Haidara And Ben Arfa Start At Southampton

2:01 pm, Saturday, March 29th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 505 Comments

Alan Pardew has produced a couple of surprises in that he has given a start to Massadio Haidara at left back, and a good move is that Ben Arfa is also in the starting line-up at Southampton today.

hatem ben arfa flying

Ben Arfa – starts today at St. Mary’s

And as half expected Luuk de Jong is relegated to the bench, and so is Paul Dummett after a mediocre performance against Everton in mid-week.

It’s not clear where Ben Arfa will play – maybe as a withdrawn striker or he could be on the wing, and of course he could easily interchange with Yoan Gouffran, who can also play in both positions.

It’s a surprise that Massadio Haidara has been brought in, but the young Frenchman must have been playing well in training, and certainly he deserves his chance, and he’s a very good young player.

And for Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez is fit and starts for the Saints this afternoon.

This is a tough game for the Magpies, and we just hope somebody can get the goals, and we’ll have to start this game very quickly, as Southampton are often out of the blocks very quickly at home.

And only 17% think we can win this game and 65% think we’ll lose – so the lads can shock us on the positive side this afternoon.

And with the Saints being only one point behind Newcastle, we have to hope we can at the very least come away with a draw this afternoon at St. Mary’s.

Now thats more like it. Are we sure Pardew has picked this team like :) .

  • 2 Ginger // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:02 PM

    Good team!

  • 3 niafron // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:05 PM

    Will we see Beny CAM?

  • 4 Ginger // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:05 PM

However, the bench we have is awful!

  • 5 toonbrother // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:06 PM

With colocinni in the starting line up this could end in disaster

  • 6 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:06 PM

BPC…he probably thought he needed someone he could blame the worse happen!

…will also be fuel for some on here 😉

    *should

  • 8 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:08 PM

We don’t have much option in midfield do we?

  • 9 Brutooon // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:11 PM

Dummet is SLOW thats why we lose last match !!!!

might also bring in Santon late in the game for fitness

  • 10 Ancientcoptic // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:11 PM

I do not rate Rickie Lambert based on what I have seen recently, he makes Ameobi look mobile.

If we play long balls out from the back, we are doomed, if we are set up to play, I think we can win this.

The Saints are known for being pegged back after taking the lead, which indicates they start strong and drop off. If they are not ahead within the first 30 minutes, the game should be there for the taking.

Great to see Haidara playing, but why has it taken so long?

  • 11 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:12 PM

How Gosling makes the bench over Marveaux I will never know.

At least Pardew has finally realised Haidara is our best Lb. Only took him the best part of a year like 😉

  • 12 Ibizatoon // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:12 PM

Like the team. Would have perhaps preferred to not have MBiwa at RB, but apart from that I’m happy enough.

Gouffran looked like he needs a rest, but not sure how many options we have with that one.

Lastly, where has Marv disappeared to again?

    Come on Benny…give ’em ‘ell!

  • 13 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:15 PM

This team is perfect for us to sit back and then counter attack with the blistering pace of HBA,Gouff & Sissoko.

This system has worked well for us away from home and I am much more confident now Dummet & De Jong have been dropped .

  • 14 Ibizatoon // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:16 PM

Big Pappa…Confident? Come on, don’t be selfish, share the goods.

  • 15 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:17 PM

What will we do if we need to change the midfield with that bench?

    …bring on Ameobi? 😉

  • 16 Ibizatoon // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:18 PM

Jesper…Maybe, although perhaps an outside chance only, Santon could come in on the wing if needed?

However, we just know Ameobi is getting on that field at some stage. It wouldn’t be right if he didn’t 😉

  • 17 niafron // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:19 PM

I don’t expect an important improvement, but at least we could have some fun otday…

  • 18 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:19 PM

Please don’t sit back that will only mean Benny gas to drop down…I thought we had been trough this :(

…if Benny starts we need to start playing differently. Did you guys read the Rob Lee interview? It should put everything in to perspective!

  • 19 Ibizatoon // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:20 PM

Niafron…We’ve already had a radical suggestion of confidence and now you bring fun in to it?

    Madness :)

    Good to see Haidara starting

  • 21 yo-yo // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:21 PM

On the thickness of football players :

Been following the debate on here on the intelligence of young footballers – btw Pardew did not say that youngsters from middle class backgrounds were better or more valuable players Ruddy – you’ve misinterpreted the quotes there so your insult is way OTT.

