Bonuses Will Be Paid Out – Targets Set Before Season Starts

8:00 pm, Monday, March 31st, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 103 Comments

When you set bonus targets and those targets are met, the bonuses are paid out – that happens in any business – and when targets are set,  that extra money is paid out if and only if those targets are met or exceeded, and sometimes there are graduated increases in the payments depending  by how much the target is exceeded.

alan pardew clos-up

Alan Pardew – will get bonus if Newcastle finish in top ten

So we expect that the Newcastle squad, manager Alan Pardew and his coaches and the administration staff (or whoever were included in the bonus scheme) will be paid bonuses this season, and the amounts would have been set back in August or even before that.

It was widely reported that if Newcastle finish in the top 10 then bonuses will be paid out.

We’ve seen some suggestions that the bonuses should not be paid out – but you cannot do that  - if the targets are met then the bonuses will be paid out.

And the fact that Newcastle have slipped badly this year, and have put in some pathetic performances and most of our points – 33 – were gained last year – has nothing to do with it.

And it seems almost certain that we will finish in at least 10th place in the league, with West Ham a full 12 points behind us at the moment in 11th place.

Maybe next year the target should be top eight or even top six – so the bonuses will be much harder to attain.

Comments welcome.

im getting very tired of seeing us get linked with all different players, the sad fact is we are not in the running for any of these players so I would like to see that carry on stop.Debuchy is on his way out and he has been by far one of our better players this year. The fact that frighten’s me so much is just exactly how much we did rely on cabaye. My god our total whole gameplan went through him.i didn’t think he was that important but his absence from a creating and defending point of view was quite immense.our midfield now is all muscle and now brain.sissoko, tiote and anita have zero creativity between them, had cabaye not been in this team until January we could be in deep trouble right now.unfortunately luck runs out EVENTUALLY FAT MIKE AND YOUR PUPPET ON A STRING MANAGER.

  • 16 MercurialStephen // Mar 31, 2014 at 8:26 PM

KEEGAN HAD US PLAYING FOOTBALL AHEAD OF OUR TIME,PARDEW HAS US PLAYING FOOTBALL AN ANCIENT TIME.

  • 17 santonthenewmaldini // Mar 31, 2014 at 8:29 PM

Would love Sunderland to go down because I am sick of them beating us easily under Pardew and if he stays manager then the beatings will continue so to save myself the anger and embarrassment its just better if they go down

When they were singing that chant “We always win 3 nil” at St James’s this season I would have loved to have stuck the head into Pardew!!

  • 22 valle // Mar 31, 2014 at 8:50 PM

To match the fans expectations regarding the team, results and tactics I reckon we need to spend around 50 million… We will most likely spend a third of that at the most so I really dont see anything changing anytime soon.

  • 23 welshgeordie9 // Mar 31, 2014 at 8:52 PM

No I haven’t got a problem with him to be honest he quite a funny guy, but if he’s got a problem with me then that’s his problem couldn’t give a rats ass either way.

  • 24 Ciaran // Mar 31, 2014 at 8:52 PM

    Valle

I’d imagine most fans expectations are that we are consistently a top 6 side, on par with where Everton find themselves. I really don’t think it would cost £50 million to achieve that, so with all due respect I disagree with your opinion.

  • 25 jazzyp // Mar 31, 2014 at 8:54 PM

Surely you can see where Jazzy got that assumption, since you took something jazzy said, which had no reference to me, and then proceeded to make it about me in an insulting manner.

If you have no problem with me I would appreciate it if you stopped referencing me in your pointless comments that have nothing to do with football. Cheers pal.

That is indeed true. Would understand it better if I’d ever instigated anything with him, but other than telling him to grow up and stop being so childish in his manner (again, advice that went unheeded) I’ve done nothing to the bloke.

Cheer up Ciaran where’s your sense of humour

  • 30 valle // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:01 PM

Ciaran… To get anywhere near top 6 we need to replace Cabs, thats 10 million at least. Then we need two proven goalscorers, one of which can get us around 20 goals a season. Thats around 15 million each. Then we need a winger to provide assists and our defense need some shaking up as well. 50 million is about right for a top 6 target to get what we need and replace what we will lost and have already lost (Cabs, Remy, HBA, Colo to name a few).

