With the news yesterday that Newcastle have been offered Monaco striker Emmanuel Riviere for around £4.5M, and apparently we are not interested in the Frenchman – it reminded us of another striker we were offered last summer for £5M and we turned him down too.
Alfred Finnbogason – Heerenveen and Iceland striker
That was 25 year-old Alfred Finnbogason of Heerenveen, who has been capped 21 times with four goals for Iceland.
Alfred has been having another very good season in the Eredivisie, and in 32 games this season he has scored 29 goals, and since joining Heerenveen from Lokeren almost two years ago, he has 57 goals in 67 appearances for his Dutch club.
Of course the Dutch league is nowhere near the standard of the Premier League, and Luuk de Jong is having trouble scoring goals in both the Bundesliga and the Premier League after Leaving FC Twente in 2001 for £12.5M, when Newcastle were outbid by Borussia Monchengladbach.
In the Bundesliga he has 8 goals in 45 appearances for Borussia Monchengladbach, and in the Premier League he has yet to score after 11 appearances for the Magpies – so 8 goals in 55 appearances after leaving the Dutch League is not good for a striker.
And that was after he had scored 59 goals in 119 appearances, when he played three seasons at FC Twente from 2009 through 2012.
We’ve been linked with Finnbogason since last summer, and his goal-scoring record is better than Luuk’s was in the Eredivisie, but it’s still not clear whether he remains a Newcastle target for the summer, and whether Newcastle think he could make the grade on Tyneside.
We’re not sure how much Alfred would cost but maybe around £6M – if that.
What do you think?