Anyway…. tale from the late 70s. I used to work with a lass who, when she started teaching as a young 21 year old was a special needs teacher and had a ‘remedial’ English class of teenagers including Chris Waddle. At that time he could barely write his own name apparently. The other kids in the class used to take the mick and said it didn’t really matter as he was going to be a pro footballer and could always put an X on his contract with Newcastle – it was before he went to the Toon – I think he was with Tow Law at the time.
As it happened he later went to France for big bucks, absorbed the culture although he was homesick and became a very good French speaker – so hardly thick…

  • 22 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:21 PM

Ibiza…do you know if Marv is injured or something cause that bench does look a bit uneven?

  • 23 Ibizatoon // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:22 PM

Jesper…Do you not listen to Pardew? He’s only just got through telling us that neither Mike nor he likes the sit back approach.

Expect more full throttle attacking football today. Not sure how Newcastle will play mind.

  • 24 theartfuldodger // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:22 PM

Atleast cisse makes contact when striking. Benteke against manu has been woeful today.

  • 25 Ibizatoon // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:24 PM

Jesper…Uneven? Ah yes, now that Benny is off of it Sholas side does seem to be sloping somewhat….

No idea on Marveaux. To be honest, whilst you shouldn’t expect miracles in his little cameos, he did pretty much nothing in them to warrant being too close to the team. But then again, who has on that bench?

  • 26 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:26 PM

Nearly got my selection right from yesterd only difference I moved Mbiwa to centre and brought in Santon

  • 27 Ibizatoon // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:28 PM

Charlie…So close there could be good reason to think you’re Pardew himself!

Why didn’t you move MBiwa? :)

  • 28 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:28 PM

The ability to speak or write does not make you intelligent neither does the opposite make you unintelligent!

…if you followed the discussion, maybe you also saw Cyprus and my contribution? :)

  • 29 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:30 PM

  • 31 Ancientcoptic // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:31 PM

Man Utd should be paying Benteke’s wages this week. There is no way he should be playing international football in current form.

  • 32 yo-yo // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:31 PM

    jesper

Being unable to read or write is a serious disadvantage in life for most people, but not always – which was the whole point of the story about Waddle

  • 33 catchy in norway // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:32 PM

isnt pardew responsible for southampton ? dont they still play to his “on the front foot system”

i like hiadara , but i dont get why he is in the team , i dont get why drummet jumped ahead of hiadara in the first place, and i dont see what drummet has done wrong to be dropped,

if i had the choice, HBA would be my no 10, but if that means putting sissoko on the right, then i would rather have HBA as my right winger, at least he can do something out there, sissoko is crap out there, as is goofy out on the left, he is a much better CF

still think we are in for a humping today,

    all hale pardew

  • 34 The next Mike Williamson // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:32 PM

  • 35 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:35 PM

Yo-yo…I got your point, but replied cause you said you had followed the discussion, but only commented on what Ruddy said.

No De Jong in our side, Lambert in their side… it makes a refreshing change for the dumb team selection to be on the other side. (I hope I am not tempting fate saying that)

Sorry, that was pretty poor :)

  • 40 SpaceGhost // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:42 PM

Lovin the Haidara & Benny inclusion. More important question, will we wear the Brazil kit today?

  • 41 yo-yo // Mar 29, 2014 at 2:43 PM

    Jesper –

I did read the other comments but yours was more nuanced so stood as fair comment.

Ruddy seems to be in full insult mode again – both Torq and Welsh. It’s a pity they don’t run Uni courses on how to get on with folk. IMO – and with a few exceptions – it is a better life skill to make friends than enemies. but you’ll know who the exceptions are :)

Just been looking at the games left and we definitely ought to have the aim of of finishing higher than Manure if we have any self respect at all. The home game could be a 6 pointer.
Can’t see Scum getting more than 38 pts with their run in so relegation is looking more likely than not. Catchy’s pal at Cardiff could even finish them off…

Great pressure. Very nice to see how they play.
    Our players are clueless.

Ilovetoon – The despicable thing is, you’re completely correct in saying it’s week in week out. Aside from the odd performance when Remy or Cabaye inspired the rest it’s been beyond woeful. Why are we so poor? Why?

  • 130 Toon1978 // Mar 29, 2014 at 3:32 PM

I feel sorry for Soton. They should be 4 up. NUFC need to get asses into gear.

  • 131 Oleg G // Mar 29, 2014 at 3:32 PM

Elliot with great saves so far but giving them the ball back with those long balls. On the other hand, he cannot trust his defense today so, maybe that is the less of the two bad options.

