Good John Carver Interview After Game – Video

7:22 pm, Saturday, March 22nd, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 176 Comments

Here’s John Carver’s interview after the 1-0 win against Crystal Palace today – it’s a good interview and John admits to being under some pressure at the moment.

Alan Pardew had a land line into John Carver today and they had a number of discussions and Alan will be joining the players for a drink later today.

And Mike Ashley made a rare appearance at St. James’ Park today.

[youtube id=”4YStMoKzWa4″ mode=”normal” align=”left”]

It’s just great to get a win again.

i can see where you were coming from.
HBA is a one of them players who can cause the blog to go into mayhem, on his day he can be a great player. the problem comes at the times he is not playing as he should because that is where their is massive divide on the blog people like me accuse him of being a hazard and very inconsistant but people like BPC take the easy route and blame pardew.

    March 22, 2014

As for the team nothing to talk about today another late goal, we came seconds away from the only match with no goals, if we play well Tuesday then I will talk a lot about the match, as for everything else to do with the club I’ve talked a lot like

    1. Who’s coming in the summer
    2. Who’s leaving
    3. Play Armstrong a lot more

So I have probably talked more on here than you

  • 31 BarnoldswickMag // Mar 22, 2014 at 7:53 PM

    yeah pal 🙂

  • 32 welshgeordie9 // Mar 22, 2014 at 7:55 PM

    guvnor hahaha that is all!

  • 39 The next Mike Williamson // Mar 22, 2014 at 7:57 PM

Would it do any harm for Pardew to use Armstrong, Bigi, & Aarons on the bench instead of Shola, Gosling, & Marveaux. Not only are they crap, but theyre all leaving anyway. This is a golden opportunity to play youths. If he refuses to play them now when the hell will he?

  • 40 manxpie // Mar 22, 2014 at 7:58 PM

    don’t agree on wat!!!??

  • 46 firebug666 // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:02 PM

    The next Mike Williamson

Been saying the same thing for the last week mate, now is the time to experiment with the team and see who could step up, and what formation would suit them.

Our manager is short sighted when it comes to experimentation, he will not pick a formation to suit the players, instead he expects the players to fit his style, even when it is obvious to the rest of us that they are struggling with it.

  • 47 BarnoldswickMag // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:03 PM

Just ignore them fella, they are clearly looking for a reaction.

  • 48 manxpie // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:04 PM

    the next willo

its a good shout but the problem in a round about way is theres 52000 fans wanting and paying for a performance plus we are actually still in with a chance of europe (probably not) but still a chance

i feel if we are out of the running for europe we’ll start using the youngsters so probably sooner than later lol

  • 49 guvnor // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:07 PM

  • 56 BarnoldswickMag // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:16 PM

Same, im really happy for cisse,he deserved a goal for the shift he put in today.

  • 57 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:17 PM

Was reading some pretty decent comments from earlier and thought tonight might be open to some proper discussion only to be let down by the most recent thread being full of nonsense, bile and s**t stirring.

How about instead of constantly trying to goad Belfast into a dispute so you can then retreat and play martyr you actually try and talk about football?

So anyway, HBA assist and Cisse goal apparently means they are worth keeping? I for one won’t be willing to persist for HBA so he can come up with 1 assist every 10 games. The man is mutton dressed as lamb. Only difference between him and the majority of the squad is that people think he’s good when he’s actually pretty average. The rest of the squad don’t pretend to be anything but pretty average.

As for Cisse? 2 goals all season? 1st from open play comes in March? Need I say any more that this man is not to be hailed as our leading man next season, yet without any investment from Mikey this is exactly what he will be?

Anyone else predicting relegation trouble next season?

  • 58 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:18 PM

Thought he was a mixed bag tbh mate
When he came on he looked rusty, kind if just wandered around, when ever he got the ball he just knocked it back to the passer and stood there
But he definitely grew into the game, looked sharper as it went on, still looked a bit indecisive with some if his decision making but he’s been out for a while
Didn’t think he looked fully fit so not expecting to see him start Tuesday but maybe get a good 45 mins in the second half see if he can add some consistency!

