Newcastle Back In For Top French Striker

11:08 pm, Wednesday, May 21st, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 57 Comments

Newcastle United are back in for Bafetimbi Gomis, according to the Mail, and he was our number one transfer target last summer, but we still failed to sign him.

bafetimbi gomis - pink

Bafe Gomis – Newcastle on the trail again

Bafe is a free agent when his contract runs out at the end of June, but he will turn 29 in August, and there was always going to be a question if he was too old for Newcastle, who like to sign players around 26 years old and younger.

One of the reasons Newcastle failed to sign the player last summer was that his agents were asking too much to close the deal, but now it seems he is represented by Scottish agent Willie McKay, which should make things easier.

The other reason was the inability of Joe Kinnear to get anything done – but Lee Charnley is now in charge of transfers at the club, and he  has a good record for getting things done.

There is supposed to be interest in the player from both West Ham and Turkish club Galatasaray, but if Newcastle move quickly, and they have really decided they want him, Newcastle should be able to get this player signed.

Gomis has had a good five years at Lyon, and last season scored 17 goals in 34 appearances for Lyon in his final year at the club.

We think Gomis would be a good signing for the Magpies.

Comments welcome.

Well, he’s an upgrade on Shola, but not by much. I sincerely hope and pray that he is not the pinacle of our striker recruitment ambitions.

That would have to be considered a real smack in the chops!!!

  • 2 GeordieTwo // May 21, 2014 at 11:20 PM

And I respect you as well Graeme.

  • 3 EbertNUFC // May 21, 2014 at 11:21 PM

He has scored a lot more goals in France than shola has here since 2006

  • 4 GeordieTwo // May 21, 2014 at 11:21 PM

    And jesper.

  • 5 GeordieTwo // May 21, 2014 at 11:21 PM

    And Ibiza sometimes.

  • 6 GeordieTwo // May 21, 2014 at 11:21 PM

    But not welshie.

  • 7 Average_Contents // May 21, 2014 at 11:25 PM

From the mirror so highly unlikely, plus it’s us we are talking about…
as if we’d offer ANYBODY that sort of dosh!

Newcastle have offered Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis £85,000 a week – but the Frenchman is demanding a whopping £100,000 weekly salary.

  • 8 welshgeordie9 // May 21, 2014 at 11:26 PM

    you mentioning my name again

    Tut tut tut

i see one of papers are saying that gomis wants £100,000 a week to join us

i think he’s sniffing petrol fumes not me

  • 9 GeordieTwo // May 21, 2014 at 11:27 PM

    Absolute pish posh A_C mate.

  • 10 GeordieTwo // May 21, 2014 at 11:29 PM

Sorry welshie. It just slipped out mate. But it’s beermonkey you really have to keep an eye out for.

  • 11 Graeme // May 21, 2014 at 11:29 PM

Welsh – aye, and pigs might fly as well. I heard there was a flock of them spotted earlier in the day also!!!

  • 12 GeordieTwo // May 21, 2014 at 11:33 PM

Why is there a picture of Gomis below that headline of Newcastle back in for top French striker? Colour me befuddled.

  • 13 Average_Contents // May 21, 2014 at 11:33 PM

Beat ya too it again boyo

  • 14 GeordieTwo // May 21, 2014 at 11:34 PM

I know pish posh when beermonkey pees on it. And he is going to pee on this rumour.

  • 15 Ashton // May 21, 2014 at 11:36 PM

He is rubbish. Only Pardew would be dumb enough to sign such garbage.

I would go for Lacazette though.

We should try and get Stamboli; he is very good and versatile. He would give more dynamism to our midfield. He wants to leave his club as well which is a good thing.

  • 16 RonVanDam // May 21, 2014 at 11:38 PM

    @Graeme 1

He used to be called baby drogba so that makes him twice the player that Shola is. Lets face it, even a 10yr old plays better than Strolla

  • 17 GeordieTwo // May 21, 2014 at 11:40 PM

Have to go lads. I can sense beermonkey creeping up behind me.

  • 18 Black and White with an army lol // May 21, 2014 at 11:46 PM

no thanks is on par with Cisse and another poacher that we don’t need.

why don’t we go all out and get young Volland I think he has a contract clause for about 13 million

  • 19 Black and White with an army lol // May 21, 2014 at 11:47 PM

or why not Andre Ayew? power & speed on the left wing and cheap since his contract will run out this year and then have Ince for backup

  • 20 Black and White with an army lol // May 21, 2014 at 11:52 PM

all the good players out there who are on the cheap and we go for rejects!

I don’t know much about this Perez guy but Iv’e seen a few clips of him and he plays similar to Remy so I guess he’s an Advance Forward which we need asap

but NOOOOOOOOOOOOO Pardew want’s target men so he can instruct the rest of the lads to hoof it up to him

  • 21 Shot Bru // May 21, 2014 at 11:53 PM

I have a feeling Hector Moreno’s name will be on the rumour mill soon.

