Curtain Coming Down On This Newcastle Player

6:16 pm, Tuesday, March 18th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 176 Comments

In the second half of last season Shola Ameobi did not get much playing time at all, and it hasn’t been too  different this season, but it’s still very likely  the 32 year-old veteran Newcastle striker will make the Nigerian squad for the World Cup in Brazil in June.

Shola Ameobi v Blackpool_2979380

Shola Ameobi – has made 389 appearances for Newcastle

That will be very good for Shola, and we almost said it would be a fitting end to his career, but he will probably be picked up in the summer, since he becomes a free agent on July 1st, after his contract has run out at Newcastle – and it will not be renewed.

Crustal Palace manager Tony Pulis has always been keen on Ameobi, so maybe he will try to sign Shola in the summer – if Palace avoid relegation.

Shola is not happy he isn’t getting much playing time on Tyneside, and he had this to say in the Shields Gazette today:

“It’s frustrating for me, but I just have to bide my time.” “I’ve loved my time in Newcastle, no more so than when I’m playing. “I just want to help the team.”

“When that doesn’t happen, it’s frustrating. I know the manager picks a team he thinks can win. We have to respect that as a player, but it doesn’t stop it being frustrating.”

“Hopefully, I can help us in these last nine games and get us as high as we can.”

Shola doesn’t have too many appearances to make this season, but we need somebody who can score goals while Loic Remy is out injured, but Shola has just one Capital One Cup goal this season so far.

At the moment Shola has made 389 total appearances for the Magpies with 77 goals.

The Nigerian born player made his debut for the Magpies against Chelsea back in September of 2000, when he was just 18, when Alan Shearer was out injured, and the great Bobby Robson was the Newcastle manager.

Although Shola has his critics, he’s been a good servant to Newcastle, and we’d love to see him return as a coach at Newcastle, sometime down the road.

Comments welcome.

Note: Lewis Williams is in his final year at the University of West London (UWL) studying for a BSc (Hons) in Construction Management, and he is busy on his dissertation on Site Waste Management Plans and he has a survey he needs filled out.

This survey is for anyone who has been part of a construction project (past or present) that used some form of waste management on the project. See if you can help him with they survey here.

I think we will sign these players in the summer:

    Gomis – Free
    Mauro Zarate – £5m
    Benteke – £12m
    Doumbia – £12m
    Grenier – £11m
    Cabella – £11m
    Gourcuff – £6m
    Alderweireld – £5m
    Jay Kunt – £1m

  • 2 viv // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:27 PM

Coming down he’s been finished for years.

  • 3 Graeme // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:29 PM

Kets, that’s £63 million!!! There is absolutely zero chance that the Illustrious Owner is going to sanction that sort of payout.

  • 4 croftus5678 // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:30 PM

was never really any good and only avg at his best (which is norm against scumderland)

cisse now becoming the same way although i hope i’m very wrong about that !

and as much as i think luuk is awsome at everything he does apart from the power of his shots i just cant see the power coming and we dont really play for the poacher in front of goal that i think he is.

goofy as our main striker next season so far >.< followed by armstrong then campbell so think we need atleast one very very good striker at the minimum.

  • 5 Ibizatoon // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:30 PM

There has to be a joke in Ashley being willing to pay £1m for Jay Kunt….just has to be.

  • 6 guvnor // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:33 PM

Shola is a very lucky player who has made a lot of money from Newcastle for doing very little. Keegan tried to offload him when he took charge for the second spell but for some reason Keegan was offloaded and Shola survived.

  • 7 croftus5678 // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:37 PM

i’d splash the 20mil for lukaku tbh ! cabella would be my second priority as he can play left or middle.

goofy is a must for a striker next season imo so sammy/aarons would play as left wing when cabella was not playing.

  • 8 Ketsbaia9 // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:38 PM

We’re going to have to splash that amount out if we want to finish in the top 4.

  • 9 Ketsbaia9 // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:39 PM

We need 2 centre backs, 1 left winger, 2 attacking midfielders and 3 strikers.

