Luuk De Jong Looking Better And Better – Pardew

9:05 pm, Thursday, February 27th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 57 Comments

Alan Pardew held his press conference today for the tough game at Hull City on Saturday, and near the end he was asked if Luuk de Jong’s performances would decide whether Newcastle would sign him permanently in the summer.

luuk de jong97

Luuk de Jong – looking better and better

It seemed a bit of a dumb question, but Alan answered it well, and revealed the Dutch striker is finding his feet in training on Tyneside, and looking better and better:

“I think that would make sense that he needs to make a success of his last ten games and he’s had a good start.”

“I think he came into the team when unfortunately we had just lost Cabaye, and we lost a couple of games and no Remy, and it was difficult for him.”

“But he’s finding his feet in training – and he’s looking better and better, and hopefully he can have a big impact before the end.”

And Luuk did well when he came on against Aston Villa and her brilliantly set up Loic Remy with a great piece of play and Loic hit the post, but it was a wide open goal and the French striker should have done better.

But then a few minutes later,  de Jong was again  involved, as his shot in the penalty area was deflected high in the air, to Remy who then gave an exhibition over a few seconds of how to beat two men in the penalty area,  before you smash the ball into the back of the net for the winning goal, with a minute to go in added time.

And of course Newcastle got a fantastic 3 points.

And Alan also said he would probably give young Adam Armstrong his first team debut before the end of the season, and that another Academy product, Sammy Ameobi, would have a big part to play through the end of the season.

luuk is awsome and i’m hoping he gets some decent efforts at goal soon seing as the poor lad had 2 assists poorly missed.

so theres 1 of our 2-3 signings 🙂

  • 2 mag // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:09 PM

Looking better than who Shola,Cisse or Sammy? Go and buy some Premier league quality you cockney bufoon, instead of taking the mickey with your patronising turd.

  • 3 mindshaft // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:12 PM

He’s looked average so far, needs to step up although he looked better in last 10 mins against villa than in previous 2 games so has a chance

  • 4 mindshaft // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:13 PM

Mag – always look forward to your insightful posts, I learn a lot from em

  • 5 mag // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:14 PM

  • 7 Big Pappa Cissé // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:18 PM

    Are Soldado & Cisse related ? .

  • 8 Big Pappa Cissé // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:22 PM

I still maintain the only two decent players Spurs got out of the £100 million they dropped were Erikksen & Paulinho .

  • 9 mindshaft // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:31 PM

Just shows that randomly spending a ton of cash buying 7 players to replace one doesn’t always work – Spurs are woeful
Saying tgat , it seems we’ll buy 1 to replace 3, not sure that’s gonna work either

  • 10 mag // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:34 PM

    Lucky cockneys.

  • 11 manxpie // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:34 PM

would’ve been interesting to see wat he could have done with dummets deliveries vs villa
    hopefully we will next game

jammy jammy spurs soldado should’ve been off in the 1st half!

  • 12 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:35 PM

I would still argue that Sherwood doesn’t fit the players AVB bought…

…the same Pardew doesn’t really fit the players Carr recommends and the club has bought! Maybe that is why they also look woeful just like us 😉

  • 13 toon kk // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:36 PM

Its all about making do with what we have and keeping the wage bill down.
Don’t expect too much activity in the next transfer window its MA we’re talking about.

  • 14 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:37 PM

….it’s a delicate system 🙂 it needs to be right or else you end up looking not the part! At least that is what I think!

  • 15 mag // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:38 PM

Pardew wouldn’t get away with his patronising in cockney land.

  • 16 70TWO // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:46 PM

Will Vertonghen be punished retro actively for going down after putting his own face on the opponents head?

  • 18 mag // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:48 PM

The big woman went down like a roll of lino.

  • 19 mindshaft // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:53 PM

Kinel – was hoping spuds were going out of cup so I could take pi55 out of spurs supporting mates – guess I sent those texts too early

  • 20 70TWO // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:56 PM

It can’t be a satisfying victory, knowing you cheated to win.

Andy Townsend is still in denial!

  • 21 manxpie // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:58 PM

70two soldado should get retrospective action for that elbow not that it would hurt spurs in any way

gutted for dnipro tho played well over both legs

  • 22 mag // Feb 27, 2014 at 9:59 PM

    The refs their 12th man.

  • 23 Big Pappa Cissé // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:00 PM

Vertonghen went down faster than a Tai Hooker .