  • 31 valle // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:02 PM

    LOOOOOOOOOL ! .

  • 34 Ciaran // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:06 PM

    Valle

Don’t think we need 2 20 goal-a-season strikers. The only clubs who have those at the moment are Liverpool, Man City and Man United – even though they are misfiring. We need 1 20 goal a season man, which is all we had when we were finishing in the top 4 when we had Shearer.

We do need to replace Cabaye and replace any outgoing players, but look at the quality of players Everton and Southampton have snapped up over the last few years for absolute peanuts. There is quality for relatively cheap out there, you just have to back your scouts to find them.

    Welsh

I’ve asked you nicely. Don’t reference me again. Cheer pal.

  • 35 toon kk // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:07 PM

Our players out on loan will be part of our first team next season and probably about 14 mill available for signings if we can get them over the line.

Not sure this has been discussed but, Mash has been to the last 4 games in person, at a time when there is zero to play for.

Apparently, he had not been to a game for some months – not sure if this is correct or not?

If it is, I doubt it is because he suddenly got finished with some other project and now has time on his hands.

I think he might be there to assess for himself what he wants to do next season in terms of staff, both on and off the field of play.

Not saying he will suddenly plunder 100m but, it’s a good sign that he is actually interested in the club again.

  • 44 toon kk // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:17 PM

Make no mistake we’ll we’ll take no prisoners and won’t be held to ransom in the transfer market.

  • 46 valle // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:18 PM

Ciaran… I think you misunderstood me mate, I wrote we need two good strikers whereas one of those should be a 20 goal a season striker. The other can be a creator of some sort, either targetman or a technical striker but I still think a combined fee for around 30 million for two top strikers are about right. Perhaps we can get one of them a bit cheaper, i dunno, but then again the 20 goal a season striker might also cost a bit more than 15 million so i reckon its in that bracket. But, as I said, I think we will try the bargain bin again this season and at the most spend 20 million. We might get lucky and strike gold with 1 or 2 cheap players, but will that be enough to take us into the top 6 positions? I doubt it to be honest. In my book, we need 4 absolute top players to progress to the top 6. two creative players a top goal scorer and a top defender.

  • 47 MercurialStephen // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:19 PM

HOW IS THIS CLUB SUPPOSEDLY SO SHORT OF FUNDS IN THE TRANSFER MARKET,I MEAN ARE WE TO BELIEVE THS RUBBISH THAT WE CAN NOT COMPETE FINANCIALLY WITH THE SAINTS.

TWO YEARS AGO WHEN WE FINISHED ABOVE LIVERPOOL,WE SHOULD HAVE WENT ON TO GREATER THINGS.WE COULD HAVE BEEN IN LIVERPOOL’S POSITION NOW HAD MONEY BEEN INVESTED 2 YEARS AGO AND WITH LOUIS VAN GAAL AS OUR MANAGER.

  • 52 valle // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:24 PM

Jazzyp… No, I really dont, I think it will be another window filled with hopes build up with the talk of Micah Richards, Doumbia, Lukaku, Cabella, Grenier and the likes. Only to get those hopes teared apart and we end up with frustration and tears. We might get one good players in the 10 million bracket and a few 2-3 million players as well as a few young hopefulls for the academy. I reckon we will spend 20 millions at the most, which is just about what we received for Cabaye. The TV-Money will be used to pay wages and for the general running of the club is what we will be told… Oh, and free transfers arent cheap you know!

I would love nothing more than for us to have a good clear out as is often said on here. Certain players who have been mentioned enough and have had more chances than deserved should be moved on. We could easily have 6-7 players leave us this summer and to most good riddance. But it whom Ashley will bring in is the bigger question

  • 57 p // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:32 PM

@47 Southampton made losses and the owner had to write off a bunch of loans.

When are people going to understand that Mash did not buy the club to sink all his hard earned into it. His intention is always been that is be self sustaining.

You can bitch that he ran it badly, for example by not raising revenue or generally bad decisions but you can’t slate him for not treating is as a personal money disposal system like many owners do.

