Newcastle have been linked with Arsenal striker Joel Campbell over the past two months, and there was some press over the weekend that suggests that Newcastle are moving in and trying to sign the player.
Joel Campbell – 21 year-old striker on loan at Olympiacos
Joel has been on loan this season to Olympiacos, and he’s had a good season there, and in all competitions he’s played 39 games and scored 12 goals and has 12 assists – which isn’t a bad record at all.
The 21 year-old Costa Rican International was signed by Arsenal in August of 2011, but he failed to get a work permit to play in England, and so was sent out on loan to French club Lorient for that season.
The next season he was sent on loan to Spanish club Real Betis, and this season, as we mentioned, he has been at top Greek side Olympiacos, and last summer he was granted a work permit to play in England.
While at Lorient he scored three goals in 25 appearances, and in Spain at Real Betis he scored only two goals in 32 appearances, but he seems to have come on well this season and he’s still only 21.
It’s likely that Arsenal will allow the youngster to leave in the summer, and with Papiss Cisse maybe the only striker Newcastle will retain this summer, and that’s not even a certainty – we need a number of  goal-scorers brought into the club over the summer months – and the sooner the better.
Campbell has 31 caps for Costa Rica and 9 international goals, and he can play as an out-and-out striker or out on the wing.
What do you think?

Comment #1We’ll only be in the driving set until a big club comes in for him, or until Mr Ashley baulks at his wages!
Even if we do get him, what will Mr Pardew do to his talent?

I hope we rebuild during the summer; starting with the management team.
Bring in some english players and some experience. Let’s ged rid of the players who don’t want to be here.
I’d like to see Hangaland, Micah richards, Fraser Forster to come back (if we sell Krul to Milan), Caulker, Danny Ings (Sean Dyche as manager??). I’d be happy with quality french players (Grenier, Cabella) but somewhere along this line, we’ve lost our identity.

A quote from Wenger re Campbell
“Now he is at Olympiacos and he has learned the toughness of the European leagues. I will decide [his future] later, but why not? We bought him to bring him here.”
Plus they are also in a position where they will be short on strikers in the summer, with Bendtner gone and Giroud looking like he will be peddled.

Comment #7I thought that the article that Turkish posted a link to was interesting a Toon fan confronting Elliot in a club. Not really surprised that Elliot backs Percy. What annoyed me was the comment that every Toon fan thinks we should be in the CL. I’ve supported the Toon for many years longer than Elliot has years on earth and I do not think we have a right to be in the CL – although I would love for us to be regular competitors.
This seems to be a bunker mentality from Elliot – against the fans. His comment about Benny -were totally unprofessional.
Elliot was at Charlton and a neighbour of Percy – he is a poor keeper -always has the look of a wobbly jelly to me -however it is of no surprise that he is backing Percy -when Percy goes -Elliot will also be away back to Cockneyland.

Comment #8Where in your article have you one shred of evidence that this might be true. It’s like you decide to randomly link us with players to fill space and generate hits. You wouldn’t see nufc.com do it and nufcblog.com, from being the first page I visited every hour is now the page I visit once a month..

Comment #10He’s played 29 scored 8 in the Greek top league for runaway leaders.
Abeid has played 28 and scored 7 in the same league for a worse team. He has done this from midfield too. And it didn’t take him three seasons to get to this level.

Comment #11If we’ve really got a kitty we could attract a good manager. Why let this clown spend it.
Another thing potential managers will like is that we don’t sack managers every three months like Sunderland or other clubs.
Rangnick, Laudrup, Hoddle, Rosler, & Rene Girard are good choices.

Comment #12Campbell – A 4th choice striker at the most. Two top quality hitmen is what we really need AND a very good striker as a third choice. Then we can bring in Gouffran and an emerging Armstrong (if he’s good enough) behind them, when things get a little desperate.
Sounds like an awful lot of players to buy when you consider we ALSO need a superb midfield creator and a good winger (or two)…. and that’s not forgetting a top central defender.
This is all assuming that we MUST replace Cabaye, our three current strikers all go, we sell Marveaux, Jonas and Obertan, Colo goes back to his homeland and Taylor just bu****s off to whoever will have him.
….. and that’s not to say that Krul and Debuchy might not fly the coop and will need to be replaced.
All that recruitment with actual proper money might see the end of Ashley as it could break his heart in pieces.
The alternative is we buy nowt and say hello to the Boros and Charltons of this world in 12 months time.
It’s gonna be interesting to say the least.

Comment #15Hardly gets my fire going, Ed. Once upon a time (like when we were 5th) I had grandiose notions of competing with Arsenal. When I look at the likes of Chelski with 27 players out ON LOAN and having concluded a deal for Costa, I begin to think maybe MonsterMash is right to keep his powder dry and operate the club under the radar in an unambitious 2nd tier. We are so far off the pace in every respect.