  • 24 Big Pappa Cissé // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:00 PM

    Thai rather 😉

  • 25 70TWO // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:02 PM

I was hoping Sherwoods management would collapse under the additional strain of European Cup matches, but apparently that only happens to Pardew.

  • 26 Big Pappa Cissé // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:06 PM

Is it just me or does Adebayor sound like George Adugadugwengo from Fonejacker ? 🙂 .

  • 27 Belfast // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:08 PM

It was more of a headbutt than the usual ones you see to be fair.

Glad they won, probably wouldn’t have watched another europa league game if they had of went out. Doesn’t really appeal to me with no english teams in it.

  • 28 manxpie // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:09 PM

be nice to have that squad tho wouldn’t it?

they sell there best player and sign about 10 lol

  • 29 70TWO // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:09 PM

Wow! I was completely wrong. I apologise for miss leading any one, Vertonghen really was butted.

  • 30 geordieboy83 // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:16 PM

Evening lads, would anyone here take gylfi sigurdsson from spurs. Think he’s a very underrated player, wouldn’t cost a fortune and suited to the prem.

On free transfers I couldn’t care less if we signed 5 players this summer on free transfers. It’s quality not price I’m interested in. There’s done good freebies out there who without doubt would add quality to our squad
    That’s just 3 who I certainly wouldn’t turn down

  • 31 Belfast // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:18 PM

Aye there was certainly more contact than the usual bollox you see

  • 32 Belfast // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:20 PM

They play Benfica next, should be a decent game

  • 33 manxpie // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:21 PM

more contact but he battered into him twice before it
so asked for it then went down like he’d been shot

as i say soldados was far worse in the 1st half

  • 34 geordieboy83 // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:28 PM

    Menez, cambiasso, kaboul, akinfeev, matuidi,
To name some others. Granted a couple ain’t realistic but just shows what’s out there for free. Sell krul 10 mil or so and have akinfeev on a free. Yes pkease

  • 35 Tsunki // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:30 PM

Oh I see, Spuds blog tonight then. Have we finished auditing the accounts then?

  • 36 Brutooon // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:37 PM

What De Jong did in 3 games is BETTER than Shola Ameobi did in 14 seasons !!!!!!!!

  • 37 RonVanDam // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:38 PM

To me LDJ is more of a inside forward. He feeds and creates opportunities for the CF. He would be more effective in a 4-4-1-1 formation. I hope pardew riverts back to the 4-3-3 formation in which we seem to be more dangerous and attack minded.

  • 38 manxpie // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:43 PM

geordieboy i think matiudi just signed a long contract so no chance there like and has menez signed a new 1?
otherwise he’s on a free at the end of the season wat a freebee that would be!

  • 39 Belfast // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:47 PM

    We burnt the accounts Skunki.

In our defence we were cold

  • 40 geordieboy83 // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:47 PM

Menez definitely has not signed one Manx, by all accounts psg were offering him for free in January if reports are correct. I heard that about matuidi but nowhere can verify the new contract

  • 41 manxpie // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:53 PM

i think he has i seen it on the bbc yesterday
but menez would be absolutely brilliant isn’t he arfas best mate?

  • 42 Marty-Toon // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:55 PM

Will be interesting to see if we do get players in,we certainly need to.
LDJ looks good up front, strong, quick(not even fully match fit for PL) and some good feet.
Benfica have some decent players,I reckon we should be looking at the Spanish and Italian market although often expensive but there’s a lot of unearthed quality players around.
Would help us a lot if some of our defenders could score a few every season,we still look pathetic at corners, good deliveries at times but never look like scoring

  • 43 Belfast // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:56 PM

He signed a new deal a few days ago.

There was rumours man city were prepared to pay him a 10 million signing on fee or something like that lol

    Way out of our league

  • 44 geordieboy83 // Feb 27, 2014 at 10:57 PM

Ah right to be fair he’s out if our league anyway. Menez though would set us on fire I think. Him and Cabella either side of siem and luuk I’ll have some of that lol. Not sure on Ben Arfa being his mate.

  • 45 jimmysmith // Feb 27, 2014 at 11:03 PM

I think our transfer policy clearly has been that if a decent player becomes available at the right price then well buy them and try to fit them into the team even if they are not really bought to order. It doesn’t follow that because there’s money in the bank we’ll start changing our approach. There’s always been money, the owners swimming in it.

On the other, hand he won’t let us flounder either, so yeah, I think there will be signings and I think the club really wants to build a better side, but there’s no guarantees in life, certainly nothing worth having from anything connected to the likes of SD and Wonga.

