Newcastle’s First Summer Signing Almost Tied Up

8:52 am, Wednesday, May 21st, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 31 Comments

There’s some confusion as to whether 20 year-old Spanish striker Ayoze Perez is on Tyneside at the moment, but the Spanish press this morning seem to think it’s already a done deal with various reports out today.

Ayoze Pérez

Ayoze Perez – imminent signing

It seems the youngster has a €2M (£1.6M) release clause in his contract, and Newcastle are willing to pay that, even though he will be one for the future,  and will probably be in the Newcastle Development squad next season.

That’s being confirmed today in a number of Spanish newspapers, and they seem to think it’s already a done deal, and that the deal could even be announced today – so that’s at least consistent with some of yesterday’s reporting in the UK.

The news yesterday was that the youngster was already on Tyneside getting his medical, and that terms had already been agreed – which is usually the case before any medical is taken.

And Portuguese journalist Goncalo Lopes, on his Twitter site – tweeted this:

“Ayoze Perez close to sign for Newcastle. Refused FC Porto.”

He could even be right about that.

But the Chronicle and other local papers are also reporting that Newcastle are playing down yesterday’s news, but if a signing is imminent,  that’s usually what they say – so as not to alert other potential interested parties, until the deal is signed, sealed and delivered.

And if we were to read the tea leaves carefully this morning – it seems that Perez could be our first summer signing – and maybe even completed today.

And it could be that we first heard of this player, during our mid-winter break in Tenerife a couple of years ago.

Perez had a good season in the Spanish second division last season, and scored a good 13 goals in 33 appearances for his club, and he can improve big time on Tyneside, with the right coaching – that’s the idea.

He would be a very decent first signing this summer.

Comments welcome.

    Spot on
Asked a few months if Pardew and the board had marked this window as one where a major restructure needed doing, as the club have said, then what bloody genius decided to do that restructure during the World Cup!!!
Makes it all the more shocking that they have had this window marked but don’t have a single deal in place

    Repost,
    tads,
As I have said so many times on here, it is being made up as it’s going along, by the looks of it nobody has actually sat down and worked out that x amount of players are in their last year, the limited staff are too busy researching other clubs players last years and researching the cost of cup runs, the sad part is that the ruthless businessman that does own us could have us profiting and successful if he turned his hand to it, I’m not having that a minorities threats to his daughter made him like this, the wheels were set in motion long beore he sold Milner which ultimately led to KK leaving, did Abromovich spit the dummy when the Chelsea fans supported Mourinho.

I hope this ‘signing’ doesn’t have people purring over Mashers ambition, it is the first in a year and a half and has taken another release clause to loosen the purse strings.

    JFA
    Certainly seems that way
So much for the 5 year plan eh!

Not sure how Ashley let the situation with so many players contracts running down get that way
Thought Dekka confirmed ages ago any player with a contract running down would either have to sign up or ship out?

Very good young player, reminds me a bit of Luis Suarez, I cant understand why he should be in a developing squad in 20?? he has scored 16 in 33 for Tenerife this season, he has goals in him, is quick and read the game well…Much better than what we have already…I dont rate Remy as our player

  • 6 toonarmydownsouth // May 21, 2014 at 9:05 AM

    JFA
    lol not at all
Already reports that the club see him as one of for the future and don’t think he’ll adapt to England this season

Just hope he doesn’t go into the reserves….you know the one with no manager as we haven’t bothered replacing him, should come on leaps and bounds there!!!

    toondoonsooth
I, we could make up a fat lazy eleven
    Manager Fat Sam Allardyce
Who have we got so far: Kenwyn Jones, Darren Bent, John Hartson, I’ll add Andy Reid, Keeper Budgie Burridge

    Charlie,
Micky Quinn as Ambassador of football.

  • 9 bobby mango // May 21, 2014 at 9:10 AM

Would be overjoyed with this, merely because I expected or first signing to be an extension of Shola’s contract.

Like many here have said I don’t see he’s automatically going to be in the development squad…. If he is that equals the end of career. What youngster has actually developed in the last 7 years? Arma is our big hope, the rest haven’t progressed enough with our coaches.

  • 10 Lilongwe Geordie // May 21, 2014 at 9:15 AM

Have people seen him play at all?? In real games, rather than youtube highlight reels? The Spanish Segunda division isn’t exactly a top league, and 16 in 33 is decent, but little more than that.

I get we haven’t really got an array of strikers at the club, but if this is for anything more than development then we are in for trouble next year, unless someone who has seen him play 10 or so games can tell me otherwise.

  • 11 Jail for Ashley // May 21, 2014 at 9:15 AM

    bobby mango,
Our first signing would have been Shola but he’s snubbed us, I bet we offered him half what he’s getting now, I thought he’d take it though !

  • 12 Jail for Ashley // May 21, 2014 at 9:17 AM

    Lil,
Most of us haven’t seen a lot of these players in action, we only go from our scouts recommendations, some on here check stats on FM and others You tube.

  • 13 Charlie in the Gallowgate // May 21, 2014 at 9:18 AM

    Jail
Micky Quinn – Good one !! had to have a chuckle

  • 14 Lilongwe Geordie // May 21, 2014 at 9:21 AM

    Jail,
Yeah, that sounds about right. I could understand people having watched French, Dutch, German and Spanish top flight games, but as far as the Segunda goes, I’m not sure that anyone will have.