  • 58 aidytoon9 // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:32 PM

Now should be the time for people to stay away from games, Ashley May not sell straight away as he will drive a hard bargin anyway but this will give us media attention, can you imagine match of the day etc.
Someone will buy this club at the right price, just look at the fact that we get 50,000 every home game.
Ashley will sell if people stop going, he put it up for sale last time when he was getting grief.
Just look what he is doing, he bans newspapers from saying anything bad about his regime.
He gags pards, he says nothing himself to the fans, he is laughing at us.
Could go on forever about this man.
Not saying we should be winning league just showing some ambition and giving fans something to look forward to every weekend.

  • 59 toon kk // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:33 PM

It will be probably numbers rather than quality coming in so don’t build your hopes up.

Pards will work his magic and get us playing on the front foot, trouble is the players can’t be arsed.

I dont think people are expecting him to plough his money into it most understand he wants it to be self sufficient but you cant announce a 10 million pound profit and have TV money coming in which is a record amount and claim you are skint or not buy any players !!

Also the Wonga deal was supposed to guarantee a player every season and it has not happened ??

10 million last summer could have got us 2 or 3 players add in the Wonga payment we possibly could have got another player

I live in hope that we spend money this summer I just cant see it I think its going to be a real struggle next season

  • 67 valle // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:44 PM

Jazzyp… I agree, but what worries me is that to many of the players brought in to change us to the better havnt really cut the mustard lately. Cisse cant score, Sissoko is very hit or miss, Mbiwa is in his second season and still dosnt look like he is cut out for the EPL. Santon didnt really become the defensive talent we had hoped for, Cisse stopped scoring and although he has looked better lately, he looks like he is miles away from being the 20 goal a season striker we need to improve. Allot of the players that we are about to get rid of, is players brought in under Pardew and Carr, such as Obertan, LDJ and Marveaux as well.

  • 68 santonthenewmaldini // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:47 PM

    @valle

Well that either tells you our scouting department is not as good as we think it is or our management team are not good enough

toon kk IS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT,WE ARE NOT GOING TO LET OUR CLUB DIE.

IF WE WERE DEPENDING ON welshgeordie9,THE CLUB WOULD BE ALREADY DEAD AND BURIED.

THE LEGION OF ANGRY AND DISGRUNTLED TOON FANS IS GROWING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

  • 70 p // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:49 PM

santon, yes I am not arguing that we should have brought in some players. I think that is indisputable.

But many on here, ask why for example we can not compete with clubs like Southampton (today) or Norwich etc.

I am merely pointing out that that those clubs have made a loss (which is not on Ashley’s agenda) or, they spunked all their TV money before they even got it. Is it not true than all of that is paid at the end of the season with some of it being based on merit, how many times their games were televised etc.

If you give Mash the benefit of the doubt (and I certainly understand why people would rather not) then you might think that he will spend when he gets money and not before.

I know some will say , what about Cabaye’s fee, blah, blah, blah. It’s a fair point and it seems that they did try to get Cabella and Grenier. Frankly though, is that those players would not be seen as players for this season. and I do reckon – and this is very wrong – that they felt there was no pressure to overspend in January because where they were in the league.

I am okay with a long term plan but you do have to give the fans something in the meantime.

That said, Summer will be here before we know it and we will see what he does, one thing is for sure, there is no second guessing that man.

I imagine it won’t be as bad as the doom and gloomers on here but, it certainly won’t satisfy many of the armchair scouts on here either.

  • 73 toon kk // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:53 PM

Our scouting isn’t bad but we could do better much better, why don’t we bring more pace into our sluggish squad?

  • 74 valle // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:55 PM

santonthenewmaldini… I reckon your right that the management arent good enough. But, although I rate Carr, I dont think he is given the backing he need to get us the real gems neither. I seem to remember that we could have gotten PEA for 10 million? Yet our owner wouldnt take the risk and trust Carr. So its a combined problem of our manager not being good enough and our owner running our club like he runs his bargain stores… On the cheap. That said, Carr might have some of the blame as well, but I agree that its really hard to tell if we cant trust our manager to get the best out of the players.

  • 75 aidytoon9 // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:55 PM

Ashley has had his time, what happened to the five year plan?

Carroll sold, Nolan sold, Enrique sold, cabaye sold all for decent money and how much of that 70 million has been spent?

We can debate any points on here but it stays the same for me until he goes.