  • 46 Belfast // Feb 27, 2014 at 11:05 PM

    Yeah agree on Menez like.

Think he’ll probably be looking champions league though

  • 47 manxpie // Feb 27, 2014 at 11:07 PM

anyone see wat pards said about marv?

he said he’s fit but (looking agitated) said he’d see if he’d be involved in the squad
at the same time as saying santon n arfa have knocks

so i think thats his career over here thats an exclusive for ya’s 🙂

  • 48 manxpie // Feb 27, 2014 at 11:19 PM

and finally nufctv have found microphones for the reporters so ya can hear the questions!!
that’ll come out of the summer budget tho

  • 49 Laurent Robert 32 // Feb 27, 2014 at 11:19 PM

Nice one, Alan. Maybe you can set up the team to revolve around making good chances for the striker in the box for once. Judging by what is the norm, probably not then.

  • 50 manxpie // Feb 27, 2014 at 11:31 PM

laurent i said earlier with dummets crosses and corners vs villa it would’ve been good to see wat de jong would’ve done

  • 51 ramajama // Feb 28, 2014 at 12:27 AM

I’d definitely take Gylfi from spurs and on that note i was a little dissapointed we didnt try to hijack Holtby’s loan move to Fulham. Really like Holtby and think we should make a move for him, or Gylfi or even both!

  • 52 Black and White with an army lol // Feb 28, 2014 at 12:30 AM

what’s the point of signing anyone when we have Pardew at the helm?

first sack Pardew then purchase some players.

if I’m honest I rather see Pardew getting the sack rather than Newcastle signing anyone in the summer

  • 53 Black and White with an army lol // Feb 28, 2014 at 12:35 AM

HBA is being wasted with that numbnuts being our manager, I don’t rate Marv at all never have done he’s just another fringe player that needs to be sold on ASAP.

Marv gets about 35-45k a week we could use that on better players

  • 54 beermonkey // Feb 28, 2014 at 12:37 AM

I think were only allowed 2 loans might be wrong

but I do think we should have just bought holtby
he cost spurs a couple of mill so 5 for a player they don’t need

where was that gylfi before spurs he was pretty good and not been to bad for spurs

  • 55 beermonkey // Feb 28, 2014 at 12:42 AM

Black and White with an army lol

its not just marveax on good money obatan jonas
and what does steve taylor on I know when pards took over taylor was gonna leave over cash and pards got them to pay him what he wanted

  • 56 NewcastleMole // Feb 28, 2014 at 1:05 AM

Is it not that Pardew doesn’t know how to accommodate creative players?

Cabaye flourished due to his passing ability but more often than not he was playing very deep spraying balls around.

Its been said loads Pardew can’t get the best from his players. He is rigid in his tactics and game plan and if you don’t buy into it as a player you are dropped. So many first teamers just seem to be going with the flow.

As a manager he is so inconsistent we alternate between Challenging for Europe form and Relegation form. Ive said he’s rigid in his tactics above but is it more than that when he’s got a fit squad we can go on a good run but when he has to change it he loses the plot?

  • 57 Sydney Toon // Feb 28, 2014 at 1:32 AM

I agree with you, Pardew is a defensive manager who relies on the creative players too heavily and when they don’t deliver, out they go.

If we fail to get top 10 with the start he has had, there is little to no excuse. Injuries have been minimal, ill discipline has been an issue and he has not been able to be consistent. He peaks then when we fall, its big losses and points dropped against relegation teams i.e Sunderland for example! I hope, that the new MD/DoF has the balls to get rid of him. If we need to rebuild, the whole lot needs to change.
I say bring in Laudrup, AVB or Sherwood, and lets get a squad worthy of pushing on. I have no doubt that MA has no choice but to spend the profits on the squad, he has nothing to hide behind anymore, or he will sell, which presents a good and bad scenario.

I Personally would bring in the following Players:

    L De Jong – Permanent
    R Cabella – 10m
    A Lallana – 8m
    G Grenier – 12m
    B Gomis – Free
    A Hunt – Free

    P Cisse – 6m
    L Remy – Release
    Sh Ameobi – Release
    G Obertan – 0.5k
    S Marveaux – 2m
    J Guti – 2m

    Bring Through:
    C Good
    A Campbell
    M Abeid

I think with a new Manager, the perspective of some of our returning loan players will hopefully mean we can actually get a grasp of whether these kids are any good.

Consider also the wage bill, a lot of the players leaving are on excellent money, and the new players in would not be excessive wages, possibly Gomis, Grenier and Lallana would command 50k+ wages.