  • 10 eric // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:41 PM

Fourteen years this blokes been at Newcastle United shocking his goal ratio is a joke I hope he isn’t the only one going in the summer his manager needs to go along with most of the others in the team.

  • 11 eric // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:43 PM

We need a completely new team of players instead of a couple of shirt fillers. Ashley has to spend some of that dosh he hides away.

  • 12 Ketsbaia9 // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:43 PM

    Sorry, I meant Jack Hunt.

  • 13 Ketsbaia9 // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:45 PM

Look at the difference Remy makes. Its essential to sign a striker of his quality. De Jong isn’t good enough. Cisse has the remainder of the season to prove himself.

  • 14 welshgeordie9 // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:46 PM

I thought I got away with that oh well

  • 15 welshgeordie9 // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:47 PM

Right then back to my old ways who am I going to argue with tonight

  • 16 eric // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:48 PM

Ashley should give pardew a permanent stadium ban with his P45.

  • 17 jazzyp // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:48 PM

Shola has been loyal to the club but that’s all I can say really. The season we went down I think he was about 6th or 7th choice striker, so just shows how backwards we have gone in this position. At best he’s championship level and should be nowhere near the first team

  • 18 Ketsbaia9 // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:50 PM

Yoann Gourcuff could be a good Cabaye replacement. Great player. Mauro Zarate is proven in the premier league. Doumbia is maybe a big ask, apart from that, I think we’ll go for most of those players.

  • 19 welshgeordie9 // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:50 PM

Would anybody on here say that I’m a wind-up merchant, I dont think I am

Oh pick me! Welshie lad pick me!

WUM? You? Well, I think you like to wind yourself up and anyone willing to join you for the ride.

    Kets…Didn’t think I’d heard of him :)

Jazzyp…He can sometimes hold the ball up well…. sadly, not enough. Will always remember him fondly, but generally not for footballing reasons, which says it all really. Wish him well with whatever he does next, most importantly I hope he has a good World Cup (and no, I don’t mean that sarcastically).

  • 23 welshgeordie9 // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:55 PM

What the hell has Sammy done he hasn’t played much football

  • 24 bob // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:57 PM

Can’t pick you, I would if you had a sense of humour

  • 26 Ibizatoon // Mar 18, 2014 at 6:59 PM

Sammy’s an odd one. There’s something about him that I like, however I do have strong doubts that he’ll ever be able to fulfill any sort of potential that he should…if you know what I mean.

  • 27 Toon-Prodigy // Mar 18, 2014 at 7:01 PM

As much as I don’t like saying this with Shola being a local lad, it has to be said this kind of loyalty to players at NUFC can only stagnate any kind of progression.

I hope to see Newcastle being alot more ruthless in the future and bringing the necessary quality in when needed.

I don’t blame Shola for this, the lad has served his time here with respect and has been a model pro, he has lived the dream. His quality though a a premier league striker is very dubious.

He’s a very fortunate lad and sure he is aware of that.

  • 28 bob // Mar 18, 2014 at 7:02 PM

Sammys that good he can’t get on that bench so we can safely say he’s on his bike with his bruv.

  • 29 welshgeordie9 // Mar 18, 2014 at 7:02 PM

I got a funny feeling drogba will be the one who knocks cheslsea out of the champions league tonight.

  • 30 welshgeordie9 // Mar 18, 2014 at 7:03 PM

Some of you are weird, I hope Sammy stays and do well

  • 31 Ketsbaia9 // Mar 18, 2014 at 7:04 PM

Marveaux should start in every game until the end of the season now. We need creativity.

  • 36 guvnor // Mar 18, 2014 at 7:09 PM

All the Ameobis should be moved out along with Williamson Marveuax Obertan Gosling de Jong Cisse anita Saylor Raylor Elliott benny and Pardew.

  • 37 Ibizatoon // Mar 18, 2014 at 7:09 PM

Toon Prodigy…You hear Pardew talking a lot about wanting to bring through more local players. Sounds a charming idea in principle, but the probable reality is they consider it cheaper to do.