  • 59 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:20 PM

It’s everyone’s business when your sole purpose is coming on to goad people in to an argument
It’s boring as hell to read and no coincidence the blog posts dropped right down when your opening post is where’s that little pr1ck…

Talk more football than anyone? Barely see you mention the toon…

  • 60 manxpie // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:22 PM

it used to be ruddy too but he’s just got borin now lol (soz ruddy) 🙂
scottie lets hope so wud love to smash everton they’ve done pretty much wat we did in our 5th season
i’e not had many injuries but had a great goal scorer and won when they haven’t played well

we need debuchy back tho he seriously adds to our attack plus dummet looked knackered in the last 20 so maybe hiadara next game

  • 61 firebug666 // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:23 PM

It will depend on what happens in the summer, but I agree with you about Benny. Cisse could have had a few more today and looked better than he has all season, hopefully he will get a few more now.

If we were starting the season with this squad I would be very worried about relegation. We really are less than average with the style of football we play.

God help us if we have a poor summer.

  • 62 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:23 PM

I used to be what? I can’t well be offended if I don’t know what you’re on about haha

  • 63 BarnoldswickMag // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:26 PM

We will be in a relegation scrap if we dont do business in the summer transfer window. LDJ doesnt seem good enough, remy is obviously going, cisse isnt good enough and shola is a waste of space that shouldnt be making the bench. We need a st who is going to score at least 10-15 next season a long with way more creativity. I think we will be because i just cant see ashley getting what we need. Maybe a couple of loan deals but that isnt great if there valuation goes up if they do good at newcastle. Just like remy.

  • 64 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:28 PM

    @ Ciaran

What has Gouffran done on the wing then may I ask ? .

Yes he was decent in the early part of the season but he has done nothing for the last few months, yet he isn’t popular to have a go at for some reason .

  • 65 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:29 PM

Some people are so desperate for any flash of skill or flair that they will forgive everything that is wrong with HBA; his selfishness, his inability to pick out a pass, his lack of a right foot, his shocking crossing ability, his poor goals/assists record, his lack of work rate, his lack of fitness etc just because they know that once every 4/5 months, he will do something pretty special.

Does that make him a good player? No. Suarez does something special every single game. As does Hazard. HBA is a pale imitation of these players.

Cisse has been shite for nearly 2 years now. Well done for doing your job and actually finding the net. How about you do it another 20 times and then I might change my mind.

3 points completely undeserved. Only plus side is that it might relegate the Scum so we won’t be measuring the success of our season based on the derby games.

    Oh how we have fallen.

  • 66 manxpie // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:29 PM

ruddy this summer is massive no doubt about it
the pictures of ashley today at the ground he looked ill tbh
but i really can’t see the overhall we need happening especially in 1 window

we need at least 2 strikers 2 wingers a rb (maybe 2) and at least 1 cb in 1 window and thats at least 4 big money buys
not gonna happen for me unfortunately

  • 67 firebug666 // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:30 PM

    Thanks for the opinion mate.

Yeah he did look rusty, and was hardly seen in the first five minutes. I also notice he looked rusty, and did not seem to be reading the game well. He did get better, but still has a tendency to try running through the defence when passing is the better option.

Not sure if his cross for Cisse was a cross or another shot gone wrong, but Cisse did well today.

  • 68 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:30 PM

Gouffran works hard and doesn’t pretend to be something he isn’t. He’s a grafter who works for the team. And even despite being less gifted than HBA he has done more in 12 months in terms of goals/assists than HBA has done in 3 years.

    Doesn’t take a genius pal.

  • 69 manxpie // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:32 PM

lol ruddy u used to be more well i don’t know actually probably fiery is the right word maybe obnoxious
in otherwords a mouthy cnut lol

  • 70 welshgeordie9 // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:33 PM

If Belfast and manxpie bitch late at night when I am not on then will respond

It was comments they made is why keep having a go

What the hell has it got to do with you anyway

That’s how it started in the first place other people sticking their noise in

And I do talk about football

  • 71 BarnoldswickMag // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:35 PM

why keep a grudge over someone for something like that ? They shouldnt do it but its boring now.

  • 72 firebug666 // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:38 PM

To be fare Cisse has spent most of this season on the bench, and as you know our ability in the final third is poor.

Cisse is a poacher and needs the ball played in front of him. He does stray offside a lot, and has snatched at a lot of his chances. Even so I think in the right formation, and with some creativity in the final third he will get back to scoring goals.

