Everton took the chances they created tonight in brilliant style, and that was enough to give them a 3-0 win over a Newcastle side that worked hard and never gave up, but we just didn’t have the class of some of the Everton players on display at St. James’ Park tonight, and that was our sixth home league defeat of the season.
Ross Barkley after scoring superb first goal
Everton are a very good side, and they played near their best tonight ,but Newcastle came out of the blocks like a steam train, and in the first couple of minutes of the game we had three chances blocked by the Everton defense.
First it was Luuk de Jong whose left foot shot was deflected high and wide, and from the resulting Paul Dummett corner, Papiss Cisse had his shot kicked off the line and then Yoan Gouffran also had a shot blocked.
Everton started to come into the game after such a strong start from the home side, and after 18 minutes Tim Krul made a great save, as Ross Barkley cut inside and found Romelu Lukaku who turned quickly and shot, and Tim left his leg in the way of the ball to make the save.
After 22 minutes Sissoko burst through and there was a half chance for Cisse in the inside left position, but his shot was deflected for a corner.
Ross Barkley fires home Everton’s first
And from the corner Everton went on a lightning breakaway, and it was Barkley who got to the cleared ball first just outside of his own penalty area, and he raced away from the Newcastle players, and then cut inside from the right and smashed the ball into the back of the net with his left foot, as the Newcastle defenders tried to get back.
It was a great goal from the young 20 year-old England International and you need a lot of skill to be able to score a goal like that.
The goal was evidence of just how quickly Everton can break from the back, and after Newcastle had shown some promise in the first 20 minutes, we were 1-0 down.
On 27 minutes de Jong tried to get past Sylvain Distin, and the Dutchman fell down in the box, but no way was that a penalty.
After 33 minutes the very strong Sissoko played the ball to Vurnon Anita, who did a neat one two with de Jong to set up Papiss Cisse, but Cisse’s shot was blocked by the Everton defenders.
Half time came and it was still 1-0 and Newcastle had played well, but we hadn’t taken maybe two or three difficult chances that had been created – and Everton did.
But Newcastle had shown a lot of energy and determination against a very good looking Everton side in the first 45 minutes.
Tiote hit a terrific shot after 57 minutes that American goalkeeper Tom Howard blocked – and Cheick must be practicing these shots – hes getting a lot better at them, and of course he almost broke the cross-bar on Saturday against Palace.
Ben Arfa came on after 59 minutes for de Jong, and the Dutch striker was again was disappointing in this game, and he seems to be too lightweight for the Premier League.
On 61 minutes a good right wing cross from Vurnon Anita was met on the volley by Yoan Gouffran just outside the penalty area, and his blistering left foot shot was only just over the bar.
Ben Arfa was getting the ball a lot and he was a threat to the Everton defenders, who seemed to know the Frenchman would come straight at them – and he did.
After 75 minutes Sylvain Marveaux came on for Yanga-Mbiwa, as John Carver wanted Newcastle to go all out for a goal, and Newcastle were surging forward, much like we did against Crystal Palace on Saturday. but we needed a goal.
After 78 minutes more great work by Ben Arfa in the penalty area, as he beat three (four?) men and then went along the bye line and put the ball across the goal and then amazingly Anita somehow managed to put the ball wide – it what a sitter – and the Dutchman missed it.
The Dutchmen held his head in his hands, but that was a big miss and a goal at that point was just what Newcastle needed, as the lads were coming at Everton, with Ben Arfa again the danger man.
And with Newcastle piling forward a quick breakaway again caught Newcastle short at the back, and much like the first goal, the Newcastle defenders couldn’t get back and it was Osman who smashed the ball into the back of the net to make it a rather flattering 3-0.
The Newcastle players played with enthusiasm and drive tonight, but we just didn’t have the skill – especially in putting the ball into the back of the net – and the Everton players showed how to do it.
And Everton got their first away win since they beat Swansea in South Wales just before the turn of the year, and they are now 11 points ahead of us with a game in hand.
And with Arsenal drawing 2-2 with Swansea at the Emirates tonight, after being 1-0 down after 72 minutes, Everton are only 6 points behind Arsenal with a game in hand.
It just wasn’t Newcastle’s night tonight.

Honestly can’t call this match
We really don’t have an overly attack minded squad
Tiote and Anita are not really attackers
Goofy and Sissoko on the wings do well but aren’t the biggest threat
De Jong, doing okay as a hold up player but doesn’t look a big goal threat
Cisse, bagged one, not as optimistic as others that the floodgates will now open!
Mbiwa didn’t look great getting forward on the flank, Dummett looked good at the back but not overly special going forward
Then our bench the only real attacking options are HBA and Marveuax, one struggling with fitness (grew into the palace game mind) and the other hasn’t played regular football for nearly 3 years!!
Then you look at Everton
Seamus Coleman, Playing very well, attacking the flanks and getting in amongst the goals
Sylvain Distin, Dangerous from set pieces
Leighton Baines, huge danger on the flanks deadly from set pieces, and we give a lot free kicks away from 20-25 yards
James McCarthy, gets forward and links the midfield well
Ross Barkley, Very busy player, very quick great with the ball could really be dangerous tonight
Gerard Deulofeu, Lightning quick, not on great form but with Yanga playing out of position he could give him a nightmare Romelu Lukaku, Enough said!
And with Aiden McGeady and Kevin Mirallas to come off the bench there a very very dangerous team
Bit skeptical i know!
Is it sad that NUFC is that predictable and one dimensional?

