There is news in the French press today that Newcastle have approached 47 year-old Saint Etienne coach Christophe Galtier, with a view to hiring him in the summer.
Christophe Galtier – St Etienne manager
Galtier has been at the French club since 2009, and this season he has them in 4th place in the French League, and 5 points behind third placed Lille.
It’s being reported in the French newspaper L’Equipe that Newcastle have made inquiries about the 47 year-old Marseilles-born manager, who has no coaching experience outside of the French League.
Galtier has won the French League Cup with Saint-Etienne, and is out of contract at the end of the season, and of course Newcastle are always after staff – and it looks like it included managers – that they have to pay little for.
Alan Pardew and his coaches have a huge six years left on their contracts at Newcastle, but we’re almost sure that there will be some cancellation clause in the contract – say to pay one year’s wages if dismissed – because Ashley is far too savvy in the financial world not to have put something like that in Pardew’s contract.
In our poll 80% of fans would like Alan Pardew to be replaced this summer, and there have been demonstrations at the last three Newcastle games calling for the manager to be fired – but also the demonstrations have been against owner Mike Ashley himself.
This would seem like a huge risk for Newcastle, because Galtier is simply unproven in the Premier League, and it’s a huge step up in both quality and intensity, than managing in the French League.