Benny has been very poor of late, and being an optimist I am hoping that he has had a good kick up the backside and will now produce some of that magic us fans love.

  • 73 welshgeordie9 // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:38 PM

so you wouldn’t mind then if Belfast turned around and said he shagged your mother

    That’s why I continue

  • 74 manxpie // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:38 PM

welsh i have never bitched about ya and i don’t think belfast has either when your not on but please prove me wrong!!!

  • 75 manxpie // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:39 PM

welsh ya lucky he didn’t tell ya wat he did to ya dad!!

  • 76 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:39 PM

What it’s got to do with me is that you (and other antagonistic posters like you) are the reason that myself and I’d imagine, many others don’t post as often as they used to, thus making the blog a more boring place to visit.

Just let it go, move on and forget about it. If you get this pent up about internet disputes you’ll just make yourself miserable man.

Obnoxious? Me? Never…well maybe a little bit. I’m beginning to mellow now. If that makes me boring then so be it 😉

You’re right about this summer being massive, what with all the contracts that are expiring and the many others in the shop window. I can’t see Mikey making the 5+ signings we’ll need to keep our heads above water. Could be a rough ride next season.

    Are we ready for it?

  • 77 manxpie // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:39 PM

    ha ha ha

  • 78 welshgeordie9 // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:40 PM

    Answer that Ciaran and

  • 79 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:40 PM

And you’ll remember me saying to him that that was bad form. You’ve both done wrong, just get over it man! He didn’t s**g your mother so why let that stupid comment bother you man!

  • 80 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:41 PM

    @ Ciaran

    HBA stats:

    Played 23 (many as sub)

    Goals 3

    Assists 3

    Shots 44

    Games 27

    Goals 6

    Assists 3

    Shots 40

Gouffran has 3 more goals which is expected since he is a striker but other than that they are pretty similar although Yoan has had more playing time .

  • 81 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:41 PM

Don’t bother trying to start on me – while you operate on the “My dad is harder than your dad” level, I operate on quite a different one. I like a good internet dispute, but only with equals so put that particular grudge match to bed before you hurt yourself.

  • 82 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:43 PM

Yet somehow Gouffran escapes any form of criticism .

    I wonder why ? .

  • 83 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:43 PM

So what you’re saying is that Gouffran has scored more and assisted more despite him playing out of position than HBA has done while playing in his favoured position?

How does that advance your argument? If anything it proves what I have said – Gouffran is more effective than HBA.

Thanks for doing the spade work though.

  • 84 blacknwhite yorkshireman // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:44 PM

It cracks me up how HBA can come back from the wilderness, set up the winner and yet still get slated for a shot over the bar and the odd loss of possession. He came on to change the game and did just that. Not for the first time he did what none of our other players show the capability of doing despite having a lot less time on the pitch. We should be grateful to have a player like him in amongst a very mediocre squad and I for one will be disappointed when he leaves

  • 85 manxpie // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:44 PM

    nah i was messin ruddy
i like the more mellow you

i personally think we’ll buy 3 players that might look good but there still unproven in this league but still cum up way short of wat we need and maybe not a relegation scrap but certainly a mid table 1

we need to spend at least 40 mil or at least 5 or 6 scouted players for less full stop really

  • 86 Thump // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:45 PM

Was on a course all day: how was the game? I imagine it was the same as the Fulham game, only we got very lucky.

  • 87 Transfer Sage // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:46 PM

How could anyone not have enjoyed today’s game? It was great.

End to end, both teams making some chances, cisse had a cuple good chances he should have scored, de jong should have got one and we ended up snatching a last minute winner to raise the roof…..not total football but a cracking game that had you on the edge of your seat (for good and bad reasons).

  • 88 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:48 PM

How many games does he change for the better though? very often he comes on and is even worse than what we’ve had on before. He’s a talented boy, no doubt, but he doesn’t half do what most people think he does, he simply gets afforded more leniency because the rest of our squad is so poor.

That doesn’t make him a great player, it just makes him a more talented player in comparison to our pish poor squad.

I don’t think we’ll miss him when he is gone because he does very little as it is. Compare him to Pedro and he falls way WAY short.

