Newcastle Targeting Some Top English Players

At this time of year it’s always difficult to know just what the players are who Newcastle United are really after, but we’ve certainly been linked with a number of very good Englishmen this summer already.

Andros Townsend

Andros Townsend – Tottenham winger linked with Newcastle

Newcastle have been linked this weekend with both Jack Rodwell  and James Milner of Manchester City, who are likely to leave to get more playing time elsewhere, and to help Manchester City balance their books more quickly.

Young winger Tom Ince of Blackpool is available this summer as a free agent, and so is another top young winger –  Wilfried Zaha of Manchester United – who impressed for Cardiff during our 3-0 home win a couple of weeks ago.

We have linked with both players and Newcastle are also supposed to be after Tottenham’s Andros Townsend, who had a good early start to the campaign last season and played well for England too but has dropped down the pecking order at Spurs.

And Newcastle seem to be after another full-back this summer, and we are said to be interested in 22 year-old Arsenal right-back Carl Jenkinson and 24 year-old Ipswich left back Aaron Cresswell – both Englishmen.

Newcastle also remain interested in Derby County’s top young English U21 International central midfielder Aaron Hughes, who we were said to also be after last summer.

But if Derby beat QPR in the Championship play-off final at Wembley next Saturday,  it would be very unlikely they would want to sell one of their best players when moving back into the Premier League.

Newcastle have also been after 25 year-old English International Micah Richards of Manchester City, as we try to improve the defense, which has conceded 124 goals over the last two seasons in the Premier League, which is simply not good enough.

So there’s nine English players we have been linked with this summer – but it’s one thing to be interested in a player and it’s another thing completely to get them to Tyneside, as Joe Kinnear found out during his ill-fated tenure as Newcastle’s Director of Football.

We are hoping Lee Charnley will be able to get some top English players to the club this summer, and since we are supposed to wrap up our business in the transfer window before the World Cup starts, we should be hearing of our first summer signing shortly.

Comments welcome.

We can target them but how many will join?
Why choose a club that dont pay the wages and wont compete for anything.
A mid table drudge at best to follow with a manager despised by fans.
This will rumble all summer with non being dragged over the mithical “line”

@toon22: You’ve got it all wrong, mate. The players want to join, it’s just that the line keeps being moved by the North East media. Those bar stewards.

Problem with targeting these players at Man U, spurs, Man City etc means they are already on big money wages which i cannot see us even getting close to.
Milner – he has had the nufc experience and got pretty fu*ked off from what i remember with the on off Villa transfer – couldn’t get away quick enough

I see we’re in that silly season again…Milner would never come back here even if there was a regime change…if he goes anywhere it’ll be to a club with ambition and playing European football because he is that good and it’s only right he plays at that level.

Jack rodwell…far too good an ambitious for us

Andros Townsend…England international coming to newcastle to progress his career?…you’re having a laf!

It does my fruit in when Ed puts up sh!te like this…newcastle are now regarded by most as a pariah club after they came out and re-iterated the model yet again…

No older players with experience to help the kids
No-one earning over 40k a week after Colo goes home.
Buy cheap and sell high…forget ambition
Don’t come to newcastle if you have any aspirations to win anything.
Profit always comes first and everyone has a price.
Don’t come here if you play the beautiful game that way it should be played…the manager only wants plodding workhorses who love defensive duties.

The owner wants the fans to suffer and being the shrewdest of negotiators all he’s doing is setting us up ready to sell so he can buy Rangers.

We simply have to sit this one out and wait for it to happen because irrespective of how small the squad will become over the summer, we will fail to get anyone of note over that b@st@rd line.

…and the only reason we’re getting nearer that time is

    a) the timing is perfect to buy rangers next summer with a bigger slice of the club being bought this summer

    b) the new premiership money and all transfer profits are not being re-invested in the club…it’s all going into his big deep pockets so he can sell next summer at a half decent profit having clawed back 200 million in the meanwhile.

so lads…divvent worry…only a year of this sh!te to go or until he gets an offer he’s happy with in the meanwhile.

The only players Newcastle will be able to sign are players from lower leagues who want to play in the premier league and use the club as a stepping stone to better more ambitious clubs, and foreign player for the same reasons.

Even then after the recent admission of having no ambition by the club we will be last choice for all players wanting a move.

    rorally agree with toon22.
This club has bcome the laughing stock amongst other prem league fans.
I think we could be a cert for the drop if this tight fisted trend carries o thru into the the summer.
Why would any decent ambition player want to join us?
Can anyone really give a good answer to that,i doubt it.

We can target these players as much as we like but if they’re keen to win things, they’d be better going to a bigger club such as Sunderland, Hull City, Swansea.

I don’t get it. If we’re trying to buy all of those English players, or even some of them, we’re not showing ambition?

Surely attempting to by players of Milner’s quality shows something in the way of ambition.

Yet again, we’ll have to wait and see if the club holds up its end of the deal in this transfer window. I’ll hold of any comments on a further lack of ambition until I see how we get on in the transfer market. Of course, I’ll not hold my breath too much, but I’m not going to get angry about it before then.
