We Are Looking For Somebody To Score Goals

9:45 am, Saturday, March 22nd, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 89 Comments

Papiss Cisse has appeared 21 times this season for Newcastle with three goals, and on-loan striker Luuk de Jong so far has six appearances with no goals for the Magpies, so our two strikers today against Crystal Palace have just three goals between them in 27 total appearances.

papiss cisse stoke penalty

Papiss Cisse – scoring penalty against Stoke

So that tells us that both strikers are due some goals, and maybe Newcastle can prove today that they can still score goals without Loic Remy or Yohan Cabaye in the side.

Certainly that is what Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is hoping for, as he had this to say in the Chronicle today:

“We are struggling to score goals without Loic Remy, especially since Yohan Cabaye left as well.” “It really is a process where we are looking for somebody to step up and get the goals.”

“There will be no Loic this weekend, so we really need Papiss, Hatem, Luuk and Yoan Gouffran to come up with the goals.” “We are definitely not a one-man team, but he has given us a little bit of a spark.”

“That is what was missing at Fulham, that spark, and we need it to come from other areas.” “We have real flair in the squad. “When we were on the terrific run, some of our flair players were not involved so much, like Sylvain Marveaux and Ben Arfa, but now might be an opportunity for them.”

As we mentioned yesterday Palace have scored only 19 goals in 29 games in the league this season, so it could be that we need only a single goal today to capture all three points, and we couldn’t care how we score, as long as we can get the win today.

It would be good if Luuk or Papiss or Yoan or Hatem or Moussa can score, but we’d take an own goal today to get all three points.

Of course we’d like to see a good performance from the lads, but a win is what we really need this afternoon to ignite the season, and stop it from petering out and becoming meaningless.

And we still have 27 points to play for, after all.

‘…. from long range.’ Should be added to the title.

Pardew and Pulis – If Carlsberg didn’t do managers.

…yeah it is a shame the club don’t seem to monitor their player’s fitness and put them in a spiral decline when it comes to their development!

…whether it is senior or youth players!

  • 4 Black and White with an army lol // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:56 AM

Cisse shouldn’t even be on the bench today, have Gouffran up top for a change with young Armstrong or LDJ beside him my starting lineup that will never happen—

    Santon, Willo, MYM, Haidara
    Sissoko, Anita, Tiote, HBA
    LDJ/Arm, Gouffran

    MYM, Willo, Collo, Dummet
    Sissoko, Anita, Tiote, Gouffran
    Cisse, Shola/LDJ

    you’s vote

  • 5 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Mar 22, 2014 at 9:57 AM

    Someone mentioned Armstrong
i don’t think he will be involved as he is in the England Under 17 squad that are playing in a tournament in the Czech Republic starting 25th march

  • 6 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 22, 2014 at 10:00 AM

    Oh aye forgot about that!!!

  • 7 Average_Contents // Mar 22, 2014 at 10:02 AM

I get what your saying, he should as a professional footballer be able to maintain his fitness levels but who at the club is monitoring these players? Who let’s them fcuk off back home on a whim then says they ain’t fit enough? Surely part and parcel of bring a manager is to bring discipline and confidence to someone like benny who has struggled throughout his career?

  • 8 funguswatty // Mar 22, 2014 at 10:08 AM

Sissoko in the middle like he was at hull and he got his brace abd he will score or set up some one else

  • 9 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Mar 22, 2014 at 10:08 AM

You don’t loose all fitness just because you are away 6 days!

…not the first time we have had fitness problems with our players, but I forgot who we blame here at the club (at least on this blog)

  • 10 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 22, 2014 at 10:09 AM

I agree they shouldn’t be allowed to go home when injured, but Benny wasn’t injured and his fitness hasn’t been right all season

Now this can be blamed on Pardew, the coaching staff, the fitness coaches, the dieticians, HBA himself
It doesn’t really matter , his days here are numbered and his potential has never been reached, he had a rep as one of the most exciting young players in Europe, now he’s 27 and the speed the game moves these days I bet you could name 10 players off the top of your head that are 20 or under, even more exciting and with bags more potential

The clubs has let HBA down no doubt but no more than HBA has let the club and himself down

    lauren Robert

    Superb comment.
Pardew v Pulis = the meeting of dinosaurs.