  • 132 Laurent Robert 32 // Mar 29, 2014 at 3:34 PM

Southampton under MP are by far better to watch than us with ol’ silver tongue in charge. They are fluid, confident and well drilled. We play off the cuff, no real plan off attack and hope something comes off. Dreadful.

  • 133 Oleg G // Mar 29, 2014 at 3:34 PM

And again Elliot gives them back the ball. ufff…
Can we hold on to the ball for some time or what?

  • 134 Ancientcoptic // Mar 29, 2014 at 3:34 PM

OMG MBIWA….Please leave the pitch and catch a taxi home.

  • 140 Oleg G // Mar 29, 2014 at 3:36 PM

Not connected specifically with this game. I would prefer to see 5-10 good, organized attacks a game where player take their time and pass the ball around until they have a real chance instead of seeing 30-40 different fast attacks (if you can call them that) that end with nothing.

  • 141 Toon1978 // Mar 29, 2014 at 3:37 PM

Sissoko can share the taxi home with Mbiwa lol.

  • 142 Ancientcoptic // Mar 29, 2014 at 3:39 PM

Anita, our new CAM… never worry Benny, you lump it out on the wing against Shaw lol.

  • 143 Mike's Iron Curtain // Mar 29, 2014 at 3:40 PM

To be fair to Mbiwa, in himself he hasn’t and again today doesn’t at all look happy about having to play RB – I’m sure his Newcastle career to date isn’t what he had in mind when joining from the French champions.

  • 144 Toon1978 // Mar 29, 2014 at 3:41 PM

  • 152 Oleg G // Mar 29, 2014 at 3:44 PM

Elliot is having a Krul against Spurs day

That was their 4th or 5th really good attempt and probably the best one so far.

Do we even have a game plan?
Or this is it? Just another 45 mins like this in the next half and hope for the best?

  • 153 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 29, 2014 at 3:44 PM

    Ancient
Agree Anita shouldn’t be a number 10 but given the hype around HBA he should be able to deal with a 20 yr old fullback in his break through season

Good line-up today shame about the performance. Gouffran looks knackered. Take him off as he ain’t his normal self.

Half time and not even an attempt at goal from us!! Embarrassing. We are never going to get anywhere playing like this. We look less than an average team without ‘our’ top striker Remy.

Anita is awful in the middle, no presence and keeps losing possession. HBA, Williamson and Eliott are the only ones trying. The rest are just careless with the ball and out of their depth.

Finish above Man U eh Pards ? .

It doesn’t matter how many players or formations we use Pardew is still a shocking manager with no tactical awareness .

That team is more than capable of putting a string of passes together but we just stand still and there is virtually no movement off the ball . How Pardew gets to be a PL manager is beyond me.

  • 198 xiaofeiii // Mar 29, 2014 at 3:52 PM

its either our tactic is lousy or the play is lousy… but I believe it is BOTH.

MYM can never be a right back. He is slow, can’t cross can’t pass.

We are playing three central midfielders who did nothing but crowd in the center and do nothing. We are playing Tiote and Anita as defensive midfielders but refuse to let Ben Afra attack. Its not Cisse lousy.. is there is no midfielders attacking at all! no wonder Sissoko look so good in Newcaste midfielder.

  • 199 Toon Tang // Mar 29, 2014 at 3:52 PM

  • 200 TurkishFan101 // Mar 29, 2014 at 3:52 PM

I wouldnt blame Mbiwa only, whole team is nowhere to be seen apart from Anita and Rob Elliot.

They are only instructed to do on the pitch by Pardew. Ben Arfa is like a Right Wing Back, the defensive players are pushing more than him lol, great one pardew I applaud your stupid tactics again.

Feel so sorry for Cisse, getting no service as usual. The defence is clueless, I dont even know why Colo keeps captain band, he shows no ambition and communication between the back four, give it to Tiote, or even Mbiwa..

We are playing too deep again, 9 players in our own half.

The players are clueless as the coaching team which sends them out and instructs them.

  • 247 TurkishFan101 // Mar 29, 2014 at 4:06 PM

This is a joke, Pardew has basically took away Ben Arfa’s ability and free roam of attacking and forced him try to defend and limiting him from pushing forward.

He has basically dumbed-down us fans to think Ben Arfa doesnt deserve a place in Newcastle squad, constantly blaming him for losses and make fans hate him so he gets sold on for profit in summer.

Well fans you asked for this crap, keep on feeding the regime, going to matches and buying merchandise at this rate we will be worse then Portsmouth.