  • 22 Brutooon // May 21, 2014 at 11:54 PM

Remy – will go back QPR
    Shola – will finally quit
Cisse – injured the whole season and won’t score again
Armstrong – AP wont play him until he is 30 years old

    So please sign Gomis!

  • 23 Black and White with an army lol // May 21, 2014 at 11:58 PM

I think Carr needs to leave before he gets bombarded by the cockney tw@ts who think they know more about football than us.

I also hope Cabella doesn’t come here, he will be wasted here and like his manager and chairmen says Newcastle are not a good club to go to

looked what happened to Mbiwa he’s an top young defender and he’s sitting on the bench and is behind Taylor!?

  • 24 Black and White with an army lol // May 22, 2014 at 12:00 AM

Gomis like Remy is an mercenary and he wants 100k a week, do you seriously want him here?

  • 25 Black and White with an army lol // May 22, 2014 at 12:05 AM

people complain about Cisse being offside all the time, imagine Cisse & Gomis up top with Gomis amongst the top 3 for being offside.

but saying that though can you go offside on the halfway line?

  • 26 Brutooon // May 22, 2014 at 12:10 AM

Black and White with an Amry lol

My point is, please sign any striker or anyone

  • 27 RonVanDam // May 22, 2014 at 12:26 AM

Newcastle must offer Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis £100,000 per week if they want to sign him this summer. The 28-year-old becomes a free agent next month.

Very unlikely with those wage demands. I think Newcastle need to give their fans a top 8 side, anything less is not good enough, but if a player of Gomis’ not all together top class stature can demand 80 000 or more a week and a 5 year contract and clubs like West Ham and QPR will give him it, we are in a bind know matter how hard we clamour for more.

It’s a tough ask, but still, they have to find a way to get the quality in. That’s the remit, that’s what the fans pay for and rightly expect.

  • 29 thai-mag // May 22, 2014 at 12:45 AM

he wants a 100,000 a week, bye bye to Gomis then

  • 30 headtheball // May 22, 2014 at 12:51 AM

I don’t know about a Top French Striker but where are all the Top businessmen when you need one? If we don’t sign anyone we will need a Top businessman to explain why it is good business. You football people know nothing.

  • 31 southafricantoon // May 22, 2014 at 1:02 AM

    I like Andre Ayew!

  • 32 toonicle // May 22, 2014 at 2:09 AM

I think Ayew would do wonders for us, and then maybe we could play Gouffran as a striker as he should be. 2 problems solved.

  • 33 Blofal // May 22, 2014 at 2:32 AM

    Im not sold on Gomiz.

We should move heaven and earth for Lacazette though. I’ve been a fan of his for a while.

We need pace and attacking options.. Townsend, Zaha, Ince, Lacazette, Cabella.

I also think Cisse will improve if the service does. He good on the volley and all those players can cross a ball… something we sorely lack.

  • 34 jimmysmith // May 22, 2014 at 2:53 AM

Sissoko to Monaco? That would be another big moey windfall for the club, but Newcastle NEED to have players to step in when these deals happen. No replacement for Carroll, Ba, or Cabaye for a half a season. All crucial players. That amounts to three lost seasons from a fans perspective, the majority season ticket holders, paying hard earned money based on hopes and expectations. You’d have to seriously question the integrity of those deals, when they go through without adequate replacement.

  • 35 Santon03 // May 22, 2014 at 6:32 AM

There is no point looking at age, too old to play, age policy if we care about resale value. If the player is good and consistent then the value will go up.
Just look at Cisse, he is still young but his resale value will not be as high as when we bought him. Look at Luuk DeJong, will anyone buy him at the same price as Moenchengladbag bought him, I don’t think so.
Look at Pirlo, he is 35, I bet there are still a lot of big club willing to pay huge wage for his service, Ibra was going to be 30 years old when he moved to PSG.
If you are a very good and very consistent player, you don’t need to worry about age and resale value, because they could contribute more than young players, that’s why Chelsea signed Eto’o.

  • 36 Santon03 // May 22, 2014 at 6:38 AM

Forget about age, just find good players. sometimes you can get very good player over 30 with good money that can contribute more than young players, they have something that young players don’t, it’s experience playing under pressure.
I bet if Filippo Inzaghi still playing (40yrs old), he would score more goals than Cisse last season.

  • 37 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // May 22, 2014 at 6:38 AM

Santon…I think what some worry about is being stuck with a player looking for one last big pay day!

…we cannot afford to gamble too much this window. We know we won’t spend too much and Ashley counts signon fees and agent fees as spending as well.

  • 38 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // May 22, 2014 at 6:44 AM

And too be clear I still don’t really care who we sign this window…it won’t change much long term!

…we will look the same very quickly! If you don’t address the problem nothing will change!

  • 39 Santon03 // May 22, 2014 at 6:59 AM

As I said we could get good value players over 30, I’m not saying we should get Pirlo, DeRossi, Xavi, etc. Even if we want to give the big payday, they won’t come here. There are plenty good players over 30 like Gareth Barry, Huntelaar, Essien, etc.

Usually the ones who look for big pay day go to MLS.

