Newcastle Interested In 24 Year-Old Monaco Striker

3:15 pm, Saturday, April 12th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 268 Comments

Football Direct News is reporting that Newcastle are looking at AS Monaco striker Emmanuel Riviere, and could make a move for the French striker in the summer.

Emmanuel Riviere

Emmanuel Riviere – 24 year-old French striker

Riviere joined AS Monaco only fifteen months ago from Toulouse on a four-and-a-half-year contract, and for a fee reported to be around €4M, and since then he has had a decent record at the club – scoring 16 goals in his 44 appearances with 4 assists.

Riviere has played for all the French Youth sides and 15 times for the French U21 side with 6 goals, so he seems to be a decent player.

The news is that Monaco will be bringing in new players in the summer, as they plan for life back in the Champions League, and they will be willing to let their 24 year-old striker move on, and Newcastle are interested.

It seems that Riviere will cost around £10M, and of course Newcastle will need to bring in a number of strikers this summer with Loic Remy, Shola Ameobi and Luuk de Jong all leaving the club for different reasons.

The player was previously at St. Etienne (85 appearances, 19 goals and 14 assists) and Toulouse (47 appearances, 10 goals and 2 assists).

Comments welcome.

Pretty lucky that the goal post hit the crouch there…close.

So disappointing watching us get dominated by Stoke and playing route one against them. The irony.

I’m using the “feed2all” one and it’s okay. Although it does make the team playing in yellow appear to be not as good as the team in red and white.

One thing I like about Gosling is his runs into the box. Always willing to get in there and atleast provide a threat. We have so little numbers in the box when we attack.

  • 10 Mike's Iron Curtain // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:24 PM

Gosling is a more mobile Nolan, that unfortunately can’t finish.

Look what happens when a wide-man aims for a player in the box, instead of just hopefully floating into a general area like we usually do – a chance is made!

  • 11 Ancientcoptic // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:25 PM

You would think with a 3-5-2 we would dominate the midfield, but the reverse effect is happening.

Looks more like a 5-3-2… parked deep in our own half.

  • 12 Ibizatoon // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:25 PM

Graeme…Apparently that site has nothing to do with SD, it’s just that SD paid for the naming rights or something for a while, but that has now ended. It was never going to last I suppose, I mean, Ashley paying for advertising? Must have been furious when he found out!

Come off it Shola! When have you ever scored or got near from that distance? Could see the adrenaline running through him, did those diddy steps like a kid does before hitting a ball in excitement

  • 16 Ibizatoon // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:27 PM

Mindshaft, this is Shola. Shola, this is Mindshaft. I would have thought you’d had met before?

Not worth watching this kind of football!

  • 18 IITianToon // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:29 PM

The idea from Pardew is good but even a simpleton can see that Cisse and Shola TOGETHER is an awful way to go about it .

  • 19 Mike's Iron Curtain // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:29 PM

Krul is always so sloppy and slow in the head. £10m – bite their hand off.

  • 20 MUTINYbyLEMONS // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:30 PM

hehe I’m gonna miss Shola. the good and the bad. Unfortunately there are more bad memories than good but it will be strange not having him at Newcastle, he has been with us forever. I wouldn’t him staying (as long as he only plays 1 in 10 games) (as he is only good 1 in 10 games :p )

  • 21 Ibizatoon // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:30 PM

Good pass Anita…Timmy, how could you miss that chance?!?

At least we’re showing a threat in front of goal. Shame it’s the wrong goal, but hey, one step at a time.

  • 22 Toon1978 // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:32 PM

Gosling waited FARRRR to long to pass it back to Cisse in Stoke box.

  • 29 Toon1978 // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:36 PM

  • 31 89Norcal // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:38 PM

Right Ibiza, thought it was cisse flopping from afar but definitely stepped across him.

  • 32 Ibizatoon // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:39 PM

Norcal…Cisse did pretty well to get in to the position I think. It was a close call, could be argued they both sort of reached the ball.

Still, it’s not like we’re going to need any favours to get a result, is it?

  • 33 89Norcal // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:40 PM

    Pardew out chants

  • 37 Laurent Robert 32 // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:42 PM

Alan Pardew is the puppet Sheriff of Hoofville.

Saying Ben Arfa needs more goals and assists yet he is in love with Shola who never scores yet Marveaux had the top assists last year and is nowhere to be seen. The man is a serial liar and delusionist.

  • 38 Ancientcoptic // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:42 PM

I almost feel sorry for Gosling, he is the only one attempting to be creative, making runs off the ball, attempting to get involved in the play etc.

    The rest are stagnant.

  • 39 IITianToon // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:43 PM

DS, yes, Pardew out chants. Good. Hope he heard how much he isn’t wanted by most.

  • 41 Ibizatoon // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:44 PM

Norcal…Sending off a couple of their players, giving us a penalty or two or heck, just give us a goal or two. I’m not too fussy :)

Ancient…In a perverse way, I quite like Gosling. At least he tries.