Hopefully the next lot turn out a bit more committed and able than wor Shola, I get the feeling we may well see a few of them in the near future. If we’re going to pay them wages, we’re going to expect them to play. Great system if they’re good enough.

Kets…I don’t see why not really. Unless they’ve already decided he is definitely off, in which case bed in someone else. Give him a good chance to prove his starting position, a fair few others have been given extended chances to prove themselves in the past, why not Marveaux, who granted, can be extremely creative and effective. Some times.

  • 39 Ibizatoon // Mar 18, 2014 at 7:11 PM

guvnor…No one else you can think of?

I think we’re perhaps asking a little too much of the club to expect them to be able to replace that many players in one window.

Is that a yes or a no

  • 48 Ibizatoon // Mar 18, 2014 at 7:20 PM

guvnor…Not disputing that all couldn’t be upgraded (although I actually think Willo does himself proud, but could obviously be improved upon), but we don’t have enough of a team as it is to lose 13 players, as there is no way that Ashley would get that many new players signed, not even close. As for Pardew, not a chance he’s going anywhere soon, otherwise he’d have been fired after the recent “headbutt” incident.

    Ibiza,

It’s a great idea if they are Wayne Rooney’s.

I fear this is Mike’s idea of a cheap go around though.

What I don’t want to see is it being forced when the quality and potential was never really there to begin with, all to save money or to not invest in proven quality players.

Im all for youth coming through so long as they are really outstanding footballers. This is the premier league after all.

@ big pappa cissie, there is no real height in your team esp the forward line, I don’t rate sissoko as a good header of the ball. Juuk needs to be included for his heading ability.

De Jong doesn’t look that great to me. He’s had a few games for Holland when they were looking around and a failed stint at a similar sized club to us in a less competitive league and that’s about it. Obviously a decent player but we need better if we are going to progress. If we sign him it’ll likely signal 5 more modest years for us. He isn’t much of a goal scoring threat at all as far as I can telland this is the EPL. If he signs you’d be left hoping its simply to replace Shola, not Remy.

    Out of 10 chances,

    3 chances he will slip

4 chances he will pass back to the opponent

3 chances he will foul the opponent – then COMPLAINT to the ref and SMILE

NUFC will win something if Shola is out of the team. He bring negativity to the team and thats the reason Cisse can’t score any goal

    Yep good answer

  • 115 jimmysmith // Mar 18, 2014 at 10:26 PM

Manx, I’ll admit I haven’t fully got my head around a player like him as a withdrawn number 9. Although Fellaini played that way for Everton with some success. Maybe there is something more there, I suppose well have a better idea if Cisse starts firing or more likely when Remy returns.

  • 116 beermonkey // Mar 18, 2014 at 10:32 PM

    manxpie

I tend to agree with you on ldj
but would you want to spend 8mill on a striker with no goals in him just a good hold up man?

I think he will score before the end of the season and so far I like what I see but he needs a few goals
other than that his all round play has been ok and getting better

  • 117 manxpie // Mar 18, 2014 at 10:41 PM

jimmy there is more there mate but he also needs the service

beer i’d like us to spend 8 mill on anyone tbh

but as i said wat i’ve seen so far from him he’s a perfect striker for an attackin midfield and if arfa would cross and we still had cabeye and then remy on the left of a front three
i think that would’ve worked very very well but hey this owner knows wat he’s doing!! lol

he’s also unselfish which in recent years with our strikers has been missing he said himself about creating for others
    how many strikers say that?

weather free or 8mill I don’t care if there the right player
didn’t we bid around 12mill for him and he chose the other club

we seem to have a few selfish players which not a trait you want from wide,
I like goofy he seems to get his head before he does anything

  • 121 Novocastrian66 // Mar 18, 2014 at 11:20 PM

Cannot wait for the day Shola is off the payroll.

