Newcastle United are back in for Bafetimbi Gomis, according to the Mail, and he was our number one transfer target last summer, but we still failed to sign him.
Bafe Gomis – Newcastle on the trail again
Bafe is a free agent when his contract runs out at the end of June, but he will turn 29 in August, and there was always going to be a question if he was too old for Newcastle, who like to sign players around 26 years old and younger.
One of the reasons Newcastle failed to sign the player last summer was that his agents were asking too much to close the deal, but now it seems he is represented by Scottish agent Willie McKay, which should make things easier.
The other reason was the inability of Joe Kinnear to get anything done – but Lee Charnley is now in charge of transfers at the club, and he has a good record for getting things done.
There is supposed to be interest in the player from both West Ham and Turkish club Galatasaray, but if Newcastle move quickly, and they have really decided they want him, Newcastle should be able to get this player signed.
Gomis has had a good five years at Lyon, and last season scored 17 goals in 34 appearances for Lyon in his final year at the club.
We think Gomis would be a good signing for the Magpies.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1Well, he’s an upgrade on Shola, but not by much. I sincerely hope and pray that he is not the pinacle of our striker recruitment ambitions.
That would have to be considered a real smack in the chops!!!

Comment #7From the mirror so highly unlikely, plus it’s us we are talking about…
as if we’d offer ANYBODY that sort of dosh!
Newcastle have offered Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis £85,000 a week – but the Frenchman is demanding a whopping £100,000 weekly salary.

Comment #15He is rubbish. Only Pardew would be dumb enough to sign such garbage.
I would go for Lacazette though.
We should try and get Stamboli; he is very good and versatile. He would give more dynamism to our midfield. He wants to leave his club as well which is a good thing.

He used to be called baby drogba so that makes him twice the player that Shola is. Lets face it, even a 10yr old plays better than Strolla

Comment #23I think Carr needs to leave before he gets bombarded by the cockney tw@ts who think they know more about football than us.
I also hope Cabella doesn’t come here, he will be wasted here and like his manager and chairmen says Newcastle are not a good club to go to
looked what happened to Mbiwa he’s an top young defender and he’s sitting on the bench and is behind Taylor!?

Comment #27Newcastle must offer Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis £100,000 per week if they want to sign him this summer. The 28-year-old becomes a free agent next month.

Comment #28Very unlikely with those wage demands. I think Newcastle need to give their fans a top 8 side, anything less is not good enough, but if a player of Gomis’ not all together top class stature can demand 80 000 or more a week and a 5 year contract and clubs like West Ham and QPR will give him it, we are in a bind know matter how hard we clamour for more.
It’s a tough ask, but still, they have to find a way to get the quality in. That’s the remit, that’s what the fans pay for and rightly expect.

Comment #33Im not sold on Gomiz.
We should move heaven and earth for Lacazette though. I’ve been a fan of his for a while.
We need pace and attacking options.. Townsend, Zaha, Ince, Lacazette, Cabella.
I also think Cisse will improve if the service does. He good on the volley and all those players can cross a ball… something we sorely lack.

Comment #34Sissoko to Monaco? That would be another big moey windfall for the club, but Newcastle NEED to have players to step in when these deals happen. No replacement for Carroll, Ba, or Cabaye for a half a season. All crucial players. That amounts to three lost seasons from a fans perspective, the majority season ticket holders, paying hard earned money based on hopes and expectations. You’d have to seriously question the integrity of those deals, when they go through without adequate replacement.

Comment #35There is no point looking at age, too old to play, age policy if we care about resale value. If the player is good and consistent then the value will go up.
Just look at Cisse, he is still young but his resale value will not be as high as when we bought him. Look at Luuk DeJong, will anyone buy him at the same price as Moenchengladbag bought him, I don’t think so.
Look at Pirlo, he is 35, I bet there are still a lot of big club willing to pay huge wage for his service, Ibra was going to be 30 years old when he moved to PSG.
If you are a very good and very consistent player, you don’t need to worry about age and resale value, because they could contribute more than young players, that’s why Chelsea signed Eto’o.

Comment #36Forget about age, just find good players. sometimes you can get very good player over 30 with good money that can contribute more than young players, they have something that young players don’t, it’s experience playing under pressure.
I bet if Filippo Inzaghi still playing (40yrs old), he would score more goals than Cisse last season.

Comment #37Santon…I think what some worry about is being stuck with a player looking for one last big pay day!
…we cannot afford to gamble too much this window. We know we won’t spend too much and Ashley counts signon fees and agent fees as spending as well.

As I said we could get good value players over 30, I’m not saying we should get Pirlo, DeRossi, Xavi, etc. Even if we want to give the big payday, they won’t come here. There are plenty good players over 30 like Gareth Barry, Huntelaar, Essien, etc.
Usually the ones who look for big pay day go to MLS.

Comment #40If we want to sign a lot of young players, I would rather we sign good players over 30 as well (3 or 4 players). They can give more contributions to their development than what our coaches give.