  • 42 Laurent Robert 32 // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:45 PM

    Ben Arfa chants too.

  • 43 Mike's Iron Curtain // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:46 PM

Dummet can’t cross for the life of him.

Shane Ferguson showed much more promise and racked up a few quality assists when he had a similar chance. All too familiar how he has fallen by the wayside. Another one of our youngsters who will fade into obscurity.

  • 44 Toon1978 // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:46 PM

Someone please remind some of the players that we are playing in YELLOW…not red n white!

  • 45 IITianToon // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:46 PM

  • 46 89Norcal // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:46 PM

Ibiza- haha not asking for all that much is it? :)

At least we are looking OK, playing better than Stoke. And Dummett is finally showing some of his cliche determination.

  • 49 89Norcal // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:48 PM

Well done Whelan, that was very colocinni-esque there

  • 50 Ibizatoon // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:49 PM

Norcal….Are we playing better than Stoke? I would say there is little to chose between the two.

Either way, no, it’s not asking too much and probably more likely to happen than us earning it. Still, we have the second half…

  • 51 Ancientcoptic // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:49 PM

I think it would be a mistake to let Gosling go myself, he has potential.

The logical thing to do at half time would be push Gouffran up front, and let Ben Arfa have a crack at that left flank. imo

  • 52 Ibizatoon // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:49 PM

    WTF just happened?

I actually blinked and missed it.

  • 58 2_goal_tino // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:51 PM

This isn’t as bad as the first 10 or so minutes suggested … but the thing we are really missing is people in the box. With a 4-4-2 you always have the winger on the oposite side of the play going into the box so there are always at least 3 in the box. Having wing-backs as our only wide players means they are always too far back to get into the box so there is never enough people in the box. Add to that the fact Shola seems content to only go as far as the edge of the penalty box we seem to only ever have Cisse in the box perhaps joined by Gosling.

That cross a minute ago from Anita was perfect, Cisse just missed it – where was Cisse? walking around behind where Anita was. Gosling has got in behind a few times and looked for a cut back and only Cisse has been anywhere near him.

pathetic. absolutely pathetic. Pardew is a disgrace, seeing us being outplayed and outfought by stoke is horrible. None of our players seem to be able to take on opposition players. Lack of decision making, passing and vision is unbelievable. Lost count of the amount of times we’ve hoofed it when we had the chance to pass it to a player who had space.

  • 79 andrew84 // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:56 PM

I’m disgusted with this club from top to bottom, but particularly the top.

  • 80 IITianToon // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:56 PM

@Moses How is it Pardew’s fault that bar Gosling and Dummet no player has shown vision or the passion to take the game on?

  • 81 Ibizatoon // Apr 12, 2014 at 3:56 PM

“What you need to understand is we can’t financially compete with other teams in the PL, so we can’t get in a taller player, but what we can do is buy Gosling some platformed shoes. Lucky for us our owner is also the owner of SD and as such we get a small discount on SD goods. The relationship between NUFC and SD is mutually beneficial…honest” – AP

who cares about cabella and any other striker or midfielder, going by what so many are saying on this blog it’s quite simple, ashley has did fine with transfers, basically it is pardew who is at fault for everything.

basically he is the reason we don’t get goals as he has ruined the great goal scorers called shola cisse and de jong.

it doesn’t end their he is the reason we don’t create chances not ashley, pardew has ruined the world class wingers jonas HBA marvo and obatan he also has ruined our defence as we should have 4 quality CB 3 quality Fb.

so ashley you have did great and this squad should be fighting for 4th place

The ball bouncing around in the air when we are on the edge of their box, tells you everything you need to know about the attacking idea.

A good side pulls the ball out of the air, puts it on the deck and plays. Our side is just not coached to do that.

    Well another defeat. BUT…

I think it was an alright performance today, a lot and I mean a lot better than usual. We should have had a pen, and both Gosling and Anita should have scored. Stoke at home are a very good team, and we deserved to come out with at least a point.

All the team played decent, except from Gouffran. However decent just wasn’t good enough today. Unlucky lads!

MBiwa and Armstrong both looked good coming on from the bench. Ben-Arfa barely touched the ball and will probably be out next match.

However I’d still like to see Pardew fired, he’s simply not good enough. He’s just not good enough for technical players. We seem to have little creativity. He likes grafters and that is why he fielded that side today.

    One banner.
    One camera.
It may have been just the one banner. Was that also just one person singing?

  • 246 Mike's Iron Curtain // Apr 12, 2014 at 5:07 PM

Yes, a Pardew out banner that was passed around the Toon supporters and 2 booming renditions of “WE WANT PARDEW OUT, SAY WE WANT PARDEW OUT!”.

Only wisgh I could have seen the coward’s face at the time, that’s if he hadn’t already scurried off early like he did last match.

  • 247 Oleg G // Apr 12, 2014 at 5:07 PM

Where is the banner that says “Ashley out”?