  • 122 manxpie // Mar 18, 2014 at 11:22 PM

beer yeah i’ve said for along time goof has been our best signing but we’ve got such a disjointed squad its unbelievable actually

yeah he turned us down but he was young and dreamed of champions league footy and tbh was probably offered more money
but remy did the same for just the money and we all love him now lol
i just feel he’s the kind of player we need and would do well with 2-3 extra attacking signings
but will it happen i doubt it

  • 123 manxpie // Mar 18, 2014 at 11:29 PM

novo he’ll be on the payroll again and probably for a long long time and i hope he does tbf infact he could be manager 1 day! sweet dreams :)

remy has been excellent for us
but he went for the cash last time not for glory
I got no probs if you go for glory
if we did sign remy it would grate on me for a short time atleast lol

I hope we sign ldj I think its a type of player pards wants but we need to bring in the wide men to go with him and a cabs replacement. given time he could be a foil for cisse

  • 125 beermonkey // Mar 18, 2014 at 11:33 PM

  • 126 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 18, 2014 at 11:35 PM

Can someone tell me what Gouffran does on the wing ? .

For me he is a central striker and our second best forward on current form .

  • 127 manxpie // Mar 18, 2014 at 11:46 PM

lol beer at least till his next goal
can’t see us signing him tho he’ll blab on about wanting champions league footy from about the end of april and then go to the team that offers the most money unfortunately

on ldj i do too and i think this summer really is a rebuilding situation wether it happens is and will be a mystery but as you said wide men are as important as our strikers if not more

i said ages ago our last out n out winger (with experience) was duff!!
now that is a joke in its self

it’d be nice to see structured signings like simply haveing 2 players for each position
but i can see us buying another cm or lb instead of a forward or cabeye replacement
there’s no structure at all from the manager to the top
but i don’t believe its the managers fault in this process

  • 128 manxpie // Mar 18, 2014 at 11:50 PM

BPC scores 6 goals and helped out santon on many many occasions and also showed massive work rate and passion
put sum of our squad to shame actually

who else would you put there?

  • 129 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 18, 2014 at 11:54 PM

    @ Manx

Someone who can get to some crosses into the box and get assists .

Not saying Gouffran should not be playing, just not out wide.

  • 130 beermonkey // Mar 18, 2014 at 11:57 PM

    manxpie

what ever we do it will be the bear minimum and not enough
we could only 6mill if we get the right players in and all positions covered I will be quite happy I think to many people get blinded by what is spent

    big papa
he aint got a cross but his work rate is why he is out there its a shame as I would like to see him up front more he aint got a bad goal return
he also seems the type of player that wont bitch and complain so until he goes and bangs on pards door or we buy a decent winger he will prob stay out there

  • 131 manxpie // Mar 18, 2014 at 11:57 PM

BPC yeah but who is there?

thats my problem there isn’t anyone we have such an uneven squad it’s a joke

our last out n out winger was duff mate unless you include ober and guti

  • 132 jimmysmith // Mar 18, 2014 at 11:58 PM

Well, he works the flanks and drives into the box, as does Sissoko. Pardew has his critics, but I think the way he sets us up the best way possible with the players we have or did when we had Cabaye.

Now, I think he’s back to scratching his head. The squad still isn’t right and never has been under the Ashley model. We had some chancers when Ashley arrived but the balance of the squad he bought into was better than anything he’s given his managers since, I think, for the premier league.

  • 133 beermonkey // Mar 18, 2014 at 11:58 PM

beer i’m the same if we got a full squad of 2 in each position for free i’d be happy lol

but the fact we don’t spend and still are desperately short in some positions is shocking i’m still in hope (stupidly) that this is all for a sale

I dont why people keep talking about all these players being signed in summer cant you tell with carver talking up the kids that they will be in our first team next year?

