The Daily Star has an exclusive out today, in which they report that Newcastle United are favorites to sign England International right-back Micah Richards, and it’s not the first time we have been linked with this player over the last year or so.
Micah Richards – Newcastle favorites to sign player
Richards started his career at Oldham Athletic, but he moved to Manchester City in 2003 as a 14 year-old, and came through the once famous Manchester City Youth Academy.
Richards has been squeezed out of the City first team under new manager Manuel Pellegrini, and he wants to play more first team football, and he would get that at Newcastle, where he could play either right back or center-back.
The news is that Newcastle are willing to offer £8M for the player who made his England debut in November of 2006 against the Netherlands when only 18 years old, and he has played 13 times for his country, but has lost his place in the England squad.
Richards is out of contract next year at City, and it seems he would like to move on to another club to ensure he gets first team football and gets his career back on track.
His wages may be a problem for Newcastle, and the Star lists them at £72K/week but maybe he would take less than that in order to move to a club where he could play a lot more games.
Richards made his first team debut for City in October 2005 against Arsenal, and he came on as a substitute, and was just 17 years old at the time.
Since then Micah’s played 241 times for City with 9 goals, and he would be a reasonable signing for Newcastle and certainly has experience, having played 179 Premier League games.
And and with local lad Steven Taylor likely to move on this summer, Newcastle need to bring in at least one center-back in the summer, and Fab Coloccini may also be leaving this summer.
And it could be that Manchester City want to sign Arsenal’s right-back Bacary Sagna in the summer, when his contract runs out at the Etihad and he will become a free agent.
And it could be that Micah has seen the writing on the wall – as far as the end of his Manchester City career.