  • 76 p // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:56 PM

you always get some duds, even Fergie had his hit and misses. Some players do not work out for a given team but do elsehwere – remember Tomasson? What about Veron?

Some just never realize there potential – Hugo Viana anyone? Was he here under bobby Robson’s coaching?

That said, I do think are whole coaching set-up is somewhere between average and pisspoor

  • 78 santonthenewmaldini // Mar 31, 2014 at 9:57 PM

    @P

I honestly believe the best thing we could do was get a new manager and give him a few good players to work with as opposed to giving Pardew 5 or 6 players to ruin

But if we are going down the Pardew “Player” route then I would not say no to getting :

    Holtby
    Caulker
    De Guzman
    Gomis
    Ince

Could all be bought for under 15 million and would offer an upgrade on all the fringe players that are on the way out we would then need to spend 10 or 15 million on that goal scorer like a Remy/Lukaku esque player

There should be no excuse for us not to spend big this summer none at all

getting rid of nolan and carroll when we did was bad business, what i would do to have those 2 back in the team, but pards and ashley know better, dont they ?.
How is thre time to show how pi//ed off we are.
boycotting games is the only way to let them know we want them out, nothing to lose now- everything to gain .

okay Steve, move on now, you’ve made your point, we get what you think…

Ashley is here to get the club relegated to the conference whilst robbing all the fans of their first borns just because he “ates geordies” etc etc

Some agree with you, some don’t but we all have heard the argument and blurting it out over and over likely won’t change anyone’s mind at this point.

  • 89 p // Mar 31, 2014 at 10:20 PM

stuart, Nolan was suffering Damien Duff syndrome – wanted long contract on loads of money. The club had been burned by that before many times.

Carroll, great guy but 35m was considerable over market price and look at his injury record since.

Additionally, he may well have gone off the rails had he stayed, the early signs were there, Range Rovers being set on fire etc.

i’ll convert you to my way of thinking SOONER RATHER THAN LATER,big mike has your weak minds where he wants them.

the mercurial one has his supporters on here as you can all see.WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH.WHERE’S THE CLUB GOING TO BE WITHOUT OUR MONEY.EVENTUALLY SJP WILL BOYCOTT HOME MATCHES.

  • 91 p // Mar 31, 2014 at 10:27 PM

    stevo…

I detach myself from the ownership and running of the club so far as possible and just try to enjoy the games. I think if you don’t, you will go insane and start typing stuff in caps all the time.

Of course, the games have not been fun either recently but, again you have to try to detach yourself from it and be optimistic. At the end of the day, a weakened team went to a long away game and got beat by a Saints team that played very well.

That all said, I have not lived in the NE for a long time so he does not seem much of my money anyway.

  • 93 Geremi's Prosthetic Leg Fund // Mar 31, 2014 at 10:35 PM

I’m of the opinion that the most important purchase we can make this summer is a top CM, we need someone who is at least as good as Cabaye, they need vision, technique, leadership and positioning qualities at least, and tackling and pace wouldn’t go amiss either.
Now to be able to bring that in we’re looking at anywhere from 10 – 20m.
We desperately need a leader as well as damn good player, that and a striker with pace and movement who can also link up play. In the modern game players like Cisse are worthless in my opinion unless you’re a top top side. We desperately need cohesiveness and a CM and ST of those types would go a long way to achieving that.
That would be around 30 million for those 2 players, but we need the finished articles. We then need to supplement that with a young CB to challenge Yanga & Williamson, someone with height and strength as well as pace and good technique.
Wingers we should be ok if Ameobi can push ahead and possibly Aarons comes into the fold but we would also need an experienced and pacey one to bulk it up.
Now my biggest fears are a) we simply won’t spend on the quality we need, and b) said quality just won’t see us a viable option any longer, I think we’ve missed the boat and I’m sure players and agents are now wise to the way we conduct out business and we are far from the right team to choose for both players wanting to improve and players looking for European football and something to fight for and achieve.
I’m genuinely worried that the management haven’t factored this into their plans and we will be left stranded again by the time the season rolls around.
This will be the hardest summer NUFC have had since relegation, it’s critical we make the right moves.