  • 89 BarnoldswickMag // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:48 PM

    Transfer Sage
im with you on that 🙂

  • 90 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:48 PM

Against a relegation threatened side at home. Forgive me if I don’t jump for joy.

  • 91 Transfer Sage // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:48 PM

    Ciaran, Manx, et al

I think Ashley has shown prem league survival is priority, his one and only goal set in stone. (just my take on it).

I think after the danger of last season nearly sending us down, having to sign 5 in the January window and still survive by the skin of our teeth he wont make the same mistake again to risk the huge cash from TV deals.

I personally think we will get 4 in and replace any outgoing members of the first 11 with extra buys and replace squad players with kids….don’t think ashley will risk all the ££££ again to be honest.

That doesn’t meant to say I think we will kick on and improve, just do everything we can to maintain where we are.

May be wrong, just what I see.

  • 92 blacknwhite yorkshireman // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:49 PM

And I’m not saying he’s some world beater who is worth £25m, far from it as I know he has the odd game where nothing comes off for him which coupled with his work rate makes him abit of a liability, all I’m saying is his treatment compared to some players is shocking, always the scapegoat

  • 93 firebug666 // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:49 PM

to be fare mate Gouffran works his socks off every game, he plays on the left wing, but is also expected to cover the LB position and score goals, you see him winning the ball back in CM, and for the whole time he is on the pitch he is running. He took a couple of knocks today, and run them off. He is one of the hardest workers in the team, and even when he is having a poor game he still gives everything he has.

  • 94 Transfer Sage // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:50 PM

True, but palace are doing quite well at the minute for them and are pretty solid in defense, they don’t give much away and are hard to beat.

We were missing our two best players in remy and debuchy, both attacking threats as well so I personally think a cleean sheet and a goal is alright for a team in our kind of form.

  • 95 manxpie // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:51 PM

yorkie i don’t think anyones saying that

there saying he should be doing wat he did today on a much more consistant basis
and when he starts a game it just doesn’t happen

look at hazard he creates all game
    or silva the same

arfa could be as good as them if he had the effort and work rate thats our problem

  • 96 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:51 PM

    @ Ciaran

    Simple question:

Would we have won today if it weren’t for HBA ? .

If you say no to that then you clearly have a issue with HBA as a person as he is the only player other than Marveaux that has the creativity (or balls) to get us 3 points without Remy .

Also as I pointed out many of HBA’s appearances this season have been from the bench so he has had less playing time (minutes wise).

My main point is, why does Ben Arfa get hate for actually trying to win games for us ?

  • 97 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:52 PM

4 additions coupled with the replacements for Gosling, Shola, Remy, De Jong and possible departure of players like Colo, HBA et al?

Being a bit ambitious aren’t we? Not a chance he will sign upwards of 5 players. No way. No how.

  • 98 Transfer Sage // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:52 PM

I think it’s because it’s clear HBA has a lot of talent, just doesn’t use it and seems to always be overweight this season, guessing he doesn’t work hard on his fitness rehad after injury (just a guess).

He did create a good chance but so did sissoko and de jong but cisse missed those two sitters, just he converted HBA’s chance.

Not saying he was our worst player today, just I’m not convinced he is a player we can carry during his off days (he doesn’t produce enough goals and assists to carry, if that makes sense?)

  • 99 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:53 PM

As for being pleased with a 93rd min winner against an injury hit side travelling up from London?

Far be it of me to think that those types of teams should be cannon fodder for a side like NUFC. Perhaps I am guilty of the ambition that scourged the pre-Ashley era…

  • 100 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:54 PM

I don’t know how many times I have to say this but I have nothing against Gouffran and actually think he is the best fit striker we have at the moment .

I just think he is wasted on the wing and I would play him through the middle .

  • 101 Transfer Sage // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:55 PM

I think we will get 4 (wide man, 2 strikers and a centre mid to create). Replacing cabaye at last, remy, de jong and just need a wide man.

I think as far as the others go we will get only replacements for Colo out of them…..the rest will be replaced by kids returning from loan like abeid and campbell i think (not saying it’s the right thing to do though).

  • 102 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:56 PM

I don’t hate the man, I just don’t give him added credit for being tricky with the ball when he actually does f**k all with it. It’s the same reason I wish Santon would stop doing his pathetic little step-overs and actually learn how to defend instead of looking like a knob every single time he lines out at LB.

