Newcastle In New Striker Crisis

Shola Ameobi, Loic Remy and Luuk de Jong will all leave Newcastle in the summer for different reasons – Shola’s contract is up and will not be renewed, Loic will join a bigger club when his loan deal ends, and Luuk de Jong hasn’t proved himself good enough to get a permanent deal at Newcastle when loan spell from Borussia Monchengladbach ends.

Papiss Cisse – out until August

And so the only striker we thought we would keep is Papiss Cisse, but the Senegal striker has broken his knee-cap in Saturday’s game,  and could well miss pre-season – so basically all four of our current strikers will not be available for pre-season.

That was the news yesterday, and Cisse will have surgery to repair the damage to his knee, and it’s almost certain he will not be fit when pre-season starts in early July.

Papiss will miss some or all of pre-season, but that means he will hardly be match fit for the opening Premier League games of the season in August.

And with the long-term injury, it becomes unlikely that some club will come in and want to pay the £10M that owner Mike Ashley would take, to let him join another club.

Papiss was linked heavily in January with Turkish clubs Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor, but it’s unlikely they will want to sign Papiss until he’s fully fit.

So the pressure now is really on Lee Charnley and our transfer team,  to bring in at least two strikers before pre-season training starts in early July.

We’ll just have to wait and see if they can get the job done in the summer.
