There are reports coming out of L’Equipe in France, that Newcastle are interested in signing Montpellier midfielder Benjamin Stambouli, and he a fairly versatile player and can also play in defense.
Benjamin Stambouli – Newcastle interested in midfielder/defender
In a recent interview with Midi Libre, Montpellier Chairman Louis Nicollin confirmed that both Benjamin Stambouli and Remy Cabella will be leaving the club at the end of the season.
Stambouli is under contract only until next summer, and Cabella has two years left on his contract at the French club.
The 23 year-old defensive midfielder was born in Marseilles, and he has played 105 times for Montpellier with 3 goals and five assists, and it’s the only club he has ever played for.
He signed on at Montpellier in March of 2010, and he made his professional debut in a league match against Bordeaux a week later.
The 5’11” tall midfielder is valued at €3.5M on the web-site transfermarkt.com, and that’s around £2.8M, and that fee could be even lower given he has just one year to run on his contract.
He can play equally well in midfield or in defense, and maybe it’s his versatility that has Newcastle interested in the right footed player.
But L’Equipe are also reporting that other clubs are also interested in the player, and they include his home town club Marseilles, Nice, Everton, Lyon and Saint Etienne.
Stambouli has played 14 times for the French U21 side from 2010 through 2012.
