Is This Prolific Eredivisie Striker A Newcastle Target?

With the news yesterday that Newcastle have been offered Monaco striker Emmanuel Riviere for around £4.5M, and apparently we are not interested in the Frenchman – it reminded us of another striker we were offered last summer for £5M and we turned him down too.

Alfred Finnbogason closeup+kI2zvgIj2zGm

Alfred Finnbogason – Heerenveen and Iceland striker

That was 25 year-old Alfred Finnbogason of Heerenveen, who has been capped 21 times with four goals for Iceland.

Alfred has been having another very good season in the Eredivisie,  and in 32 games this season he has scored 29 goals, and since joining Heerenveen from Lokeren almost two years ago, he has 57 goals in 67 appearances for his Dutch club.

Of course the Dutch league is nowhere near the standard of the Premier League, and Luuk de Jong is having trouble scoring goals in both the Bundesliga and the Premier League  after Leaving FC Twente in 2001 for £12.5M, when Newcastle were outbid by Borussia Monchengladbach.

In the Bundesliga he has 8 goals in 45 appearances for Borussia Monchengladbach, and in the Premier League he has yet to score after 11 appearances for the Magpies – so 8 goals in 55 appearances after leaving the Dutch League is not good for a striker.

And that was after he had scored 59 goals in 119 appearances, when he played three seasons at FC Twente from 2009 through 2012.

We’ve been linked with Finnbogason since last summer, and his goal-scoring record is better than Luuk’s was in the Eredivisie, but it’s still not clear whether he remains a Newcastle target for the summer, and whether Newcastle think he could make the grade on Tyneside.

We’re not sure how much Alfred would cost but maybe around £6M – if that.

What do you think?

mag, no one is disputing what Joe did for us, but Sir Bobby was a great ambassador for the entire region, Sir Bobby did not win any silverware for us but as I said in terms of what both brought to football overall and the legacy left by both men then Sir Bobby was the better of the 2, you are looking solely at what they done for Newcastle, I’m looking at a larger picture.

We won’t buy him, so it doesn’t matter.

Will probably call Kuqi out of retirement.

Pointless signing anyone if Pards is still the manager.

    Ibiza:

To your question yesterday mate on HBA, one of my mates is in constant contact with the French lads as his company supplies translators to the toon. HBA was wanted by BR at Liverpool, this is before they bought Coutinho, he refused a bigger pay deal to stay with us even though no formal offer was tabled to the club, they were allowed to talk to the player first though as we had given them permission. HBA cited his love for the city as the main reason for rejecting them, the only other place in the UK he’d prefer is London

Apparently all the French lads want out, players are told we want to build for the future and get into CL, offer players a promise of “we can certainly make it easy for you to achieve that dream by playing for us” We apparently offer these lads slightly better wages and the promise of we will sell you if and when CL teams come in for you, if you can’t achieve it with us.

Like I say this is all hearsay but make of it what you wish Ibiza

Why are you 2 arguing about who should of got a statue?

Do you really think if Joe was told he’d be getting a plaque he would of said “hey! I wanted a f*ing statue”?
No, of course not. The whole point of both the plaque and the statue is to remember what they did for us and for football itself, its not supposed to be to see who was better. I know that for alot of people a statue seems like that must mean he was better but it doesnt. Both are just about remembrance, it doesnt matter who did what. At the end of the day they both helped us/football and I think they’d both be happy for each other. Not bickering about who gets the statue and who gets the plaque…
Its to never forget them and I dont think we will.

Ok mates so we need a few new players. Maybe more than a few. Maybe we need about 8 or 9 new players. Or maybe more. Let’s see if Krul leaves, and Benny, and Remy, and De Jong, and Shola (please God), and possibly Obertan (again please), and Gosling, and Debuchy, and we’re already short of players. So….. maybe we need a nice even dozen new players. What’s the problem? We’ve built up a tremendous ownership and management group over the last 7 years so we can handle it. Oh wait…..

    Our Toon @6
I thought that at the time of the rumour about HBA and Liverpool, it was an attempt to unsettle him as he was playing well. How long ago that seems! I bet he is kicking himself now.

Of course the club entice the players with false promises and that is why Cabaye was expecting to be released promptly. I think it is fairly obvious that NUFC will struggle to bring in any further French players into the first team and this is why we are being linked more and more with other nationalities.

I would like Pardew to go.
Even accounting for the loss of Cabaye (something he would have known in advance as well as knowing there would not be a replacement) a good Manager would have been able to get by.
But also I could give my ears a rest from his inane excuses and would no longer have to put up with:-
    The final fird
    we wuz robbed
    Firty free minutes
We did not freaten their goal.
We wuz on the back foot
    Vere goal wuz offside
    etc etc
