Newcastle Make Enquiries About French Manager

9:35 am, Friday, May 9th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 29 Comments

There is news in the French press today that Newcastle have approached 47 year-old Saint Etienne coach Christophe Galtier, with a view to hiring him in the summer.

Christophe Galtier

Christophe Galtier – St Etienne manager

Galtier has been at the French club since 2009, and this season he has them in 4th place in the French League, and 5 points behind third placed Lille.

It’s being reported in the  French newspaper L’Equipe that Newcastle have made inquiries about the 47 year-old Marseilles-born manager, who has no coaching experience outside of the French League.

Galtier has won the French League Cup with Saint-Etienne, and is out of contract at the end of the season, and of course Newcastle are always after staff – and it looks like it included managers – that they have to pay little for.

Alan Pardew and his coaches have a huge six years left on their contracts at Newcastle,  but we’re almost sure that there will be some cancellation clause in the contract – say to pay one year’s wages if dismissed – because Ashley is far too savvy in the financial world not to have put something like that in Pardew’s contract.

In our poll 80% of fans would like Alan Pardew to be replaced this summer, and there have been demonstrations at the last three Newcastle games calling for the manager to be fired – but also the demonstrations have been against owner Mike Ashley himself.

This would seem like a huge risk for Newcastle, because Galtier is simply unproven in the Premier League, and it’s a huge step up in both quality and intensity, than managing in the French League.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Even Ed is reporting it now, it must be true . lol !!!

I would be delirious if this happened. Could never understand why with a virtual French squad we didn’t have a french manager but chose instead to employ a cockney grunt. No rhyming slang intended!

well he did win the cup and finish 4th in the league. But then again it’s the French league and he did have quite a good squad. I don’t think he’s better then Pardew. If we switch manager we should really try and get someone better. Not happening though.

who at the club thinks this is the man for the job
with only pards carr and the other fella whose name escapes me
Ashley likethe rest of us would never of heard of this bloke
that’s not saying he wont be an improvement on what we have

but I still think it wont happen

    Cyprus regarding Montella

Yes, he will come. As I said hijacking means give him more money like double or tripple his wage.
It’s much cheaper giving him tripple and let him find his own transfer budget (or at best 10million), rather than buying players and keeping pardew as manager.

The end result will be cheaper and more profit, surely finishing 8th or 6th is better than 10th or 16th.

ED says it will be a risk because he has not managed in PL.

    LOL

Like Poccetino, Mourinho, Louis Van gaal, Wenger, Ancelotti and many others.

Cant see this happening. If anything, the club wants to go towards english players now. Although at least that manager probably isnt on a big salary! We’ll keep Pardew, with a warning. If he is not top 10 by Christmas with better football he’ll be sacked.

  • 7 Santon03 // May 9, 2014 at 9:55 AM

keeping pardew, we buy 10 to 20million worth transfers by the end of season the value will be 5 to 10 or free. The only one that gone up probably the value of goalkeeper.

for me the key is can he push players on, motivate them and get results .. he’s proved that at St Etienne, Aubemyange etc (excuse the spelling)
The only unknown for me is will an ex defender play more attacking or passing football, I’ve not watched enough of St Etienne to tell..

Himanshu you do talk some bollocks. I think he means that he is not a proven coach , aswell as no english experience. So Van Gaal etc not relevant. The future is Pardew. But if we dont get a decent central midfelder Pardew is goosed and so are we.

  • 19 Lilongwe Geordie // May 9, 2014 at 10:05 AM

    Sweendog,
Why is Frank De Boer less of a risk?? This talk of him keeps baffling me. He has done well with Ajax, where let’s face it, most of their managers do well. People say he develops players, but, again, he is at Ajax, they have been doing that since before he came through as a player so there are huge unknowns on De Boer.

what I know about this guy is that he’s an attacking pressing style manager.

when in possession he attacks when not he presses, it’s also been quoted he has a similar style to Guordiola ( spelling )

I would take him in a shot, if anyone could get the best out of HBA and the rest of the French lads it’s him

  • 25 HullMag6 // May 9, 2014 at 10:12 AM

Might work in the short term, but unless Mike Ashley loosens the purse strings we’ll be back here again calling for the new guy’s head after a couple of seasons.

  • 26 hadthetshirt // May 9, 2014 at 10:23 AM

Maybe ashley has asked our French lads who they would recommend.I know its ashley were talking about. He has to be an improvement on pardwho

  • 27 Geordiedoonsooth // May 9, 2014 at 11:07 AM

Just shows that Ashley & co. don’t have a clue about our club and what it means we need someone who knows the area and the passion of the people. I am sick of all of them give us our club back.

If this is true, I guess it is Graham Carr’s choice.