Flair players are great if they actually create chances for the team. Silva is a perfect example. Ultimate team player who lives for creating chances for his team mates. HBA is the antithesis of this.

We wouldn’t have won the game without his assist today. Granted. All I am asking is should 1 assist make me change my mind about him?

I don’t like the guy as a player because he creates next to nothing and never scores. He has been here 3 years man!

  • 103 Transfer Sage // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:57 PM

I see your point on palace but they don’t ship a lot of goals, nobody hammers them, they only lost 1-0 at man city, they are resolute.

I think with our own problems it’s not bad today, happy with it.

In the grand scheme of things, as in should we have the squad capable of battering them, then that’s a different issue entirely, I think we should have a much stronger depth of squad.

  • 105 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:58 PM

In that sense we aren’t getting 4 additions – merely replacing De Jong Remy and possibly signing 2 wide men – with the slight chance of replacing Colo if he goes.

So we’re signing 2 replacements and 3 additions.

Is that enough to prevent a relegation battle?

  • 106 manxpie // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:58 PM

firebug at 93 great post and exactly why imo he is a fantastic player for this club

he does the basics 100% but also adds to the team
where as arfa does the basics maybe if he’s in the mood 50%
an sometimes works for the team maybe 20%?
scores a wonder goal out of his shots 1.5 %

  • 107 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 8:59 PM

  • 108 manxpie // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:01 PM

welsh i think you’ll find that was banter between us two
but hey wat were you saying about sticking your nose in?

  • 109 Transfer Sage // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:01 PM

I think so. I think we are very safe from it this year, so by replacing cabaye and remy, then also getting in somebody to replace de jong (who obviously wasn’t here at the start of the season) and a wide man then it’s still making us stronger.

Also with others, if we replace players that leave we will be fine.

I know it’s a big if, but i personally don’t think Ashley will gamble with that big money. I don’t think he will spend fortunes, but do enough to keep us in the league and in profit.

  • 110 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:01 PM

I’m not going to be pleased that we beat a relegation threatened side 1-0 at home! Ever! No matter whether they concede a lot of goals or not.

They are a poor side and they didn’t even have their strongest team out against us. Arguably, they even created better chances than us.

It’s an OK result, not a good result.

  • 111 welshgeordie9 // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:02 PM

Well I have rest my case, but it’s over I won’t mention them again from now it will be football an nothing else

    Clean slate

  • 112 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:03 PM

OK, perhaps he will make these signings. But will he make them in the summer?

He has form for protecting his investment in January. Why spend bigger when you can nab players whose contracts are running down in January?

I think we’ll have a thin squad to start the season with Jan recruits if we are struggling.

  • 113 Transfer Sage // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:03 PM

Well I think any win is a good result, points are much more important than performances for a team…maybe we want to see more, but a win is always good in my book.

It’s unrealistic to expect us to put 3/4/5 past them when much bigger teams with much better players don’t.

  • 114 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:03 PM

I just don’t see how anyone can watch the last few games without Remy and not want HBA on the pitch, I really don’t .

Just get us a decent manager and play :

  • 115 manxpie // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:03 PM

bpc but who else have we got for the left wing?

    go on name them?
seriously and remember they’ve gotta do a better job the goof?

  • 116 welshgeordie9 // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:04 PM

    Like I said clean slate

    Belfast mentioned my name

    But I will move on

  • 117 Transfer Sage // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:04 PM

I dn’t think he will wait to january again, he did that last year, spend 18 mil (or 30 as they claim) and still almost go down….that’s way too much of a gamble…he spent the money and almost got the tragedy of relegation.

I think we will sign enough in the summer to keep us top 10, nothing more, nothing less.

But you may well be right, it’s just a waiting game to see what happens as per usual

  • 118 welshgeordie9 // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:05 PM

From now on I will behave

  • 119 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:06 PM

So now you’re saying that the only reason HBA should be playing is because the rest of our squad is shite? That’s a far cry from claiming it’s because he is a cracking player.

