that in itself is symptomatic of the ineptitude of the owner (and those who do his bidding) in all matters football.

Subderland have starting accommodating Johnson and look how that is paying off. If they can do if we should be able to. Pardew needs more flexibility in his tactics.

If Inter do want him we should see if we can get a player or two in the deal. They often do player exchange with clubs.
