It seems that Newcastle United are still interested in bringing West Ham central midfielder Mohamed Diame to Newcastle in the summer, and one of the (many) areas we need to strengthen is in central midfield.
Mo Diame in action against Newcastle
Hopefully we will be able to get some creative players in this summer to replace the departed Yohan Cabaye, and since Diame is said to have a release clause in his contract of only £3.5M, he would be a good acquisition for Newcastle at that price.
But it will depend on whether Liverpool are interested in the player, since it seems he would just love to sign for the Reds, and has already made that public.
One reason that Diame was frustrated at the Hammers last season was that manager Sam Allardyce played him on the wing a lot, and Sam played former Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan and Newcastle target Mark Noble in central midfield.
The three clubs said to be initially interested in the player are Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle, with Everton also said to be becoming interested in the 18 times capped Senegal International, who was born in Creteil in France.
The 26-year-old is also wanted by Inter-Milan , so if some of these bigger clubs are really interested in the midfielder, and it’s not just paper-talk, it wouldn’t be good for Newcastle.
And with Newcastle wanting to complete their transfer business before the World Cup starts on June 12th, we’ll have to get a move on, and should be hearing of some signings fairly soon.
That’s always assuming Newcastle will complete their transfers before mid June, which was always going to be very tough, especially in a World Cup year, where clubs generally want to hold onto their players hoping they will perform well in the competition and their transfer fee goes up.
While at West Ham over the last two seasons Diame has made 75 appearances with 7 goals, and while at Wigan in the previous three seasons, he played 103 games with 7 goals – so he has ample Premier League experience..