Granted. HBA should be playing, but that doesn’t mean I will worship the ground he walks on simply because he does what he is paid to do – more often than not he just looks like a lazy sod who is doing naff all in my book. Give me Gouffran every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

3 points is always nice, but your original point was that you couldn’t understand why anyone would not enjoy that result to which I gave you some glaringly obvious reasons why someone would not have thought it the entertaining spectacle you thought it was.

  • 120 firebug666 // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:07 PM

Without the addition of at least 2 strikers a creative midfielder and a couple of wingers we will struggle next season.

I posted earlier that if we had started this season with the team we have now we would be hovering around relegation. The team needs some serious strengthening, and more consistency or we will have the derby games back in 2015, in the championship.

  • 124 Transfer Sage // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:08 PM

fair enough, but i just think it was end to end, we made 3/4 very good chances and grabbed a late/dramatic winner….overall a good 90 mins entertainment for me, all kinds of emotions throughout the game.

  • 125 JP...from The Rock // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:08 PM

How can people call Ben Arfa selfish when he only had one shot on goal and attempted to dribble past a couple of players once? All the other times he was creating space for himself to make a pass or passing it.

Some people have to open their eyes and forget his lazy performances in the past. Today thanks to him we looked that bit more dangerous to the opposition and it was his final ball that made all the difference in the end!

Ones we should sell are Marveaux and Obertan! Those two are bloody useless. Marveaux has the edge over Obertan but way too often goes missing in games. HBA on the other hand is always causing the opposition problems even if he’s having an off day.

  • 126 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:09 PM

I go into every transfer window expecting nothing – that way I will not be disappointed. I go into every transfer window with an open mind – this Jan I stated if he signed Grenier and LDJ as well as keeping our best players I would be pleased – and I will go into the summer window stating that if we only let go those whose contracts are expiring, keep the rest and add 3 player to that squad I would see that as slight progress (despite the fact we need at least 5 additions as well as keeping our squad intact)

Somehow I don’t think he views the January model as a mistake – he views it as a method of making transfers.

  • 127 manxpie // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:10 PM

sage i agree they put 9 players behind the ball every time we got the ball which is always hard to break down plus that means they were always ready to break

we tho and our final balls or just easy passes were shocking and thats a big problem for me
great win and 73% possesion proves that but we should have beaten them by more and we need more goal scorers

  • 128 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:11 PM

You assume that people have formed their opinions on HBA based solely on this one game. Are you forgetting about how he has performed for the last 3 years?

  • 129 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:11 PM

    @ Ciaran

I don’t worship him, far from it . He has his flaws but so do most players .

All I am saying is :

    a) He is more talented than the majority of our current squad and should be playing more (especially with Remy injured)

    b) He gets far more criticism than he deserves by many NUFC fans and I am just pointing this out .

  • 130 manxpie // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:12 PM

sage i’ve ignored him all week wen he constantly calls me out plus that guvnor fella maybe the same person!

but enough was enough in my eyes lol

  • 131 Transfer Sage // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:13 PM

I’ll agree with that, I just think it’s not as easy as people think to open teams up when they hang back a lot.

I’d like to see more getting into the box, like we did against hull the other week as when you have an extra man or two in the box even a bad cross can then work in your favour.

  • 132 Transfer Sage // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:15 PM

I don’t hope for much, or even expect it….just thinking he might not want to gamble that much again.

I guess we need to wait and see really…i know it’s what we end up saying every window but as long as ashley is here we just do need to wait as there seems to be no clear plan.

  • 133 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:16 PM

Maybe he gets more criticism because he is more talented than the rest of the squad yet he provides much much less than the majority of them.

I will always praise Gouffran because he is not massively talented yet he works harder, scores more, and assists more than HBA has EVER done.

HBA is easily the most talented player in our team and as such should be showing on a weekly basis what he can do, but he doesn’t.

Why should I defend a talented player who can’t be bothered to show why he is our best player?

  • 134 manxpie // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:17 PM

bpc aye but is he really the answer now?
    plus hes been injured

that is our problem in my eyes

but no out n out wingers

  • 135 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:17 PM

I will never ‘wait and see’ I plan for the worst. That way I am prepared when the worst happens, and pleasantly surprised if something better happens (something better never happens)

‘Wait and see’ time is over.

  • 136 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:17 PM

There is another quote I hear all the time about Marveaux:

    “he goes missing in games”

How is the guy meant to build up any kind of momentum for the CAM role when he barely plays FFS ? .