It’s funny when you see Wenger speak and then Pardew, the levels of intelligence between the 2 is scary. WENGER is a highly educated guy and the other a charmless oik.

It’s all well and good Ashley wanting us to be the Arsenal of the North but for that to work you need a Wenger calibre manager not a sacked league 1 coach.

Today we’ll probably get more comments like we got against Cardif at home ” we contained them well” – WTF !!

Attacking team selection, attacking tactics, attacking subs (Not Shola!) should see us beat Palacae at home surely, even without Remy!

  • 12 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Mar 22, 2014 at 10:16 AM

This will most likely just continue with other players…the buck doesn’t stop here!

…we will have a new player to tear apart soon 😉 (maybe at some point we will see where the real problem is)

  • 13 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Mar 22, 2014 at 10:18 AM

    Rotonda…so true!…so true!

    …and it’s sad really 🙁

  • 14 Average_Contents // Mar 22, 2014 at 10:29 AM

Not just when their injured mate its any excuse and there off and allowed to do so! Lost count of the amount of times one of our players aunties cousins dog died and they are so traumatised that they need time off! My opinion of course!

But ultimately what your saying makes sense he certainly hasn’t helped himself but to say get fitter but your only having 15 minutes is a joke, suppose it’s a vicious circle your not playing till your fitter but how to get match fit with no game’s is anyone’s guess coz let’s face it he’s lacking in that department but to expect a wonder goal or assists every match when only getting 15-20 minutes just sums pardew up for me! Clear lack of a way to play and relying on individual pieces of brilliance and if that fails bring on stroller and hoof it!

  • 15 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 22, 2014 at 10:39 AM

I don’t understand why he hasn’t made a couple of 45 minute cameos for the reserves like most players when trying to get match fit?
The whole situation seems to point at the club not being to bothered if he features as they know he’s up for sale in the summer and doubt he has any intention of signing a new contract or wants to be here

  • 16 mag // Mar 22, 2014 at 10:42 AM

This is how we know pardew is useless, when he allows a team like Newcastle United, to operate with no goal threat and this crap has been going on since he took charge of the team. The sooner he gets sacked the better.

  • 17 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 22, 2014 at 10:46 AM

We have no goal threat because our star CF is injured and we flogged our free scoring CM
“One purple player in each position”

  • 18 mag // Mar 22, 2014 at 10:52 AM

@16, that’s stating the bleeding obvious! Read what I wrote again, we are in this predicament because pardew can’t do his job management is about planning ahead not muddling along like he does.

  • 19 Jail for Ashley // Mar 22, 2014 at 10:59 AM

Leon Best must have been just that little bit too purple to remain as back up.

  • 20 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 22, 2014 at 10:59 AM

Plan for what? For having your top scorer sold and not replaced every season?
Got lucky landing Remy on loan, no investment how the hell do you plan and build without replacing players you sell?

  • 21 tequilamag // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:00 AM

yeah Mag, quite correct as pardew has total control of all transfers. He is lucky in that way that he has an owner like MA who indulges him like that

  • 22 guvnor // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:00 AM

Mag the geezer isn’t even allowed in the ground to supervise the players crazy or what? Other teams would get rid like westham Charlton and Southampton did.

  • 23 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:02 AM

Aye and i imagine the £3 odd million had the pound signs spinning in his eyes!
Doubt he even looked at the squad when he banked that cheque

  • 24 jazzyp // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:06 AM

Well im gonna start the ball rolling and predict a 3-0 win to the toon, And at last Ldj to break his duck with a brace.
Remy is off to arsenal with the sound of things,Sholla put to pasture and Cisse more or less is going to be sold so that leaves us desperate for a Cf…………so I would hope that by Pardew’s admission of the ball is rolling in the transfer department holds some ground

  • 25 mag // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:17 AM

You seem very naive @19 pardew must be very happy with the situation at Newcastle, the way he spins the propaganda at every press conference. He knows exactly who and what is going to be sold make no bones about that.