  • 94 AaranD // Mar 31, 2014 at 10:36 PM

We have spent around £50 – £60 million over the past 4 or so seasons. So we do spend, but being the first team in prem history not to buy a single player through the whole season is not very satisfying.
Hopefully Big Mike has seen enough over the past few games to justify a bit of spending in the summer. Always expect the unexpected with the Toon these days :)!!

First time commenting after being a long time admirer.

Overall this season must be rated as a success. I think many would have taken a top ten finish if you offered it at the beginning of the season. It is at least a step in the right direction.

Losing Cabaye has been massive, but it was always going to happen and we got a decent amount of money for him considering his age, time left on his contract and our status as a ‘mid table’ team. Our reaction to his loss was horrific. No replacement and a back up striker who lets be honest is not proving his worth so far was unacceptable and is a massive reason why we are struggling now.

Remy has been brilliant, was always going to be difficult to sign him permanently and i have no problem that it wasnt permanent in the first place considering his rape charge. But you never know, there is always a chance that he loves Newcastle. Lets just hope he finds the woman of his dreams here!

Our style of football has been a huge improvement from last season. Much better on the eye and especially when we had cabaye. Last seasons play overall wasnt too impressive. Recent performances have obviously been poor but that is to be expected occasionally.

We are making a profit, and that is obviously fantastic. This is only going to get larger with tv deals etc.

Lets just hope this next transfer window proves to be a good one. Our needs are obvious and extensive. But i am hopeful! We may be getting rid of a few players, Obertan, Marveaux, Ameobi, Jonas and Gosling. And this may just be for starters. The money and freed up wages + Cabaye fee looks like a promising wallet. My theory is that Ashley must know he HAS to spend or otherwise there will be total uproar from everyone including staff. And if we dont spend then it would be fully deserved.

Would love a strong pacy striker such as a Lukaku or Doumbia (as mentioned earlier) But i think these are out of our reach at the minute. One small step at a time! but someone along those lines and someone who can link up well up front is also a must!

Its in midfield where we need something extra. Our wingers need to be much improved…Gouffran as much as i love him is a squad rotation player and Ben arfa is maybe one of those impact players to be used off the bench (how many times has he changed the game when coming on but not delivered when starting? Without stating the obvious we also need a creative midfielder to replace cabaye, maybe even two.

Back 4. Now this is tricky. Colo is obviously a favourite but im still not convinced. Would prefer a more orthadox commanding CB who i think would work perfectly with Mbiwa.

Cant wait for the excitement of this transfer window!

P @89— yep maybe your right to some extent – but , the way ilook at it is- if we had nolan playing on saturday at soton , i would guarentee, not one of those out field players would have been dossing around on that pitch like they were paralysed from the neck down .
Carroll – injured ? Yes, maybe if he had stayed . who knows – but, if carroll had been in a black and white top instead of cisse, and the chances he has missed , carroll would have put half of them , if not more , away.

You mentioned the 35M for carroll, yep good money , but who for??have we seen it ?? what we had on the pitch on saturday was rubbish, noone as good as nolan and no-one as good as carroll. was it good business after all???

Stuart, I know a lot of people say that about the money for Carroll but that makes no difference to be honest. If we did not get 35m for him, that would have been 35m cut out from somewhere we have spent money subsequently – selling other players, not signing players we did, not signing players we will in the future.

As I have said many times before, I think he wants his loan back but beyond that I don’t think it is about draining as much cash out of the club as possible – he could put his money to more profitable use elsewhere. There is not that much money to be made in football as an owner. Something like 70% of revenue are wages, at other clubs it can be higher. There is easier ways to make money.

    @Moussa

Thank you for a good breakdown on current affairs, some good insight, but with all due respect your wrong in some factors:
1- A top 10 finish is the bare minimum newcastle should aim for! top 6 + (or europe nxt season) is classified as a success, where we are now isn’t
    2-Agree with the cabaye situation
3- Remy’s mentioned already he’s not staying and quite frankly we might as well send him home and give armstrong a start
4-Style improved! we were boring and clueless last year we are just as boring and clueless now
5-When we finished 5th, that summer was are time to build a team to challenge, even the top 4, what did we do get 1 player who took nearly and year to adapt, any player willing to come to the toon now isn’t worth it! sad but true!

Again not criticizing your comments which are put well, and i wish i had your outlook on this summer but ashley has taught me not to expect anything.