  • 248 Marty-Toon // Mar 29, 2014 at 4:06 PM

Ben Arfa showed that he would get a game for Fulham on a good day,he was barely noticeable.

Pardew saying again we cant compete financially ..What a load of bollocks ..I’m sick of hearing that tit of a man saying that ..a front man and excuse merchant for Ashley

..Everything is out in the open now ..pardew saying ashley wants different tactics ..that should be for the manager to decide ..Pardew is a lackey for a man who knows nothing about football

Excuse after excuse not , ! not to advance ..

The money the club has now ,,at least 30 million from this season and last and 60 + million from this seasons tv and prem money ..and Pardew is saying we cant compete financially !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ..

We fill the ground and support religiously and this is all we are fed from ashley and his mouthpiece ..lets get rid of the Bas*Rds. they are pathetic ,,absolutely pathetic ..Liars, and owning a Football Club under false pretences.

How many Transfer windows without investment in top class players will it take to convince the minority that populate this blog.

The bottom line here is Ashley will not pay the wage ..the going rate for a top player

We could easily buy Remy, easy ..but we wont because we wont pay him the going rate of a top players wage, ..even though we can afford it . Ashley has got to sell up.

This is a mighty institution with amazing supporters through thick and mostly thin .

It crossed my mind in the first half that Ben arfa would be a scapegoat for Padew at half time ..you see when the team is sh*te then Pardew needs an excuse and Ben Arfa is it. ..Pardew is pathetic absolutely pathetic

And I will tell you all why we play without passion and gusto and attacking and getting forward even at home

What have we got to lose. We are safe so why not try the likes of HBA in a non fixed non defensive role . The bloke has so much skill but cannot tackle so use him where he can do the damage.
The problem we have is we spend so little time attacking we spend all the match defending so its obvious eventually other teams are going to score against us. Soton had 15 shots in first half …wtf.
I would rather Beardsley was given the chance, he did not want it when KK left but would be ideal now. I would even take Harper’s choice of next manager Brucie.

I have finally seen enough to be convinced that Pardew and Carver who knows fcuk all hte dinosaur should leave ASAP! Sack em Ashley and bring in a proper manager and staff, for you and our sake!!

PARDEW AND CARVER NEED TO GO ASAP!!

This has been the last straw for me. We looked lost all match.

Then to cap it off the subs were worse. Bringing on another lb when we’re losing 3-0!!?? I don’t care if he played Dummett at LM, what the hell is he thinking playing him out of position like that? Isn’t is wiser to bring on Marveaux, Gosling or something like that that can perhaps change the game a bit, so we can at least have a pop at goal.

What a shambles. Out fought, out classed and out played by Southampton FFS! Long gone are the days teams are afraid to play against us. These days their mouths water of the thought as they know they are going to have an easy game with lots of shooting practice!

We have a decent set of players but with no tactics and a clueless manager as today he has proved it more than ever!

Disgraceful, disgusting…these words fall way short of how poor we are under this regime.

Sack Pardew and Carver before the window starts or else we are sure to be in a worse position next season!!

embarrassing. we need to clear the dead wood and start from scratch. it’s a shame we can’t get relegated as we could do with that to rebuild….again.
Play the kids for the last few games. Armstrong, Sammy & Streete.
Goofy was so lazy today, dejong isn’t good enough. Cisse not good enough. Back 4 not good enough.

  • 453 Ketsbaia9 // Mar 29, 2014 at 5:03 PM

Exactly. The only real creative player that we had today was Anita, but he’s only a defensive midfielder. Ben Arfa shouldn’t have been taken off at half time. Marveaux should be starting every game ahead of Gouffran or Sissoko. Marveaux can make a difference. Pardew is an imbecile.

If we get it wrong in the summer we are doomed i.e. if we spend on the wrong players out of desperation. We need to get the incomings spot on. Specially strikers. We need 2 or 3 and dats a risk. If the 2 dont fire we are done. We should have bought atleast one proven striker last summer.

i really dont think our squad is that bad, i 100% think our plight is down to poor coaching,

you say striking options, we do not create enough to warrent even having a striker,

if you look at sissoko and goofy being played as wingers , out off position and offering nothing going forward from those positions,
pardew must see this , he could and should come up with a better system that suits the players we have

most of our problems are coaching and confidence,,

Give Remy a huge wage packet and have him sign on the dotted line. That would save us from a certain disaster. I don’t care if he’s only here for the money anymore, I just want to see us play proper football like every other team play against us.

