Under Mike Ashley, Newcastle have done what Arsenal have consistently done in building several great sides over the years with Arsene Wenger, and that is they have recruited from France, where the value for money of players is good, and both wages and transfer fees are less than if the Magpies recruited in Britain, where English players often come at a significant premium.
Alan Pardew – wants more British based players
But Alan Pardew has said for some time now, that he wants more British based players in the squad, and maybe he will get his way in the summer, and it’s likely that several Frenchmen could be leaving the club.
Frenchmen who could leave in the summer include Loic Remy, Gabby Obertan, Sylvain Marveaux and Romain Amalfitano, who just hasn’t made any impact at Newcastle and is on loan for the season at Dijon, while his older brother Morgan has gone in the other direction, and is on loan from Marseilles to West Brom.
And Newcastle could even unload Ben Arfa, who has not had a good season on Tyneside – so it’s possible Newcastle could unload five Frenchmen in the summer, but then we would have to replace them.
Pardew has spoken of wanting more British players in his squad:
“A lot of the French players we’ve introduced because of market forces,” “Arsene Wenger’s first port of call when he arrived here was the same reason, he thought he got better value.” “I’m very disappointed not to have more British-based players in my team.”
“I want more British-based players but I’m certainly not going to argue with the French contingent we’ve got.” “They’ve been absolutely brilliant. This is a world market.”
“We have made our point within the club, that we don’t really want to buy any players from abroad.”
Graham Carr is Newcastle’s Chief Scout, and he has been regularly scouting in France for most of the season, so it remains to be seen if Newcastle can bring in some British based players over the summer.
But in the past the club has balked on the high transfer fees and wages required by those players, and let’s be honest – Mike Ashley has never been known to be loose with Newcastle’s money, since he bought the club in June, 2007.
What do you think?

This idiot could write of a book of endlessly stupid comments. What the hell kind of message does that send to Carr?

Comment #45I don’t believe that Pardew gets a cut from the sale any sale of a Newcastle player period, if that is what is being suggested.

Comment #50so far we have received 57-59 million from AC, Ba & Cabaye, we bought in so far our French lads for about 17-18 million and we bought in LDJ £0 and Remy 2 million on loan.
by right we should have around 38-40 million to spend, so where is it?

Comment #53Lol daft tw@ts for supporting through thick and thin. It ain’t brilliant but we are 9th get up to 8th today with a win. It’s not that bad for fcuk sake. I always said relegation was awesome for us as it would stop our fantasist fans from believing we are bigger than we are. The reality is we are 6th 7th biggest team in premiership, and that is mainly due to fan base not success.
What I hate is if we win 7-0 today and okay footy similar to that of the robson era, it will still not be good enough.
Lose all our games, maybe get relegated, sack Pardew, bring in who exactly in the championship? Clubs value drops, Ashley cashes in on squad , tightens purse strings even more, youngsters aren’t good enough to step up. Ashley still gets free advertising, increased tv and media coverage as biggest club in championship, and Ashley sticking to his guns and asking same price for a club he will never achieve in that league. What great scenario that is.

Comment #54The worst thing about it is every single game from now until the end of the season is meaningless. We wont go down, we won’t get into Europe.
Inertia.
There are no ‘big games’. What the hell is there to get excited about? This is the first time in my 33 years supporting the club that I have felt this apathetic towards my team.
We cant even get excited about who we may buy I’m the summer.
There is only one person to blame for this. Ashley.
Let’s get this clown out!

Everything is a mess at the moment. We just need some wins. But with our lackluster style it might take some doing.

Comment #56I heard the match is almost sold out….. EH!? Surely can’t be true?
If so, then WHY………??? Obviously a lot of optimistic fans think we will beat a poor Villa side, and are happy to line Mike’s pockets with cash tickets, pies, pints, etc.
Hope we win, as any true fan would. So-called fans wanting us to lose just to oust the manager – that’s crap. Yes I am utterly pi$$ed-off with our greedy owner and clueless manager and I refuse to go to a match until Ashley goes….. but would I ever want my team to lose?!!?
I last went about 2 years ago and that was only because my dear wife decided she wanted to go to her 1st match….

Comment #58We don’t need “British spirit” to win good games, the likes of STaylor, Williamson, Shola, they all give up in games like the derby when we go behind.
It’s down to the manager to keep them in the game and get them motivated. There is no such thing as this British spirit everyone seems to talk about.
Take the Fullham game for example when Cisse scored in the last minute and ran into the crowd, no British spirit there. Even the Arsenal 4-4 was actually because of Pardew motivating them, they gave up before half time.
Just because a player is British doesn’t mean he won’t give up, baffles me when people say that. It’s down to the manager to motivate the players, which seems to be something that Pardew has lost.

