Wrestling Entrepreneur Considers Buying Newcastle

12:06 am, Tuesday, February 18th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 60 Comments

Twitter is swirling at the moment with rumors that WWE ( World Wrestling Entertainment) Chairman Vince McMahon is considering buying Newcastle United from the current rather unpopular owner Mike Ashley.

vince mcmahon

Vince McMahon - considering a bid for Newcastle?

Apparently Vince, who was born in Pinehurst, North Carolina (just south of us here in Raleigh)  68 years ago,  apparently first  considered buying Newcastle back in 2011.

With Newcastle fans wanting Mike Ashley out of the club, it’s not too surprising that rumors are beginning to surface that somebody may be looking to buy the famous Tyneside club.

Whether the rumors  are true or not is another matter.

The rumors are that McMahon is looking to buy a Premier League club, and use it as a possible springboard to increase WWE presence in England, and St. James’ Park could even be used as a venue for wrestling events.

Oh my.

It’s only a rumor, but it’s  an indication of just how fed up Newcastle fans are at the moment,  that the mere possibility of McMahon making a bid for the Toon has gone viral on Twitter.

However it would only work if any new owner was willing to put some substantial money into the club, and have a vision and strategy of making Newcastle a top four team in England again – and as soon as possible.

That would do it.

What do you think?

I live in North Carolina as well, maybe I need to make a trip to Pinehurst and talk to Mr. McMahon! Pinehurst 2 is one of the prettiest golf courses in the US!

  • 10 Dixie // Feb 18, 2014 at 12:48 AM

It’s complete and utter rubbish, a story worthy of April Fools Day. Vince McMahon has zero interest in European sports of any kind. He was involved in a deeply expensive and ill-fated XFL (American Football) league that flopped a decade ago and cost him 100s of millions of dollars. He’s just spent a fortune launching the WWE Network, which starts next week. He’s not buying any football club, certainly not Newcastle.

  • 11 toon1707 // Feb 18, 2014 at 12:49 AM

I don’t think it will happen but it would be massive if if did also massively lift our standing in America

  • 12 Blofal // Feb 18, 2014 at 1:04 AM

If his primary concern is buying the club to promote WWE then he can get f$ucked.

We need an owner with an ego who wants to win. We already have an owner who bought our club to promote his own business… we don’t need another.

Sorry but I need to be con-Vinced that he will put the club first.

  • 13 Blofal // Feb 18, 2014 at 1:09 AM

Oh and all you idiots out there who have gone

“oh I like football and I also love wrestling. .. this would be great!”

    ….are idiots.

  • 14 JackButler // Feb 18, 2014 at 1:10 AM

And it’s not even April fools day.

Under Ashley WWE is ‘will withdraw equity’

  • 15 Dixie // Feb 18, 2014 at 1:19 AM

There’s not a chance in hell of it even happening. The fact that people are even discussing this is a joke. I realise you’re all desperate to get rid of Ashley, but Vince McMahon is not an option at all. There’s more chance of Steve McMahon buying the club than Vince McMahon. By the way, Vince McMahon is not very respected within mainstream America. When his wife Linda tried (and failed) to run for political office twice (costing the McMahons over $150m by the way), both times her husband Vince’s business activities were used against her to discredit her, by her political opponents. Trust me, I’m a big wrestling fan and I know a huge amount about the McMahons and there is no chance in hell of this happening.

If we have to have a character from a us soap could we not have Walldorf and Statler from the muppets instead?

At least they complain about the c**p we watch too!

  • 17 kt97toonarmy // Feb 18, 2014 at 1:30 AM

Evan if vince buys newcastle. Would he invest? cud b the same as liverpools owners a couple of years ago b4 they were bought! I honestly think the “make wwe popular in england is lies cas its already popular in england. But this rumour is spreading quickly like. It will prove true or false next couple of days. Thats for sure.

  • 18 ian7523 // Feb 18, 2014 at 1:52 AM

Sorry, this is off-topic, but does anyone know what has happened to Bigirimana? Is he injured?

  • 19 Laurent Robert 32 // Feb 18, 2014 at 2:09 AM

At least he’d want entertainment, so Hatem would hopefully stay. It’s a crime to football that he’s made a scapegoat.

I don’t think Vince is wealthy enough though, although if he shrewdly builds it as with careful investment, it could be ok.

Pardew would hopefully be gone straight away with his dull, chancer football.

Probably all rumour-mill gone wild though.

  • 20 theartfuldodger // Feb 18, 2014 at 2:15 AM

Now I seriously feel Iv seen it all. WWE lineups !?!

