22 year-old Ghanaian striker Majeed Waris is the latest striker to be linked with Newcastle, and he is currently on loan at Valenciennes, who are struggling in the French League, but Waris is still having a very good season there.
Majeed Waris – 22 year-old Ghanaian striker
Majeed joined Spartak Moscow early last year from Swedish club BK Hacken, and he has been on loan at Valenciennes since the beginning of this year, and he has done very well with 9 goals in just 12 games for the struggling French side.
Valenciennes could still be relegated, and at the moment they are 3rd bottom of the league and still in the drop zone.
Majeed was called up to the Ghana national squad against Chile in February 2012, and made his debut in that game, and he currently has 9 caps for his country with 4 goals, and was was born Tamale, Ghana.
The news is that Graham Carr and other Newcastle scouts have been monitoring the player, who had a very good record in Sweden for BK Hacken, and played 63 times and scored 30 goals there before signing on at Spartak Moscow, where he has made 12 appearances with one goal.
He had a terrific season in 2012 in Sweden, and became the first Ghanaian to score five goals in a single game in Europe, as well as becoming the leading goalscorer in the Allsvenskan (Swedish League) with 12 goals in just 9 games.
Majeed was named the Swedish Premier League’s player of the year in 2012, and Ghana Football Association President Kwesi Nyantakyi was quoted as saying:
“His achievements have brought honor to our country.”
Majeed stands just over 5’7″ in height so he’s not a tall striker, but he certainly seems to be able to score the goals.
And that’s what Newcastle need in the summer for next season, since we cannot seem to put the ball in the back of the net at the moment.
One other big club Everton, are also said to be tracking the striker.