  • 26 Jail for Ashley // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:18 AM

Well I’m going to the game today and hopefully break my jinx as the other three times and a trip to Goodison have seen us lose, so you know who to blame if we get turned over.

  • 27 Rotonda heights // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:19 AM

Charlton, west ham and Southampton weren’t stupid enough to give him an 8 year contract.

It’s just very hard to see what there is to look forward to under ashley. We just reak of going absolutely nowhere.

  • 28 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:21 AM

Never said he didn’t know, but can only build with what’s left, which is generally average at best

  • 29 Jail for Ashley // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:22 AM

Pardew has to be complicit in the whole affair otherwise he would have walked, I don’t believe for one minute the gambling debt theory.

I wonder how close we were to not getting Remy over the line. If we hadn’t, and seeing as we haven’t scored a solitary premiership goal in his absence, I wonder where we might be? Would relegated be too much of a stretch.

tads – when the land stories first appeared on here a couple of months ago -I think there were two plots mentioned -the land around the Strawberry and the old Magpie club in Pitt Street.
The Pitt Street property has been sold to a Manchester outfit who are going to build student accommodation. They have had their planning permission agreed by the council and start building next month.

  • 34 Rotonda heights // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:31 AM

surely we have better squads than sunderland and fulham!!

  • 35 mag // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:33 AM

It doesn’t take much working out to realise Pardew isn’t up to advancing beyond mid table mediocrity and he seems resigned to his limitations as he never offers any other options. Someone’s past is usually a good indication of what their capable of achieving, Moyes and Pulis are of the same mould as pardew.

  • 36 jazzyp // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:33 AM

Hey mate how ya doing pal. You know what they say…….Ya gotta to keep ya pecker up mate !!
Personally I think its the end of the line for Benny at Nufc. If he has lost the trust of his team mates then he is a gonna come the summer

  • 37 toon kk // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:34 AM

we would have been in the bottom three without Remy, we have on the whole a below average squad with a few average in and Remy.we had cabaye now he’s gone, so we’ll struggle to Remy is back in the team.

  • 38 jimmysmith // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:36 AM

    Santon- fit? Willo. Collo. Haidarra

    Anita. Tiote

    Sissoko. Benny. Gouffran

    Luuk De Jong

  • 39 Rotonda heights // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:39 AM

why had haidara being getting the pardew treatment? Dummet was absolutely shocking on every set play

  • 40 toon kk // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:45 AM

how much further up the table do you think a different manager would get our current squad
Expecially with Remy missing, we’re not the same team without him.
We’re above mid table which is good for the players we have. Mash will have to spend to get us higher which we know he doesn’t like doing.

  • 41 Rotonda heights // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:47 AM

It’s tragic that with all his wealth Ashley has chosen to only employ his drinking buddies in key positions . That’s fine if you’re a conference side and just playing at it but with 50000 home fans Ashley just doesn’t give a rats.

Every manager fails at some point but not so regularly as Pardew and with Laudrup, AVB, Di Matteo, the Burnley guy, even Hoddle etc out there, at least with any of them we would see some attractive football played on a regular basis and a desire to win every match with attacking flair.

  • 42 Jail for Ashley // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:49 AM

Never mind how many leave in the summer, we’ll buy two players and a couple of loanees and we’ll be re assessedIin January, if we are doing well Tiote will be sold.

  • 43 BandB // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:50 AM

Stories like the Ben Arfa one doing the rounds don’t just “leak”. I wonder who the senior players who turned on him were? My guess is that it might be the back of the Chronicle brigade….the “we’ll do it for the team” loyalists who still agree to be trotted out to spout rubbish. In short, the ones who in any normal world would be expecting to be shown the door themselves. Whether you rate him or not, Ben Arfa has been very carefully scapegoated, making him very easy to sell without too much complaint. Just as a bit of lustre was slyly chipped off Cabaye before he went.

  • 44 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:50 AM

    Mister Tuff
Can you remember if those properties were sold through NUFC of transferred through the club to MASH holdings before being sold? Does any profit go directly to the club of directly to MASH holdings?