  • 248 andrew84 // Apr 12, 2014 at 5:07 PM

    Toon1978,

Ashley won’t sell up. If anyone DID come forward with an offer, he’d ask for 50 million more, then raise it again to 100 million once they’d said OK.

The man is a poison within the club unfortunately.

LOOL NICE IDEA I’LL ADD HIS THE BEST FOOTBALLER IN THE WORLD BETTER THEN MESI AND RONALDO. I’LL TELL WE PLAYED OUR BEST BUT THEY WAS JUST TOO GOOD FOR US LOL

It’s a joke trying to excuse pardew all the time man. How many superstars have everton got?

You could give pardew messi ronaldo and bale Pardew would still put 10 behind the ball till the 70th minute every game and try and nick 1.

Don’t you get his style or lack of one stinks

  • 251 noladonna // Apr 12, 2014 at 5:09 PM

loved that pardew out banner i can just see this gathering momentum from now on till the end of the season hopefully it will lead to pardew getting the boot

I disagree. You can blame Ashley for starving the club of funds, and you can also blame Pardew for being the most tactically inept manager in the modern history of Newcastle United.

So yeah, you can have it both ways in my opinion.

    toonking // Apr 12, 2014 at 5:07 PM

    Again with the “FACT” business?

It is not FACT at all.

You can have a manger having an average team that can play good football but the manager doesn’t know how to play his team and doesn’t know anything about tactics and formations etc.

We have an ok team. They worth much more than 3 points out of 21.

Ashley should go because he is not investing enough. Pardew should go because he doesn’t know how to play with what he has.

Ma ne pitaj nista bre. Pickice svi do jednog.

  • 256 Tsunki // Apr 12, 2014 at 5:09 PM

toonking of course it can be bad owner begets bad manager, mutually inclusive state of disrepair, a hierarchy flawed from top down.

So we lose to a team whose goal is the only attempt and a failed cross at that.

We shouldn’t be interested in anything else but usng this dead time at the end of this season to get a new manager. The owner will have to remain a work in progress.

I find the implication that I am incapable of forming my own viewpoints to be very offensive and believe you to be aiming for that effect.

I have also been on record as claiming that Pardew and Ashley are both problems that need to be dealt with, albeit more focus should be placed on Ashley.

From now on I would appreciate it if you take the opinions I express on this blog to be independently thought out opinions that can be directly attributable to myself. I don’t insult your intelligence when you form your opinions, don’t insult mine.

  • 261 Toon1978 // Apr 12, 2014 at 5:10 PM

The whole club is deflated. Mike Ashley and AP have stained the name of this once great club so many times its embarassing. Not only can AP not manage a Football team, he is pompous and an arrogant prat who has been reprimanded for his behaviour so many times for his antics its frightening. Claslees moron who is right up Ahleys HOOP its unreal. I prey for the day Ashley sells up and Pardew leaves or god forbid, gets the sack. 4 games without a sniff of a goal, 12 conceded and a starting line up that would have Sir Bobby Robson turning in his grave.

pardew got newcastle to finish 5th in his first full season in charge so therefore i don’t give a fcuk how good everton are this season.

NEXT FCUKEN SEASON IS THE EUROPA LEAGUE SEASON

  • 264 toon kk // Apr 12, 2014 at 5:12 PM

Well that diabolical performance was expected I suppose.
I wouldn’t go and watch that sh.t if I was paid to. What people get out of it is beyond me?

How pardew is still in a job is another mystery.

  • 265 lesh // Apr 12, 2014 at 5:13 PM

toonking….. Pardew was the one who said we had a superb squad.

Ashley failed (through Kinnear) to replace Cabaye who has proved to be a great loss which has clearly impacted on the squad.

But, it’s been up to Pardew to motivate and inspire the squad – he’s failed to do that.

Although I urged support for Pardew in the middle of the season, it’s about tine that Ashley started to look for a replacement to join us during the early part of the close season.

Van Gaal’d be nice and would restore some credibility and attract players but being realistic, we haven’t a cat in hell’s chance of getting him on board.

Ah well, another season of Pardew to look forward to.

12 shots off target 1 on. = Pardew

RM have very good eye sight. He always buy well. He will be a success at Everton.

    He is a technical manager.
He don’t make Goffy runs like a dog.
He make’s Hatem Ben Arfa a magician.

The team will play good win-able football under him…
just too bad we have got Pardew that does the opposite.

  • 267 MacToon // Apr 12, 2014 at 5:24 PM

B&B, I think your question has been answered, not like Ciaran to ever shirk an opinion ;-)
I’d imagine official policy tends to stem from official sites rather than a footy blog for, what seems like, people outside of the area whether expats or faraway fans.
NB Not exclusively expats and faraway fans though.

  • 268 davis_toons // Apr 12, 2014 at 5:26 PM

5th? How did we get there though?

By the help of some other teams?