It amazes me that Marv last year got more assists than Cabaye (a God amongst men) yet can’t get a look in now when every man and their dog knows we are struggling to score and create chances .

    Its not rocket science .

I bet Swansea would kill to have Marv & HBA in their side as they know how to use players like that . Just look at someone who apparently wasn’t good enough for NUFC but looks great for Swansea .

IMO we should go for Marko Marin in the summer, great player.

  • 137 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:19 PM

    Routledge .

  • 138 Transfer Sage // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:19 PM

I agree wait and see is an annoying approach but as long as ashley remains here there is little we can do, we can’t change the transfer policy, you continue to protest which is good but ultimately until you achieve the end goal we will just have to wait.

  • 139 manxpie // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:21 PM

sage aye that was a problem today we only ever had at most 2 in the box (apart from corners ofcourse lol)

  • 140 JP...from The Rock // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:22 PM

Ciarian – No I am not assuming that! Just read my comment properly; “Some people have to open their eyes and forget his lazy performances in the past”.

Yes he hasn’t been at his best for a long time but when has he ever had a proper run in the team? He’s had serious injuries and fitness issues limiting his appearances and he only comes off the bench in the last 10 or 15 minutes with Pardew urging him to be selfish and score a goal or make something happen.

That is just encouraging him to play selfishly and create something out of nothing.

If Ben Arfa were given a proper run in the team or more than the odd 15 min here and there I bet he would play more like a team player. He showed that today when he had that little bit extra minutes to pass the ball around to open the opposition up. I lost count the amount of times he passed it to Anita only for Anita to have no clue how to use the ball effectively.

Whether you love him or loath him, Ben Arfa is our only proper creative midfielder that oozes class above all his team mates. We need him. We sell him and what are we left with? Obetan? Marveaux? Please lol

  • 141 Transfer Sage // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:22 PM

anyway i’m off out for a few beers, nice catch up guys.

  • 142 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:22 PM

Marv got more assists than Cabaye – mainly because he played the CAM role and Cabaye played much much deeper – apples and oranges lad. I hope you’re not implying that Marv is on the same level as Cabaye because he is not. Cabaye could tackle, track back, pass a ball, strike a free-kick and score goals. What exactly does Marv do?

A better manager would get more out of HBA and Marv, but that does not automatically mean that they are good players.

Marv and HBA should get more playing time, but their laziness is what is stopping them. They are in control of their own destiny and are doing nothing about it. What does that tell you about these 2 players?

  • 143 Toon Tang // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:24 PM

saurez only 3 goals off taking smokey’s record of 31 goals in a 38 game season.

Also as I was looking through my data and records and Andy cole and Alan shearer are all over various goalscoring records. Can you imagine if we’d had had both them lads firing at once…

    That and a decent defense

  • 144 toonking // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:24 PM

that more reason why i want HBA to come off the bench. The thing with starting HBA is if he has the bad day we are left with not much else except sammy.

however if gouffran or sammy started and HBA was on the bench well we still have a sub who might change the game round when we looking poor, also next season he will be leaving so why do we want to fit him and marvo into the team when they are both going to be away.

atleast gouffran sissoko and sammy will still be with us so therefore when we loose our main winger to an injury next year (if we get 2) then atleast we know their is players who although not expert will still be able to cover for the main wingers.

“im concerned with his assists and goals. He needs to produce for us.
don’t confuse that i have a problem with his work rate because if he’s getting goals n assists that balances its self out!
but if he isn’t, then it aint balancing up”

thats a very very fair and right statement and sums up why he should or shouldn’t start!

  • 147 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:25 PM

What makes him a class above the rest? The things he has done for us, or the things we know he can do for us?

If we are basing it on things he has done in the past then I am afraid the negative performances far outweigh the positive performances. Until he can add consistency to his game, shed some of the weight and prove he deserves to start then I am happy to see him sit on the bench.

  • 148 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:27 PM

No, of course I am not saying he is as good as Cabaye, but can anyone argue he is not the closest thing we have to Yohan at the moment ? .

I just want them to have a fair crack of the whip . We are safe from relegation and are nailed on for 8th or 9th so what harm would it do playing Marveaux as CAM and HBA for the rest of the season ? .