  • 45 Mister Tuff // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:51 AM

The Remy story is grating on me a bit -bit disrespectful to say the least. I read the story first on Mr Tubbs website. According to my Toon news aggregator they broke the story first.
Now then – this outfit are not really known for news scoops. If a member of the public had spotted this -recognised all parties -maybe taken a snap -I’m sure the story would have been sold to the Sun or the Mirror. But the story is broken by Mr Tubbs outfit. I’m going to suggest a bit of inside knowledge here or foul play by the Toon – along the lines they knew of the approach and leaked the story so Toon fans do not go bonkers in the summer when he quits SJP. A conspiracy theory -well yes -but with all the mis-information by the Toon nowadays -I think it’s eminently believable.
Debuchy has probably been sorting out his escape as well -during his “injury time off”.

  • 46 Rotonda heights // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:53 AM

    Toon KK

Pardew has systematically aliented, arrested and halted the progress and development of Ben Arfa, Marveaux, Cisse, MYM and Haidara just for starters.

These weren’t all bad players before.

A good manager would have worked with and enhanced these players and worked to their strengths, not work against them. It’s hardly just with us either, look at Tevez and Mascherano etc, etc.

  • 47 Jail for Ashley // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:53 AM

What makes you think that the above would be prepared to be complicit in Mashleys lies for 450K a year.

  • 48 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:53 AM

I agree and have no doubt at all that the club are working on deals

I fully expect deals to be lined up for Krul Yanga Debuchy HBA Santon and many others for the summer! 😉

  • 49 tequilamag // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:54 AM

BandB interesting theory but why would MA leak a story that that would devalue an already diminishing asset?

  • 50 FrankfurtMag // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:55 AM

Benny will be like a new signing…….

  • 51 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:57 AM

    May we’ll be the case
However not overly bothered about who he does or doesn’t get on with, but for me the club haven’t done enough to unlock his full potential and he hasn’t done enough or given enough to reach his potential

  • 52 Mister Tuff // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:57 AM

tads not sure who exactly owned what. Ref the Pitt Street property -details of the planning application were on the blog -I had a look at the application but I do not think the owner of the property was nominated just the outfit who were applying. There was a reference to Storeys’ though.

  • 53 Jail for Ashley // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:58 AM

    Mister Tuff,
Who can blame you for giving conspiracy theories credibility when Mashers has a team in place to create mis information, Goebels would be proud of their efforts.
When the story first broke it was said that the property had been transfered in to MASHLEY holdings.

  • 54 Rotonda heights // Mar 22, 2014 at 11:58 AM

  • 57 Greebol1892 // Mar 22, 2014 at 12:00 PM

If we score/win it will be down to individual brilliance. We are shite at home because the counter-attacking tactics DON’T WORK and we can expect the usual crap 1st half then frantic last 10 minutes of long punts because we’re 0-0 or a goal down.
I just hope we play 2 up front! HTL!

  • 58 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 22, 2014 at 12:01 PM

  • 60 BandB // Mar 22, 2014 at 12:05 PM

Tequila. Ben Arfa is a purple who is surplus to requirements (sic). It is likely to be a bloodbath of a summer, and discounting Ben Arfa’s in advance is a strategy that probably offsets any downgrading of the player’s actual value. As a piece of spin (of which I have some experience) I would say it is the fans are being managed here. Cabaye came in for quite a lot of friendly fire before he left. A lot of fans were mollified, and they still got their price for him.

  • 61 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Mar 22, 2014 at 12:06 PM

Actually Laudrup was on less at Swansea!

…how do we know how much Ashley is willing to pay for a manager? Maybe Pardew just come cheap in all aspects?

  • 62 BandB // Mar 22, 2014 at 12:15 PM

It will be interesting to see whether he thrives under different management. And it is that question as to whether his potential is unlockable that suppresses his value, which hasn’t fallen THAT far, because, for the same reason, it was never that high.
Are you intending to brave the match-time blog today? I might. It always makes me feel like a paragon of uncomplaining loyalty.

  • 63 MosesNUFC // Mar 22, 2014 at 12:17 PM

I also had a dream my old mate Alnwick got a game today, so I expect an injury to Krul.

