Newcastle were said to be interested in Siem de Jong, the captain of Ajax, and he is the older brother of Luuk de Jong, who is currently on loan at Newcastle from Borussia Monchengladbach, and Siem turned 25 late last month.
Siem de Jong – signing for Newcastle in the summer?
And of course Siem has played for Holland six times with two goals, and Luuk has 7 International caps with one goal.
Siem is also a perfect player to take over the withdrawn striker role that Yohan Cabaye filled so brilliantly before he left Newcastle last month, and in his final seven games for Newcastle Yohan scored five goals, and there’s no doubt Newcastle are now missing their play-maker, since he left the club.
Last month Siem told the Dutch press he was going to be leaving Ajax in the summer:
“I plan to leave Ajax – that is my intention. I am ready for a new challenge.”
Siem has been at Ajax since 2005, and he has only seventeen months left on his contract, and apparently Ajax want around £8M for him, and it could be even less than that, and that’s a decent fee for a very good player.
He made his first team debut for Ajax in September of 2007 against Kozakken Boys as an 18 year-old, and since then he has played 233 times for the Dutch giants with 75 goals.
And he has been captain of Ajax since Jan Vertonghen left for Tottenham in the summer of 2012, so Siem also has leadership capabilities which Newcastle need, especially since current captain Fab Coloccini could be leaving the club in the summer.
If Luuk does well at Newcastle through the end of the season, the Tyneside club may try to bring both brothers to the club in the summer, and we think that would be great for Newcastle.