Comment #44Any one know why HBA and Haidara are parked on the bench while de Jong and Dummet continue to play like a pair of donkeys? Just wandering.
I was hoping some of Sir Bob’s magic may have rubbed off on Carver having been his right hand man for five years. I guess he’s been Pardew’d too.

Comment #47Terrible performance, no creativity no movement. Sideways football or backwards. Dummet and mbwia gave us nothing going forward. No one to bomb on and double up with left/ right midfield. Cisse worked hard, made the runs which no one sees. He is a poacher with no service. Gouffran looked like he was lost tonight. Sissoko great 10 minutes at the start and then influenced nothing. Williamson, championship player, works hard can’t fault his effort simply not good enough. Collo was being pulled all over the place by the movement of Barkley in between the defence and midfield. No influence from the captain.
Team looked more balanced when Ben arfa came on, Anita and Ben arfa on the right gave more of a threat. Season over, play the kids, tell the rest to play for their futures. Give us some ambition please mr Ashley.

Comment #49Manx…I’ll retype it for you if you don’t care to read it:
“Manx…I don’t think you need to spend money each season!
…our problem is we don’t plan ahead and we don’t replace what we loose – we will never get anywhere like that
We think reactive instead of pro-active – and the club talk a good game, but rarely deliver.
Pardew gets both praise and criticism, the thing just is the negative outnumbers the positive!”

“Manx…I don’t think you need to spend money each season!”
“jesper thats a load of rubbish!
so your saying you don’t need to spend when you finish 5th with a very very small squad
or spend for a euro campaign or after a very poor relegation struggle??”
my comments tells you why you should spend and also why we have failed!
also my earlier post showed why other teams who have spent are above us!
its not rocket science
so how about you read the whole situation and respond instead of being lazy and pompous ffs!

Comment #62We controlled a vast part of the game, more passes made and more possession doesn’t happen often against Everton. It just shows how we severely lack creativity, as the decision making in the final third is poor. It also causes problems of getting counter attacked which is happening too much and gifting goals to the opposition!

Comment #65Even with that awful miss Anita was one of our best today. Colo has lost it and wants to go home, Luuk seems afraid of a tackle, Gouffran seems to have forgot how to score, Dummett isn’t ready for that starting spot yet, and we desperately need a creative attacking midfielder. That was just a bad game. And Cisse just keeps smiling, gotta love him!

Comment #71Tiote and Anita = no creativity, passing is sideways. Sissoko is the only player can create from something (apart from HBA)
Dummet = Useless and slow. yes last few games he was OK because against average team.
Cisse = got some improvement but still ………………………………
De Jong = Start to become a bit lazy, maybe the effect of hanging out with SHOLA AMEOBI

Comment #72Manx…if you read further or just read what I write it says:
“our problem is we don’t plan ahead and we don’t replace what we loose – we will never get anywhere like that”
Now when I say you don’t need to spend money every season it it clearly not meant as not replacing what we loose!
…should really go without saying don’t you think?

Comment #73jesper yes and the whole of your comment and the pointless repost because you cant move forward with out investing and we haven’t since we finished 5th!
but in your world that is ok and we have to be pro-active but with out investing
so go on tell us all how that is done?

Comment #79i want to see something new our season is over, we should be using these games to give us a platform for next season. pardew just lacks any imagination his 442 and his mindset are all wrong for this club period.
if i was manager i would be thinking about changing formation to a 4-3-3 an attacking one not a pardew
4-3-3 which is more like a 451
we have 7 games left we should play 4-3-3
every game building for next season, i would have sissoko playing next to tiote for the remaining games i really think he should be playing this position next season, put ben arfa left wing give him a new contract and this position next season
also play haidara he could be gaining vital experience ready for next season put anita/marveaux attacking midfield gouffran/remy right wing cisse/dejong striker thats how it should play out for the last 7 games
as for next season i would like to see a more balanced team bring in cabella him and debuchy on the right get grenier for attacking mid and the team will be taking shape with a good average age

Comment #80Ashley’s total lack of ambition for Newcastle United means that we will never employ a Manager with balls ..like say.. Rafa .
We are not run as a Football club we are run as a financial institution and an advertising outlet for what’s important and takes priority for him ..his sports Direct company.
All of the above is correct ..and when the slow amongst us realise this we might get someplace .. Ashley out.
