Newcastle Closing In On Top French Striker

Newcastle have again be linked today with top young Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette, who is banging in the goals for Lyon this season, with 20 goals in 40 games in all competitions so far this season.

Alexandre Lacazette – Newcastle again linked with 22 year-old

The 5’9″ striker has played for all of the French Youth sides, and he has two caps for the full French team, and he would seem to be a top young French prospect, if only we can get the lad to Newcastle this summer.

Lyon are not challenging for a European place this season, and they are in 5th place, but 9 points adrift of 3rd placed Lille.

And if they don’t make the Champions League it is expected they will need to sell some players to shore up their financial position, and Lacazette is one of the players they will let go.

The player turns 23 next month, and he still has two years left on his contract, and he will not come cheap, but there again Newcastle will have some big money to spend this summer – we’ll just have to wait and see how much  owner Mike Ashley is willing to spend.

The Newcastle squad needs to be rebuilt this summer and especially at striker, where at the moment both Papiss Cisse and Luuk de Jong are finding it difficult to score goals, and both Loic Remy and Shola Ameobi will be leaving the club in the summer.

But Newcastle could face significant competition for Lacazette, and Everton are interested in the striker, and their rivals Liverpool are also said to be monitoring the young striker.

Both Liverpool based clubs could potentially offer the player Champions League football next season, and that would put Newcastle at a disadvantage in the negotiations.

Everton want a striker in to replace on-loan Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, who is likely to join a bigger club in the summer.

Lukaka has been impressive at Everton this season, with 14 goals in 27 appearances for the Toffees who have found new life under new manager Roberto Martinez.

One thing Newcastle have going for them is that they are a well known and respected club in France, and have already developed a number of French players recently – such as Yohan Cabaye, Mathieu Debuchy, Loic Remy and Moussa Sissoko, and young players know they will improve on Tyneside.

Newcastle also have strong relationships with a number of the top French agents and that will help – but the big strike  against Newcastle these days is we have only limited ambition, and little chance of making the Champions League while Mike Ashley is the owner.

The news is that Lacazette is likely to cost around £10M, and Newcastle are trying to move in quickly and do a deal before other interested clubs like Everton, and there’s a reasonable possibility we can get this player to Newcastle.

Alan Pardew has said he wants more English players in the squad, but so far we are again being linked mostly with French based players.

But French players are better value than English players – which is why we think we’ll see mostly French players drafted again this summer – money rules at Newcastle these days – as we all know.

Newcastle do have money to spend in the summer, with £20M from the sale of Yohan Cabaye in January, and Newcastle are in the black these days,  and will get big money from the Premier League in May.

The question is whether Mike Ashley will approve some big signings in the summer – we certainly need them – and Alexandre Lacazette would cost around £10M.

That would be £10M well spent by Newcastle.

Hah! Liverpool and Everton’s interest in Lacazette’ll come to nothing.

They’re not big clubs like what we are!

We believe it when we see it.
There are more rumours about possible NUFC purchases than Cisse’s goal record this term… oh, wait a minute.