Yr talking about a guy who has done literally everything on television for TRP.
    Peeing in his pants,kissing ass,dropping pants,getting slapped…

I can imagine him at the ground aftr a game with a mic telling Pardew “Yourrr Fired !!”

Main Event at WrestleMania 25 man Over the top Rope Newcastle United Squad Battle Royal. Talk about injuries !

  • 21 Laurent Robert 32 // Feb 18, 2014 at 2:18 AM

Something doesn’t seem right at the moment with the loan signings being the only transfer and Kinnear being brought in just to oversee those trading windows . Yet now he’s no longer employed.

Looks like it could be preparing for a sale. (Not another 70% off one though ;-)

He can take his slimey puppet with him once he does leave.

  • 22 Ginger // Feb 18, 2014 at 2:20 AM

I read somewhere that he is injured, whether it is true or not is a different question though. It does make sense.

  • 23 Laurent Robert 32 // Feb 18, 2014 at 2:25 AM

P.S…. I went to Summer Slam ’92 at Wembley. It was excellent(!)

Bret Hart vs British Bulldog for the main event. They were the classic days. Haven’t followed it in 2 decades, but if he is looking to provide entertainment then it’s a lot more that fatty and slimey provide, so why not.

Again, just more rumour-mill most likely.

  • 24 Laurent Robert 32 // Feb 18, 2014 at 2:39 AM

Funny stuff. A standard outcome for an entertainment based team.

  • 25 beermonkey // Feb 18, 2014 at 2:49 AM

this is a joke aint it

  • 26 sevenho // Feb 18, 2014 at 3:39 AM

imagine putting all the wwe stars behind our keeper goal post during penalty shoot out. even gerrald will balloon the shot

  • 27 Jail for Ashley // Feb 18, 2014 at 4:19 AM

Considering what Ashley invests in the club would it really matter if he was the worlds 382nd richest man or not, he totally sh1ts on an all time Nufc legend after he pulls him out of the sh1te and then spits the dummy because we turn on him. and uses that as an excuse for bleeding us. Please anybody but Mike Ashley, Tan or the Venkys.

  • 28 scout // Feb 18, 2014 at 5:57 AM

Steven Taylor might actually switch to something he’s good at

  • 29 Lilongwe Geordie // Feb 18, 2014 at 6:10 AM

Surely this is just a repeat of a rumour that has been around for nearly 2 years now!! Utter nonsense

  • 30 Toon-Prodigy // Feb 18, 2014 at 6:34 AM

Oh god, where do these stories come from?

  • 31 Santon03 // Feb 18, 2014 at 6:38 AM

lately only silly stories about NUFC, too many BS.
seems like the media are involved in every meeting with MA.

  • 32 Lilongwe Geordie // Feb 18, 2014 at 6:43 AM

This rumour first appeared as a bit of fun after Steve Harper’s elbow drop against Arsenal?? To think it is still being regurgitated (and given credence to) is a bit embarrassing really.

  • 33 dubzy // Feb 18, 2014 at 6:44 AM

I hope to god this is not true……net worth $1.1billion its Oil money we need or a Russian oligarch :)

  • 34 catchy in norway // Feb 18, 2014 at 7:14 AM

    yeh yeh

don’t see it myself , if he wanted to promote wwe he would be after a London club

  • 35 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 18, 2014 at 7:27 AM

This has to be a massive joke right?
Jesus as if people aren’t laughing at us enough!

Can you imagine the new club name? Or the players coming on to the pitch through pyrotechnics!

Didn’t Vince Macmahon try and fail miserably to set up his own American football league ?

  • 36 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 18, 2014 at 7:28 AM

Don’t know mate, there live tours normally sell a lot more in the north of the country than London

  • 37 Sliema // Feb 18, 2014 at 7:40 AM

Taylor would be awwwwwesome at Wrestling!
Can’t believe I’ve never had that thought before. At least that’s mean he will finally f uck off from our XI.

  • 38 valle // Feb 18, 2014 at 7:56 AM

We’re almost all of us desperate for a new owner at this time, so desperate that we might not realize that the new guy comming in wont be mutch better. This dosnt seem like the owner to save us in my opinion. It rather sounds like the circus we have turned into are expanding. So I hope this isnt true, but I do hope someone else will come along, with ambition for NUFC.