Remy signed even if it costs us getting only 1 more striker in instead of the much needed 2 or 3.

At least we will know the lad is a proven goal scorer.

Don’t sign De Jong he’s pants
Don’t sell HBA he is our only world class player along with Debuchy.

Finally get rid of ‘rotton’wood like Strolla Ameobi, Obertan, Gosling, Santon etc

And Sack the useless Pardew and Carver!!

What a bunch of jokers claiming to know something about football and using our only top player as a scapegoat.

They can’t say HBA didn’t track back this time he was really trying and has been these last 3 matches.

I would cry if I would see him leave and Pardew stay.

Sack Pardew Sunday , Hoddle in on Monday ..at least Hoddle is a deep thinking Football man..

That would give Hoddle time to formulate plans in the Transfer window and asses the staff.

Pardew is just a chancer who’s failed.

Hoddle would Organise the club from top to bottom.

Hoddle would not be my top Choice ..I just know he is a mate of Ashley’s, and I’m thinking of what’s possible in Ashley’s head .. Hoddle would be a better Manager with a better team on the pitch than Pardew.

My first Choice as gaffa would be Rafa

Bottom line is I want Ashley to Sell up. We are not run as A Football Club ..thats not Ashleys priority

I really have had as much as a fair minded supporter can stand for .

Ashley is walking all over Newcastle United and The people of the north east .

    well all the french players.
you see, lots of the bloggers are blaming the bad results on pardew alone and expect us to be higher in the table with a manager like martinez. So basically what they are saying is our team is a quality team and has got internationals otherwise the is no chance we could see the performances of the team be that good.

If they aren’t world class (I believe they just average myself) then pardew has did great and 90% of the season’s fault should be aimed at ashley for 2 windows without investment.

Pardew and his tactics? Not sure what they are

Never won a game where the other team scored first. This is a problem as clearly it showed our lack of consistency, show up one week, go 1-0 up and we dont lose, but today was the opposite.

Also, Pardew is talking about getting signings in for the Summer so he can persuade Remy to stay – well I hope so

  • 493 sparky55 // Mar 29, 2014 at 5:23 PM

not easy to be objective after a performance like that…we were dreadful.

Southampton’s movement was terrific but to be honest we made them look better than they were because we were so poor.

The season was over after we lost to Cardiff in the cup and you can see it our lack of application and fight…which is of course all down to the manager, his tactics, his set up and his ability to get the players up for the game.

That performance was so bad we’re actually doing a dis service to the rest of the premiership because we’ve given up and we’re rolling over most of the time meaning the teams we’ve already played at the bottom are at a significant disadvantage to the ones we haven’t played from the bottom of the league because the team hasn’t got any fight left in it and the results are therefore skewed.

Irrespective of the fact our season is over we should be coming off the park on our knees and nearly puking up like Scott Parker used to…not walking of and saying…ahhh well…season never over.

Not asking a lot there am I?

    PATHETIC…THE LOT OF THEM

We are a team of mediocre players with a mediocre manager and an owner who wants ‘Top Ten”, isn’t keen on cup runs as there isn’t enough money in it and has little or no affection for the Toon or its fans. He’s an accidental owner as we guess he onloy watned the speculative quick buck sell on when he bought the club – abnothre stock market style gamble.
Our £2-6m players are all journeymen – might be on the fringes of a national side or U19 standard but are not regular starters in a top international side or even stars in a mid ranking national side.
We have only really had Cabs and Remy showing class this season. Benny is so inconsistent he looks a great pub team player one week and a top international the next -trouble is you just do not know which guy is going to turn up. Real classy players can deliver more often than not.

Mediocre players + playing badly + lack of motivation – class players – decent game plan = relegation form

Southampton and Everton both have more international class players and better management than we do – try Barkley and Lallana for starters.

Trouble is our mid table side is in relegation form – playing as badly as last season and with AP not knowing how to get out of the rut. Our defence is as bad as any time it has been in the Prem.

And then we go and outplay Hull and give them their worst loss of the season at home. Totally inconsistent.

Pards is always building Colo up. He was a great player and still is a good captain. Problem is I think Pards is told to build players up as much as possible whenever there is a possibility another club is after him. I think last week Pards mentioned Colo always wants to be the best player on the pitch which was followed by Pards stating ‘He usually is’…. Come on Alan !
I think our best back four is Debuch, MYM, Will, Haidara.
Pards doesn’t but its interesting how many goals we are leaking.
