One reason Clement Grenier did not want to make a move to Newcastle in January, was that he wanted to stay at Lyon to try to make the French World Cup squad, and when Didier Deschamps announced the 23 man squad last night Grenier made it, and rather surprisingly, Manchester City’s Samir Nasri was left out.
Clement Grenier – made French World Cup squad
With Newcastle failing to get Grenier to Tyneside in January, we could now face tough competition from bigger clubs for Grenier, and that task is not helped by him making the French squad.
And if he does have a good World Cup for France, then Newcastle’s chances of getting the player could be reduced significantly.
The 23 year-old would be a terrific replacement for Yohan Cabaye, who also made the squad, and Clement has excellent vision, creativity, and he’s great at taking free kicks – not unlike Yohan Cabaye.
Newcastle’s Mathieu Debuchy and Moussa Sissoko also made the squad, as did on-loan striker Loic Remy.
Last season the 6’1″ attacking midfielder played 40 times for Lyon in all competitions, with 7 goals and 7 assists.
As we said, this lad would be a great signing for Newcastle, if only we can get him to Tyneside this summer.