  • 40 Santon03 // May 22, 2014 at 7:09 AM

If we want to sign a lot of young players, I would rather we sign good players over 30 as well (3 or 4 players). They can give more contributions to their development than what our coaches give.

  • 41 Santon03 // May 22, 2014 at 7:09 AM

As for Sissoko, I would rather sell Tiote than Sissoko.

  • 42 bobby mango // May 22, 2014 at 7:16 AM

They’ve known about his situation for longer than us. If they wanted him they should’ve been offering a deal immediately upon him being available for pre contact negotiations, not waiting until now when other clubs are looking at him.

We’ve known how serious this window would be for months. A professional team would be deep into talks with several players / agents by now.
We still can’t decide if we want someone we targeted a year ago and is now available to free. Pathetic again.

  • 43 Santon03 // May 22, 2014 at 7:24 AM

the news last time was we already agreed with the club, but he has so many agents and we couldn’t agree with them, it was too complicated. Like Douglas and Ba situation, avoiding that kind of deal was good decision imo.

  • 44 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // May 22, 2014 at 7:28 AM

Even players like Barry, Huntelaar or Essien will want huge signon and agent fees.

In my expetience signing these kind of players should be last resort or to sort out a temp prob.

Doesn’t mean of course that we could sign a player past his prime worth our while. Just wouldn’t be where I would start looking.

  • 45 Santon03 // May 22, 2014 at 7:29 AM

This transfer window, tbh I prefer signing loan players with option to buy. It seems they work harder than permanent signings and less risk rather than signing permanently then they turned out to be another Obertan, Marv, Gosling and get stuck with them for years.

  • 47 Santon03 // May 22, 2014 at 7:32 AM

loan players is like test drive.

  • 48 Santon03 // May 22, 2014 at 7:35 AM

Schalke got through CL quarter final when they had Raul. I know it’s just one example and it doesn’t always worked but having just young players also didn’t work so well for us.

  • 49 Santon03 // May 22, 2014 at 7:38 AM

I’m wondering what happen with Amalfitano.

  • 50 cyprus // May 22, 2014 at 7:42 AM

I’ll reiterate my concern: can Pardew get the players to play as a team? Can he develop them?

Unfortunately, despite the fact that to his immense credit he admits he’s learning, it would seem that the answer is no.
He has repeatedly claimed that we play on the front foot when we almost never do.
No two players have seemed to gel together or work in tandem to make things happen. It’s often like they just met: Cisse making moves no one follows, no clever runs or combos.
Our set plays are nothing but disastrous. We never expect to score from them. At least, I would expect them to try different things until something finally works.
In almost ALL our games, we look like the worst team on the pitch, even when we scrape a win.

I honestly thought AP would’ve been gone by now, because I think his position is untenable: a couple more thumpings (and they’re guaranteed, we do those) and he will have to go. He’s really walking on thin ice. If, at least, we played attractive football, he’d have a chance.

  • 51 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // May 22, 2014 at 7:44 AM

I wouldn’t say Raul was a huge success in Schalke?

  • 52 Jail for Ashley // May 22, 2014 at 7:44 AM

Alfalmalaltino will slip back to the type of unknown French team he came from.

  • 53 cyprus // May 22, 2014 at 7:45 AM

loan players with a pre-agreed option to buy (number dependent on performance) is a great idea for now. Because when AP goes (see above) the new manager will need 50 mil. to do his thing.

  • 54 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // May 22, 2014 at 7:47 AM

Santon…it doesn’t mean there are no bargains to made in term of players +30, it’s just not where I would be starting.

If as a loan then fine.

  • 55 Santon03 // May 22, 2014 at 8:18 AM

You can’t deny that Raul has no influence on their success. Schalke reached quarter for the first time when he was there, Raul had big impact there and Schalke fans begged him not to go.

so.. it’s the same when we had xisco

I know players can lose their consistency and form, but Cisse has lost it for 2 seasons and pardew can’t restore him like in his 1st season.
I don’t know what really happen in the training sessions, but noone has improved except Willo.
Our coaches or pardew or both of them have failed, good players with big experience are needed to lift them in training and matches, they can be someone to look up to and lift their spirits up, good experience players definitely have more to teach than our coaches. We should able to take advantages from set pieces and we are the worst team in set piece (direct or indirect), what they do in training have a lot more effect than player’s quality.

  • 56 bobby mango // May 22, 2014 at 8:46 AM

Santon – I’ve no issue with calling of the deal last time. My issue is with waiting until now to start it up again.
The report gives me the impression we’ve only just decided we want him again (maybe after Bent turned out to be a no go).

  • 57 Harley // May 22, 2014 at 8:47 AM

You say no players have improved under pardew.

Ba and Cabaye were sold at huge profits after playing some if their best football under him.

Krul, santon, debuchy, sissokho and tiote would all be sold for huge profits.

Williamson had his best season under pardew, colo had his best season under pardew, Remy has just had a great season attracting attention from big clubs.

As usual I’m not saying pardew is a great manager but your claims are rubbish!!