Yet people are saying he is good enough to start in the Prem? Or comparing to Suarez?? Nuts.

  • 15 The next Mike Williamson // May 21, 2014 at 9:25 AM

We’ll have to loan him out. A year in reserves at his age will ruin him.

  • 16 firebug666 // May 21, 2014 at 9:25 AM

I have not seen Perez mentioned on SSN or on their live transfer page, you would think that if something was happening with this lad and Newcastle Sky Sports would have an inside knowledge of it.

The British press have no idea either and are only printing the news coming out of Spain.

Guess we shall all just have to wait for a photograph of Perez holding up a black & white shirt.

  • 17 cyprus // May 21, 2014 at 9:27 AM

His numbers sound good and it’s from the right direction (low-heading up) unlike the ‘wrong direction’ a la Owen Kluivert.

Still, we need 3 10 mil. players… 4, as one won’t take – ask Spurs for details :)

  • 18 bobby mango // May 21, 2014 at 9:28 AM

Jail… Yeah i saw that. Makes me think things must really be bad behind the scenes if Shola is choosing to leave.

I’m actually glad he’s going, because it guarantees we have to buy forwards now. I feared we’d hold onto him and Cisse as our main strike force next season!

  • 19 Blackley and Brownlie // May 21, 2014 at 9:28 AM

Giving our players birthday cards may be one of those things we’ve overlooked in the past if I’m honest. The Toure scenario might have highlighted it a little bit.

We need to look at every situation at this football club to make sure we give ourselves the best possible chance and birthday cards is one of them for sure. The personal touch is a factor 100%.

We need to strength in the birthday card scenario, for definite. Lets say it’s increased the discussion mode on that. I don’t think the card budget has been big enough in all the time I’ve been here if I’m honest and that may have cost us at times.

  • 20 Lilongwe Geordie // May 21, 2014 at 9:28 AM

I watched Tenerife once this season, and if this lad played in that game, he certainly didn’t do anything.

  • 21 cyprus // May 21, 2014 at 9:29 AM

If he’s for the so-called development squad, forget it. We have plenty of those, still in development!

  • 22 Lilongwe Geordie // May 21, 2014 at 9:30 AM

    Blackley,
We need to factor in the cost of birthday cards over their contract term as well.

  • 23 mindshaft // May 21, 2014 at 9:30 AM

I’m not defending Pards or our coaching staff but young players we’ve tried in the first team in last few years that haven’t actually set the world alight

    Tavernier
    Vuckic
    Bigi
    Cambell
    Streete
    Richardson
    Abeid

Young uns that are now regularly in 1st team squad
    Dummett
    Sammi Ameobi
    Arma

So we do actually try to get young uns through, they just aren’t taking chances or are simply not good enough for 1st team or Pards is playing them out of position

  • 24 Blackley and Brownlie // May 21, 2014 at 9:31 AM

I think if we had given birthday cards to Shola over the years we might have been looking at a different scenario a little bit. The big fella might have been a bit more inclined to stay with us for another season or two if I’m honest.

  • 25 Lilongwe Geordie // May 21, 2014 at 9:37 AM

    Mindshaft,
Campbell?? He was used in a similar way to Arma, not really given any chance in first team. Streete has never played for the first team. Bigi had a very solid debut season for us, and has dropped off the face of the earth. I’d imagine part of his poor second team form is due to us trying to convert hi into a centre half.

Richardson?? Barely got any time. Vuckic, Abeid Tavernier have played bit parts in cups, but never really given a chance.

I don’t think some of them are good enough, but they have hardly been given a chance here mate.

  • 26 Lilongwe Geordie // May 21, 2014 at 9:38 AM

In reference to Bent and Almeida, I’d rather we kept Shola than either of those two, not that I think we are in any way after them.

  • 27 Toonfan8 // May 21, 2014 at 9:46 AM

    Lilongwe Geordie
have you seen him play? how can u tell he is not good enough for first team if you didnt see him? I compared him to Suarez in 20y.o…yes for sure, we need strikers from PL experienc so Shola,Bent and Carlton Cole are best…

  • 28 lesh // May 21, 2014 at 9:47 AM

Lilongwe…. A very valid point about factoring incidental costs into player costs.

There’s their birthday candles, wrapping paper, bus fares to shops, gift vouchers for SD….. All of the little things we laymen take for granted.

It all mounts up and every little helps (inflate costs).

  • 29 xiaofeiii // May 21, 2014 at 10:13 AM

if we going to sign a youngster.. I rather give Armstrong more playing time

  • 30 bobby mango // May 21, 2014 at 10:13 AM

Mindshaft… I can’t help thinking their lack of progress is directly affected by poor coaching. If the coaching was up to scratch I think a few of them would’ve made it.

It’s not just the young players hindered. Aside from Perch and Willo (this season) I’ve not seen one player get better under Pardew. They seem to plateau or decline.

  • 31 peterk3 // May 21, 2014 at 12:24 PM

In the development squad eh. That the last we see of him then, along with Bigirama, Mehdi Abeid, Amalfitano, Shane Ferguson, Tavernier and Haris Vu?ki? to name a few.
