The Independent are reporting that Newcastle would like to bring Arsenal right full-back Carl Jenkinson to Newcastle during the summer.
Carl Jenkinson – Newcastle interested
The Harlow-born Jenkinson joined Arsenal in 20011 after leaving a club Alan Pardew used to manage – Charlton Athletic – and he’s played 54 times for Arsenal and has one full cap for England, and has also played for all the English Youth sides.
Carl has been battling French International Bacary Sagna for the right back spot at Arsenal, but Bacary will leave Arsenal when his contract runs out at the end of June, and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will bring in another top young player at right back to replace the Frenchman.
We’re not sure why Newcastle are targeting a right back, since we have Mathieu Debuchy, Davide Santon. Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Ryan Taylor, who can play in that position.
But maybe it’s in case our top French International Mathieu Debuchy will leave the club in the summer.
Carl is English and Alan Pardew has made it known that he wants more English players in his squad, but we wonder how much Newcastle will have to pay for a 22 year-old English International – maybe Carl could come in for around £5M?
Jenkinson fits the profile of players Mike Ashley wants to bring to Newcastle, he’s young and only turned 22 last month, and he is an attack minded right back and will only improve with more Premier League experience.
He has appeared 19 times for Arsenal this season, and that includes three games in the Champions League.
We hope Newcastle are not targeting the right back in case the club expects to sell Mathieu Debuchy this summer, because at some point we have to keep our best players and not sell them to the highest bidder, which we have just done with Yohan Cabaye.
That’s assuming Mike Ashley wants to build a top team that can challenge for the top six in the Premier League.