  • 65 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 22, 2014 at 12:55 PM

True will be interesting as in all fairness he should be at the peak of his career, and sadly for what ever reason that peak isn’t where we all thought it would be!
He certainly splits opinion that’s for sure!
Will be interesting to see where, if he does leave, he goes
Do you think it will be another PL club?
Can’t see it being say a German or top Spanish club, they seem to sign either superstars or concentrate on promoting youth
Can’t see it being a Chelsea or Liverpool, maybe spurs? I have a feeling it will be a Serie A club

Usually can’t help but get involved in the match day blog lol!

  • 66 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 22, 2014 at 12:58 PM

Pardew has said Benny won’t start today

“He’s not ready to play and start this game but he will be on the bench on Saturday. He needs a good finish to the season and he’s aware of that for a number of reasons.”

Could be a bluff mind but he’s said he’s missed training most the week

  • 70 Ancientcoptic // Mar 22, 2014 at 1:20 PM

We should be beating Palace, but I am not expecting much of an exhibition of football.

What are the chances our coaching staff have done these things:

    1. Tell defenders not to hoof the ball up the pitch.

    2. Instruct certain players not to shoot from stupid distances.

    3. Pass the ball out from corners.

    4. LDJ informed not to shoot unless he is inside the box, as he has about the tamest shot ever seen in a striker at this level.

    5. Krul encouraged to calm down and clear his lines in a more commanding fashion.

  • 71 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 22, 2014 at 1:25 PM

Certainly not how Wenger will have wanted to celebrate his 1000th game!
Absolute madness Gibbs getting sent off, Chamberlain actually pleading with the ref that it’s him who should get sent off!
Feel an FA fine coming on for Wenger after this one! Shows how inept some of these Ref’s are though!

Sounds like you were a political agent in a previous incarnation !
Am sure we ‘re being softened up for a Benny discount sale..
Bonfire of the Vanities this summer ?

I’m sure Pardew would want more firepower up front and actually sign more than one quality forward since the departure of AC. Even Cisse came at a bargain price – and now we know why..
You only have to look at ins and outs in the attack department of our little shop of horrors to see that Joke actually made things worse by only going for loan players as we now have zero continuity for next season, Strolla being washed up, and Sammi not having developed fast enough. I can remember Gangsta getting a run out against Chelski a few years back and looking as if he could have been the next Sturridge – but we have failed to sign, develop or retain any decent forward since Pardew has been here – as to whether he gets the blame as he doesn’t actually sign the players, or agree their dodgy contract terms, or coach the development squad – is entirely down to personal bias.

If old pards is so good how come he never won out worth having? I think he tells ash he doesn’t need players so he can look good to the boss like crawlers do. Get french football on twitter are saying Ben arfa is out of the team because all the players want him out of the Toon.

We have an average manager and an average squad the problems far bigger than just the manager

  • 83 guvnor // Mar 22, 2014 at 1:54 PM

Yeah but he makes it look a right old balls up with his football and conduct.

There’s 20 managers in the Prem.
Who would you repalce him with ?
    Would they come to Toon?

The average life expetancy of a Prem manager is less than 1.7 seasons – about 55 games but every new appointment new broom effect lasts three months. The merry go round system doesn’t work. Bet they’ll be a load of Gooners after the head of Wenger on a platter – but would they have done better with anybody else ? – and they’re a better run club than ours

What Ben Arfa is worth in the summer is not half so important to the club as the cost at which he can be “replaced.” He can be undermined in the fans’ eyes without it impacting his actual sale value. The aim here (my best guess) is to create an environment in which a player of Gouffran’s value and wages is seen as an acceptable “replacement” rather than one of, say, Cabella’s.

And that’s not the most pessimistic view possible. The game in the summer will be to sold onto season ticket holders at the least possible expense.
The really ballsy case to make for Pardew and Ashley would be that, not only have they offloaded a workshy luxury player in the shape of Ben Arfa, but they have identified, in Dan Gosling, a better alternative already on our books.

No goals without Remy…. Don’t see who’s going to score today