  • 150 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:29 PM

Absolutely no harm in that whatsoever. In fact, I was making this point a week or so ago.

HBA should be starting, as should Marv. That way they can either prove their worth to the team, or be shown up as not good enough.

  • 151 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:30 PM

However, if it was suggested that either of these 2 players should be starting in front of Yoan Gouffran I would say ‘not on your life’ – Gouffran has earned his place in the starting line-up.

  • 152 70TWO // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:31 PM

Not discussing the pros’ & cons’ of individuals (another time perhaps) did any one else notice that the tactical change to address the lack of central creativity seemed to be that Gouffran played between the DM and strikers?

Played right in to CP game plan, they snuffed out through pases, more often than not turn us over just inside our own half, were through on to goal with ease and a better team (ie. Everton) would have spanked us.

Could have really done with someone out wide on the left as they doubled up on Sissoko, still covered the two forwards and made us look ineffectual with three in the middle.

BTW very relieved at the win and really felt for Cisse at the end, it looks like he needed games to get back on track. Would still do without him next season mind and ‘follow the ball’ HBA.

  • 153 toonking // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:31 PM

bandb did you catch me question earlier?

  • 158 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:36 PM

    @ Ciaran

That’s why I would play Gouffran as the central striker as I think he is our second best striker behind Remy .

    @ King

You are totally missing the point I was making . Technical players can do well in the PL they just need the right manager or system to get their full potential .

  • 159 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:37 PM

Also I find it hard that one can claim to be ‘correct’ about an issue as subjective as player performance. Surely a football blog is about as subjective an arena that one can enter into, therefore pulling someone up on trying to be ‘correct about everything’ is a little bit off the mark.

  • 161 BandB // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:42 PM

  • 162 Ciaran // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:43 PM

Perhaps it would be more fitting for me to say I would ‘wait and see’ whether HBA will come good or not? Or that I will ‘wait and see’ whether Pardew will suddenly become the world class coach he thinks himself to be or that I should ‘wait and see’ whether Ashley has the intentions of making us a top 6 side?

Anyway, something for me to ponder no doubt. I am off for this evening folks. Have a good ‘un

Yes, he does deserve to start/play a role in our next game based on his contribution today. However, you seem to miss the fact that the reason he is not playing is because he has both performed poorly in many games (came off the bench against Spurs and was even worse than what we had on) and he is also dreadfully out of shape.

What is so special about HBA that means he should start ahead of Gouffran who is statistically proven to be more effective than him?

Suggested team AP will select to play Everton:

    —————– Cisse
    Marveaux – Gouffran – Sissoko
    ———- Tiote ——- Anita
    Dummett – Colo – Willo – Mbiwa

unless Santon is fit… The 442 is not really working, which is probably the best formation to get anything from Cisse, so as Gouffran is a ‘false’ striker he should be able to play as strike partner and also the deep lying role. Creating room for a left footer on the left wing (will never happen!)

PS It’s spelt “Ciaran” – I tend to get a bit pedantic about how my name is spelt. My mother gave it to me so I’m a bit protective over it 😛

Need a big clear out and then show some ambition in the summer:

    Pardew out, Laudrup in.

    Sign from the following:
    M. Richards – replace colo
Morrison – replace cabaye, lad is class
Hughes – if Derby don’t go up
Ince – think he will come good in the prem
    Bolasie – see above
A.Johnson – if scum go down
Hernandez – gonna leave Utd, why not!
Ba – gonna leave chelsea, why not!

Now I would say that was to reduce things to something a bit less complex than is the actual truth. Which I’m sure you know. So rather than try and unpick what seems a rather facetious proposition, I’ll just let it stand as a rhetorical question. If you don’t mind.

the consistancy of a player has got nothing to do with who is the clubs manager.
on his good days he has been excellent but on his awful days he has been just that awful.

    A. because all he does is try showing himself off and all them decision can’t be changed by the manager because he is not the man who has HBAs mind only HBA can choose what to do.

    Big Pappa Cissé @114

That was how the season started, remember Cisse who relies on service flanked by the two most individualistic players in the team and Sissoko/Tiote/Anita not being able to cope in middfield?

    Plus…Where is Sammy?