Jak Alnwick, Remie Streete, Curtis Good, Massadio Haïdara, Paul Dummett, James Tavernier?,
Gaël Bigirimana, Mehdi Abeid, Sammy Ameobi,
    Haris Vuckic?, Adam Campbell?
Olivier Kemen, Rolando Aarons, Conor Newton?,

  • 138 manxpie // Mar 19, 2014 at 12:11 AM

sorry BPC but marveaux for me doesn’t deserve a start let alone a touch of the ball lol

and arfa is pointless on the wing imo he doesn’t cross especially when he should do and on the left he hasn’t even bothered (everton)

arfa should be our number 10 now to see how he does especially now we’re safe and fack all to play for

  • 139 HAZZY1 // Mar 19, 2014 at 12:12 AM

If we did bring atleast some of these kids up would be people still be upset that we didnt spend on out side talent?
I for 1 hope the kids I metion’d do make the step up sick of these wanna be french players who dont even try for shirt as long as they get a pay check lets back the kids and bring back the good feeling of watching young hungry players wanting to prove they can make it.

  • 142 jimmysmith // Mar 19, 2014 at 12:16 AM

Marv and Benny don’t keep the shape in attack or defence. It’s about time we recognized that those two players wont figure in any meaningful way from here on in, as it seems Pardew has.

In hindsight, we should perhaps of built a side around Cabs and Benny coming off that somewhat fortunate 5th place finish. We didn’t and that opportunity has come and long since gone, I think.

  • 143 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 19, 2014 at 12:17 AM

    @ Manx

Why not give Marv a chance ? .

Things clearly aren’t working at the minute and we have little to no creativity in midfield and is part of the reason we can’t score .

HBA can be greedy but he does have a decent cross and will bring more to the table offensively than Gouff on the wing for sure .

  • 144 manxpie // Mar 19, 2014 at 12:19 AM

hazzy well mbabu was in the last training pics with armstrong so could see them 2 by the end of the season and why not now with nothing to play for
and if we’re gonna be a mid table team for a while why not do it with some very good youngsters

thats our future could be good but probably catastrophic lol

  • 145 beermonkey // Mar 19, 2014 at 12:22 AM

    big pappa cisse
on paper it is ok but you just know in practise its a recipe for disaster or brilliance

    manxpie

a bit of hope is ok but deep down we all know wots gonna happen and this why tensions seem really high

the club are not goin to want to up the wage budget I think its about 65%
and on good money we have Jonas obertan marv then benny until these are moved on I dont think any will come in, but who the hell will want them and pay them enough to wanna make them leave us I dont think we will struggle to sell benny but with a year left he might wanna sit and leave for free

  • 146 HAZZY1 // Mar 19, 2014 at 12:24 AM

manxpie yeah soz forgot mbabu another who deserves a chance of first team football I only ask about the kids cause people on here keep saying we dont have a big enough squad and we need 7-9 players in the summer to replace the deadwood but I dont see why we should if we have good enough kids waiting lets give them a chance to prove themselves and if it works great if not atleast we can prove to other kids that they will get a chance at the moment no decent kids would want to join as they have no chance of playing like chelsea they buy lots of kids then leave send on loan then sell?

  • 147 beermonkey // Mar 19, 2014 at 12:30 AM

    hazzy1

I think most on here love it when one kids come into the first team it dont happen often enough but some can be fickle if they play bad for a couple of games

I like lots on here keep an eye on all the players out onloan on sat and sun its on here pretty quick when one scores
pards said the other day that quite a few in the youth fa cup were going to get new deals soon be intresting to see who there lookin to keep

  • 148 beermonkey // Mar 19, 2014 at 12:34 AM

good is back injured but him and abied looks like Armstrong and mbabu
will join up with the first team in pre season

I just hope if there not ready they go back out onloan
cambel should have gone out onloan last season but due to strikers he was kept back at the club and when he got on he played out on the left

  • 149 jimmysmith // Mar 19, 2014 at 12:38 AM

I agree that for Ashley’s model to work these kids need to be blooded. Obviously they need to be good enough and so good judgement and timing is so important.

In life, you have to constantly adjust and change to deal with realities. I suppose the club might have got itself into a position where it might be able to bring on kids as well as younger but more established players. If there was ever gonna be a happy ending to all this, you’d think that would have to be it, far fetched as it seems, as so often it’s appeared our plans have come to little up to now.

In truth, I’d love an organic competitive side rather than a bought one. I’d be happy to support that, even if we couldn’t realistically challenge for titles. At least in the short to medium term.