  • 39 Transfer Sage // Feb 18, 2014 at 7:59 AM

would love this to happen, not that rich with a net worth of only 1.1mil dollars but would be entertaining at least.

he’s all about sports entertainment, not this boring defensive football…perfect ey catchy?

and yeh usually tours sell out more in newcastle, manchester areas than down south

  • 40 Thump // Feb 18, 2014 at 8:01 AM

This isn’t going to happen. Even then, Mike Ashley can only dream of being half the cnut that Vince McMahon is.

  • 41 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 18, 2014 at 8:08 AM

Maybe that’s what bought us to his attention, Taylor’s ability to clothesline the opposition!

  • 42 Transfer Sage // Feb 18, 2014 at 8:10 AM

certainly explains why mbiwa was wresting the other week

  • 43 Lilongwe Geordie // Feb 18, 2014 at 8:12 AM

    From 2011…

  • 44 Transfer Sage // Feb 18, 2014 at 8:13 AM

yeh i saw that last night when looking up the story…seems a bit long to just be a rehash of the rumours though. Maybe something in it.

  • 45 Thump // Feb 18, 2014 at 8:15 AM

@TS: As far as I know, McMahon was the last person to be linked with us. Giving the recent rumours that Ashley is looking for a suitor it probably makes sense to fall back on the latest one.

  • 46 Lilongwe Geordie // Feb 18, 2014 at 8:16 AM

I doubt it, this all stemmed from twitter, I can’t remember who retweeted it, but there was a similar twitter story about this last year as well, just didn’t take off as much as people weren’t as despondent…..

  • 47 Transfer Sage // Feb 18, 2014 at 8:17 AM

In all seriousness no idea if he would be a good or not for the club, sure he would be able to attract more investment and sponsorship which would be good for us, and possibly open us more to the american market, maybe not though, hard to know for sure.

  • 48 Transfer Sage // Feb 18, 2014 at 8:18 AM

possibly, thought the latest was redbull…but either way, both more of the recent links.

True, I can’t see it myself, but would certainly be interesting.

  • 49 Transfer Sage // Feb 18, 2014 at 8:20 AM

Also fulham have sacked mullentstein and wilkins.

Would love ray wilkins as assistant manager, very clever man when you hear him talk. If mullenstein wanted to coach i’d have him in as well.

  • 50 Lilongwe Geordie // Feb 18, 2014 at 8:23 AM

Red Bull’s football director said in August they were looking into buying a Prem club to take the brand into the Champions league, but very little happened from then on. No actual real links to Newcastle that was just people adding 2 and 2.

Would be interesting how people would react to Red Bull buying us as it would lead to a name change to Red Bull ……… They have a number of footy teams, all with the name starting Red Bull. Great potential for a network of developing talent though as they have an Austrian, German, Ghanaian and a Brazilian club.

  • 51 hitman // Feb 18, 2014 at 8:32 AM

if you think ashley is ruthless.he has nothing on vince.out of the frying pan into the fire

  • 52 Jail for Ashley // Feb 18, 2014 at 8:39 AM

Newcastle Red Bulls, five PL titles two FA cups and a CL plus a swanky Red Bull away kit, mmmmmm not to sure.

  • 53 Norwegian_geordie // Feb 18, 2014 at 8:47 AM

    Makes sense…

Bring back Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer – There’s your halftime entertainment…

  • 54 petey // Feb 18, 2014 at 8:59 AM

This is to funny! This is the kind of news I expect to come out about Newcastle these days… it really isn’t good LOL

imagine! The rock can be our “director of football” …he would be so much better than Joe kinnear! Who would say no to the rock?????

Tiote and Taylor would be an awesome tag team! Team Tiotaylor. Bring steel chairs and ladders to games!

  • 55 petey // Feb 18, 2014 at 9:05 AM

Apparently he played a game yesterday behind closed doors against a mixed Newcastle team… that is until tiote walked on the pitch… then this happened:

  • 56 petey // Feb 18, 2014 at 9:08 AM

And sorry to triple part.. But as everyone else has been posting there “in all seriousness” opinions… I have no idea about this guy…. how rich he is or if he is a big spender…but what I do know is Americans tend to bring big sponsorship with them…. You never know, we might look good in warrior kits plastered with Walmart logos

For sure, why bringing such a nonsence on this blog.
    Is like Sun or Bildzeitung.
    Absolute shit.

  • 60 toonluvva // Feb 18, 2014 at 2:42 PM

    Whoa, hang on there!

A$h£€¥ bought NUFC simply to promote SportsDirect.

Now we are supposed to get excited about an American wanting to buy us to promote his WWE interests.

Sorry, but I am a little concerned about this.
