There are reports that Newcastle are interested in Benfica’s Oscar Cardozo in the summer, as it is expected the 49 times capped Paraguayan International striker will leave Portuguese club Benfica for a new challenge.
Oscar Cordoza – 31 years old in May
But Cordoza turns 31 in May, and only yesterday Lee Charnley, the new Newcastle Managing Director said that Newcastle would continue to buy players whose best days were still ahead of them, and they would be in their mid 20s or younger.
His agent said this on Radio Cardinal about Cordoza:
“I think in June it will be a good time for a transfer, if possible.”
Cordoza stands 6’4″ tall and joined Benfica in 2007 from Newell’s Old Boys, and since then he has played 277 times for Benfica with 163 goals and 36 assists.
Newcastle will be losing French International striker Loic Remy in the summer, when his loan spell ends, with both Arsenal and Tottenham interested in signing the striker.
But we cannot believe the Tyneside club would buy a striker who will be 31 in the summer, even though Oscar can still score some goals, even at 31.
But his best days are certainly now behind him.
What do you think?

Comment #2Even at 21 he’d be too old for Ashley to spend money on.

Comment #3Old is gold. He can still do the biz. Where has the current recruiting policy gotten us? Out of the box thinking needed at times.

Comment #5As much chance of signing Oscar Madison and Felix Unger.
A figure of 20 million is being kicked around. By most reckoning we need at least 2 strikers (assuming Cisse is kept) and at least one attacking playmaker (grenier/Cabella etc.) both classed at over 10 million minimum. Add a couple of wingers and at least one centreback just replacing some of the out-of-contract players and those certain to leave. That does not give any extra cover at centre midfield so we would remain threadbare and cup-averse. Still, if Carr can pull that off like January ’13 he’ll have earned any corn he gets.

Comment #6Excellent player and for the role he can play he can stay 10 more years.BUT he must be paired with quick striker like Remy,Ba type of player. He can’t play with Luuk De Jong or Papiss Demba.