  • 150 HAZZY1 // Mar 19, 2014 at 12:39 AM

beermonkey I also keep a lookout for our players on loan thats why im suprised gosling still isnt get a chance when we need a Mid player to burst into box he played great for blackpool but he comes back and is wasted on the bench I hope Abeid isnt watching this as he may decide he wants to move to greece I cant see the players I ? marked making it but I hope they prove me wrong. My main concern is we have no english players playing week in week out so miss that grid and fight we need ie Nolan Barton?

  • 151 manxpie // Mar 19, 2014 at 12:44 AM

bpc sorry but i just answered ya with a long rant about marv and why arfa is infuriating to his strikers but it didn’t post lol and sorry at this time of night i can’t be arsed (just like marv) to write it again soz

hazzy aye that would be a very good thing but if it was judged just on this blog imagine out of all your choices how many shouldn’t be here or are league 2 standard?

carver said it right it takes a big player to play in front of 52,000 passionate fans and for a young player here it takes more than like a sunderland or a southampton

  • 152 beermonkey // Mar 19, 2014 at 1:07 AM

cant work out y gosling was not bought on last week

I think he is in the same position as marv and benny and for wot ever reason pards don’t want them and wont play them unless he has to

  • 164 catchy in norway // Mar 19, 2014 at 8:03 AM

the blog is dying, only the ones who follow and believe in pardew are the ones that want to be here,

the club is dying a very slow death right now, it has 2 cancers,
1, a big tumor in the head (Ashley) its affecting all the serious decisions at the club, I,e the direction of the club is going, the sponsors , the manager,

no2, this is the stomach cancer, (pardew) he is in this job by pure luck, every man and his dog did not want him, his style of football is contain, he suppresses any attacking instinct any of our players have, replacing it with a defensive mind set,
god forbid we go a goal behind, he stands there clueless making the same useless subs in most of our games,
blames anyone and everyone for anything that goes wrong,

I for one will not watch another game while both of these are at the club, it does not make you a hero because you can go and watch this happening to our club, it does not make you a better supporter because you can do this also, when I here fans say “I watch worse than this in the 80s” this is not the 80s, back then no one really new anything about the owners or the board members running clubs, just names,

right now we know everything about the club, the owners wealth is there for all to see, the clubs revenue is there for all to see, the internet / media gives us so much info, I find it very hard to sit here and just accept it,

im betting there will be a thread very soon thanking Shola for his time here, and for the life of me I do not know how he has lasted his whole career at our club, he seemed to be a kid with promise until he was about 29 :( , all he has done is score a few goals v the unwashed and held back some of our younger kids,

    hmmm very sad

  • 165 Ian Toon // Mar 19, 2014 at 8:04 AM

Jail- Good Morning. Why do you always go on the defensive when someone disagrees with you! Accepting that others measure themselves and the world differently than you do is one of the most important steps to being a well balanced mature individual. You may not accept a person’s ideas or behaviour but the mark of a wise person is your always learning and thereby growing as an individual.

On the football front why not join the toon army and go on an away trip. The Liverpool game at the end of the season would be a good learning experience and provide a sense of perspective of the highs and lows of supporting ones local team.

  • 166 Jail for Ashley // Mar 19, 2014 at 8:12 AM

    catchy

The club is not dying mate, it will still be here long after you and I have gone.

It could be run a lot better, we could try for a better manager and the fans should be treated with more respect. Pardrew works with what he is given, and has done a reasonable job under the circumstances. I have said before that I don’t like the man and will be happy when he has gone, but if you put yourself in his shoes, he has had our best players sold from under him in mid seasons, had no reinforcements brought in to help strengthen the squad, and has managed to get us into 9th place in the league with the possibility of a higher finish.

I understand your frustration with the club, I feel the same. but I also try to look at the situation objectively.

I don’t think the summer transfer window will be as busy as most people seem to think, 2-3 maybe in is about the best we can hope for, Maybe as the finances grow stronger better things on the field may follow. But who knows?
