It’s not the first time that Newcastle have been linked with Stoke City center-back and former Manchester United youngster Ryan Shawcross this summer, and there’s a story in the Mail today that PL Champions Manchester City and Newcastle are interested in signing the player.
Ryan Shawcross – Newcastle interested
Shawcross was Stoke City’s Player of the Season, so why would manager Mark Hughes ever want to sell his top center-back, especially when the club have just finished 9th top of the league.
That’s their best ever finish in the Premier League – in Mark Hughes’ first season, and they edged out Newcastle in the last game – when we lost again at Liverpool, and Stoke won at West Brom – who finished 4th bottom.
One possible advantage Newcastle would have over Manchester City in trying to get Shawcross, is that we could offer Ryan a regular place in the Newcastle back four, and after leaking another 59 goals last season and 65 goals the season before, we really need to bring in some new defenders this summer.
And Ryan is both English and has Premier League experience, which are two factors Alan Pardew has stressed to the Board, as to the type of players he wants brought in this summer, Ryan has played 284 times with 20 goals over the last seven seasons for Stoke, and he has one England cap,
Newcastle need to bring in another center-back this season to strengthen our woeful defense.
And if we can get one in early we may let either Steven Taylor or Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa leave the club in the summer transfer window. And it would probably be the Frenchman, who hasn’t been able to get to grips with play in the Premier League for the last eighteen months.
The price for Shawcross is said to £12M, but we still think Stoke would turn that offer down, because Mark Hughes wants to build on the good season Stoke have just had, and bring more good players in – and not let his best player leave.
Something that another club did not do in January.
Comments welcome.

Comment #2Don’t see this happening, Stoke will want top money, other clubs will be interested. And is he really that good? If he couldn’t make the England squad (given the dearth of decent English CBs) you have to question how good he is

Comment #3Yeah 12milliom never going to happen. Just guessing but all these english players we’re being linked with are likely pardew ahem scouting gems. In a way I’m glad the board have the final say on all “transfers” or we would just be pulis stoke mark 2.

Comment #6Bloody hell another player we have been linked with.
Has anyone counted up the number of players we have been interested in signing since the end of the season – must be nearing 50

But now he’s the main man responsible. Sure, he might have been involved before but surely he’s got more responsibilities now in that area. The buck stops with him now.
We’ve got to give the new guy a chance. No point in assuming that everyone working for the club is tainted with the same issues that Ashley is.

Comment #8What in the last year has pointed to Ashley learning from past mistakes exactly?
I have no doubt we will make a couple of signings, a couple of squad fillers looking for a second chance after not making it at there clubs, basically a couple of Obertans!

He’s not a new man at the helm, his role hasn’t really changed it’s been confirmed numerous times that he’s always been involved in transfer negotiations
Not denying PEA wanted CL the point was once again we didn’t have a plan B just like we didn’t when we missed out on Remy the first time round

You’re very generous with your ” top ” labels.
Shawcross is a thug but if you want a Kilcline ”no nonsense” type I guess he fits, but he’s hardly a ball playing type blessed with pace and skill.

His job was always to negotiate and green light the fee/ wages
Don’t think it matters that he’s the “main man” now, his given his mission statement, it was identical to the one that was prepped for JFK

But whose role is it now to line up the players and make the final decision on who to sign. Not JFK, that’s for sure.
Why just assume a negative stance despite things having changed? Why not hope that the new guy will have a different way of working and he’ll have learned from the mistakes of his predecessors?
People always say that Ashley cares more about SD and no doubt he spends more of his time doing SD business than NUFC business, so there’s plenty of room for everyone else at the club to do things rightly or wrongly.

What’s changed?
They’ve got rid of JFK, the fans wanted a new DoF ash didn’t want to go out and get an experienced football man, so he appointed the next one in the pecking order
The procedures are still the same, the scouting set up is still the same, the mission statement is still the same
So what’s changed?

So why would you assume others would learn from theirs?

you are correct the only thing that has changed is there is a link less in the chain (carr/jfk/pards/jfk/charn/ashley/charn/jfk)
now its (carr/charn/pard/charn/ash/charn) maybe with more responsibility on the higher up maybe things may move along a lot faster !

Comment #25Average_Contents @21 – When you get to Mike Ashley’s level you simply wouldn’t have enough time to be consulted on every decision – that is why you employ managers, executives etc. No doubt he will have set targets, limits, constraints etc. but they will make the decisions within these boundaries.

Given the short length of time he was here, i highly doubt JFK had FA to do with negotiations really
Jobs for the boys etc
This is also the same team that failed to strengthen upon European qualification leading MA to take over the Jan deals
Can’t see what the big change is to warrant the ” give him another window………yet again” attitude to suddenly think a quiet accountant promoted to the role through the owners admitted lack of knowledge about how the football world works will burst into life
1-2 signings per calendar year, that’s his mission statement

Comment #27When it comes to transfers I think we need stop looking at targets we’d all like and instead judge them on if they are an upgrade on what we have! Shawcross has been twice the defender of any of our centrebacks for 2 seasons! Anyone that watched stoke this year would see they passed it out from the back and shawcross is decent on the ball! Came through the Fergie youth teams and they teach ball skills!
Not a noble fan! Not at all! But hes a step up from Gosling and although hes not as good as tiote hes a damn site more consistent! We all want the greniers, cabellas etc but lets be happy aslong as we’re signing players that are better than what we have because thats more than weve done for 2 years

Comment #29Ashley most likely won’t change his overall strategy but he might take some measures to make it work a bit better.

Comment #30Cabella’s club want nearly double what Ashley has offered. Ashley knows the bid will be rejected. He is just tagging us along like list puppies. He wants free and cheap players through the door like Colback, Gomes and Perez and he wants to sell his own players for mega bucks. If he could sell the soul of NUFC, it would have been sold down the Tyne a long time ago. There is no way on this earth Ashley will go to 13 million for Cabella. I ain’t seen enough of Cabella if I am honest to judge whether he is worth that much but at least bid somewhere near the bloody asking price. We are way off agreeing for Cabella from what I have read.

Comment #35Both Shawcross and Noble are solid EPL players entering their best years. I’d be delighted with either or both and more importantly they are Pardew type players, you’d think. Give him the players he wants and judge him fairly. Those two, a top striker and a winger. That’s it, that’s his team, set him a target of top eight.

We just need better coaching and to hold onto the damn ball for longer than 5 minutes per game to take some pressure off the back 4.

Comment #37Not exactly sure what people expect as shawcross would be a great signing.
And those of you having a go at the club not paying 14million for cabella need a reality check.
A player no one really on here has seen play regularly. A player never capped by his country and a player who’s never played outside of the French league. I wouldn’t be risking my 14 million either!!
It’s only the start of negotiations. Jesus, get a grip!!!

Cabella has an agreement with Montepellier that will allow him to leave this summer. So if Cabella wants Newcastle then he gets Newcastle. That’s the situation. Montepellier won’t charge more than they did for Giroud and Belhanda. The papers was way off on the Mbiwa fee as well.

Comment #40Toon1978 @30 – You have to expect some negotiation on price – after all we apparently wanted £25m for Cabaye but PSG negotiated the price down to just over £20m and they are a moneybags club. No doubt they probably started at about £15m so it is quite normal. Besides we don’t know how accurate or true these reported bids are.