Comment #60LoL, so Arsenal bought Oxlade Chamberlain for €13.8mill and Walcott for €10.5mill.
Are we going to compete with that?
Also we may need to remind Pardew that we had british talent in the last few years from prob one class lower than that which we sold like Milner, Routledge, Nolan and then there is Andy Carroll.

Comment #64We have players like Noble, Carlton Cole, Liam Ridgewell.
All pardew type players. he’ll manage them better than the current internationals. haha.
and we’ll be fighting relegation next season if we had to listen to pardew preference of players. the one who put others ahead of Tevez and Mascherano.

Comment #65Bit of a long post but still true…
CARLOS TEVEZ stuck the knife into sacked former West Ham boss Alan Pardew.
Breaking his silence for the first time, the Argentinian midfielder insisted:
He was STUNNED Pardew was not sacked earlier;
His own talents were WASTED by being played out of position;
Pardew STRUGGLED to manage big-name foreign stars;
Pardew was WRONG to ignore the talents of fellow Argentine Javier Mascherano.
New manager Alan Curbishley will be paraded at Upton Park before a crunch clash with Manchester United but Tevez, signed in a controversial deal at the start of the season, is the first player to speak out against Pardew.
React
Tevez, who could start today in his preferred role as a central striker, said: “I was surprised to see how long Pardew held on to the job in the end.
“In Argentina or Brazil he would have been out long ago. It was clear the team did not react as he wanted — it wasn’t going right.
“I was never given the chances I thought I would be given and I was told to play out of position against my will.
“I had to sacrifice myself for the team which I don’t think helped. I was playing in ways I did not understand well and I lost a lot from my own game.
“It didn’t fit where he put me, but I wanted to help.”
Angry
The stress was too much for Tevez when he was substituted in the 1-0 win over Sheffield United and he stormed out of the ground and was later forced to apologise. He said: “I was a bit angry because I was playing as the second striker and I normally play as a No8.
“I am here to help but playing outside of my role puts me under pressure. I didn’t think Teddy Sheringham would replace me but he did, but I know now that was wrong.”
Tevez, who scored 25 goals in 38 games for Brazilian side Corinthians, has yet to score in 13 appearances for West Ham, the worst spell of his career.
That has contributed to the Hammers’ dismal run of 11 defeats in 17 League games, a sickening cup defeat to minnows Chesterfield and a potentially disastrous relegation fight.
It led to Pardew’s dismissal on Monday and Curbishley’s immediate appointment. Tevez, 22, insisted he and Mascherano got on well with Pardew.
He said: “Pardew was always asking how we were and if we needed anything and for that I am grateful. But when the match came round, he would be more distant.
“I don’t think he had a clear idea about my game or what to do. He was good football man but more suited to coaching English teams without foreign players with big reputations.
“I think that was a bit of a problem for him.”
Tevez was mystified why Mascherano — linked with a move to Juventus — was not given a chance by Pardew.
He said: “It was strange not to have Javier playing. Especially as the team were struggling and losing. He is a very good player, doing well in training and he just wanted to play.”
Curbishley is an emotional favourite for many Hammers fans, having played for the club and supported them all his life.
Tevez is also a fan. He vowed: “Now is the time to turn around our season.
Repay
“We have a new president, a new coach and we can do a lot more for the team.
“The fans have been fantastic towards me and I thank them. Now I want to repay them.
“I want to win with this team and a lot of people have told me great things about the new coach, so I want to start scoring for him and start helping West Ham win matches.”

Comment #75That report about Pardew wanting more british players is from last season and came out after he and Carr were reported to be at odd’s with each other.
There is not way we will switch to signing British players as they are the most expensive players on the planet, we will continue to shop at the bargain basement for players, only signing cheap players with no time left on their contracts

Comment #78davetoon @65 – agree with all the details in your post, however I think it might coax out from their recent hiding places members of the pro Percy/pro Ashley Brigade (previously known as the Legion of Dishonour, the Jam Tomorrow Brigade and more recently known as the Flat Earth Society).
These folks have been conspicuous by their absence recently -but I suspect your post may bring them out of hiding -or a good result will definitely result in them appearing “en masse” crowing that all things are well at the club.
