We are hoping there will be significant transfer funds available to Newcastle this summer, so we can bring in a number of (very) good players to replace those who will leave, and to also strengthen the squad so hopefully we can challenge for the top six in the Premier League next season.
Aaron Hunt – Werder Bremen midfielder
However, there’s nothing wrong with picking up some good deals when they are available, and there are a couple of free agents in the summer that Newcastle have continually been linked with.
One is 27 year-old German International midfielder Aaron Hunt, whose contract at Werder Bremen runs out in the summer, and although the German club have offered Aaron a new four year deal, he has not yet signed it.
The left footed attacking midfielder will be in some demand if he runs out his contract, and those clubs linked with the player are Newcastle, Southampton and Tottenham.
Hunt has been at Bremen since 2001 and made his team debut for the German side in September 2004, after he had just turned 18.
The 6 foot tall midfielder has played 273 times for his Bundesliga club and scored 47 goals with 47 assists, which is a good record, and we think he would be a very good acquisition for Newcastle.
Bafe Gomis – Lyon striker
The other free agent is of course Bafe Gomis, who we almost signed last summer for £9M, but his agent wanted too much money and Joe Kinnear couldn’t get the deal over the line.
And we have to think that is Newcastle were interested in the striker then for £9M they will be interested now even though the striker is now a year older at 28, and he turns 29 in August.
By our records Newcastle were after this lad when he was at Saint Etienne way back in 2008, even before he joined Lyon in 2009.
Gomis has done well in his five years at Lyon, and in 224 appearances he has 89 goals and 21 assists, and he has 12 full caps for France with three goals.
However, late in January Inter-Milan became interested in the player – so we may have the Italian giants as competition for the 6 foot tall striker.
If we can get Aaron and Bafe on board early in the summer, it would be a decent start to what is going to be a very important transfer window for Newcastle United.
What do you think?

I am going to try to not get sucked into the belief that we are going to sign a superstar anytime soon -I will disbelieve any such suggestions. I was nearly convinced that we were going to buy a hot player last year – I fall for it every season.
Now then, no prizes for guessing, which player in the Bundesliga is doing really well and is joint second top scorer (despite playing less games) than Ramos of Berlin and Lewandowski of Dortmund who are both on 14 league goal each. Yes you’ve guessed it -Pierre Emerick Aubameyang. He’s on 13 goals or 16 in 29 games in all competitions. Clearly a top player – really I delude myself in thinking he was coming to the Toon.
Just been reading a profile about him- I knew he was fast -but he’s now being referred to as electric or Ussain Boltesque -such is his speed.
In a recent game -he gave an opposition player a 40 metre head start -chased back and got the challenge in.
Couple of quotes.-
“The whole coaching staff have spoken to me quite a lot and explained a lot of things so that I’m better defensively,” he said this week – and his self-sacrifice on behalf of the team was evident in his racing back to apprehend Alex Meier on Saturday, “despite Meier having a 40-metre headstart” as Klopp stated admiringly.
But Klopp is also aware his jet-heeled asset has one other precious commodity. “It’s easier to teach the things which are not optimal than to teach someone to be dangerous in front of goal. He has the goalscoring instinct in him,” the Dortmund boss told Kicker, a statement backed up by Aubameyang’s second goal against Frankfurt for which he just stepped away from goalkeeper Kevin Trapp to create the space needed should the ball drop to him.
I need to stop dreaming -like we all do – we are sold the con each season and lap it up.

But being a free agent means they can have their pick of clubs. Without a hefty transfer fee to pay other clubs will be prepared to offer much better salaries than us.
Shame.

Comment #5Buying free agents seems to make sense, however is it not a false economy as there is more of an emphasis on satisfying the individual player/agents heightened pay demands. Is this not what the problem with Marveuax and why we can not shift him on to another club?

Comment #6The tight wad will fill the squad with freebies and cheap imports that will listen to his useless manager, decent ambitious players will avoid signing like the plague.

Comment #9Ian Toon -afternoon -thank you. I know it’s stupid now -but could you imagine a trio of Cabaye Remy and Aubameyang in our team. Mouthwatering -but I do not see a standard like that at SJP anytime soon or even in the distant future. Such a shame.

Comment #10Free isnt free for us though
We signed Demba Ba on a “free” and the club were quick to point out that while we didn’t pay a transfer fee for him he cost millions in Agents fees, signing on fees ect.
