We are hoping that Newcastle can get their first senior signing of the summer very shortly, and that’s going to have to be soon, if we are going to complete our transfer business before the World Cup starts in June, which is the stated objective.
Clement Grenier – Newcastle back in for 23 year-old
It looks like Lee Charnley has made a decent start in that we have tied up Tenerife’s young striker Ayoze Perez , and the deal will be completed when Tenerife complete their season in early June.
The Express are reporting today in what they are calling an exclusive, that Newcastle are willing to pay around £10M for Lyon playmaker Clement Grenier, the player they tried desperately to sign in January, as a replacement for the departed Yohan Cabaye.
Newcastle’s bid to sign the French International, who is in France’s 23 man squad for the World Cup, came to an end when it looked like they offered half of what we got for Yohan Cabaye – and that upset both his agent and the player himself.
However we got £20M for Cabaye and that still means the current £10M bid has not increased from January.
Federic Guerra is Grenier’s agent (he’s also Moussa Sissoko’s agent), but like our other French midfield target Remy Cabella, there are now bigger clubs interested in the player, and Guerra has said he will be in contact with his client in Brazil during the World Cup, and that he thinks he’s worth €20M (about £16.2M).
The fee is important to Guerra, because he will likely get a percentage of that fee as payment for getting the deal done.
Several clubs are interested in the 23 year-old three times capped French International, who has played for all the French youth sides and has been at Lyon since way back in 2002.
Clement would be a terrific signing for Newcastle, but with other clubs said to also be interested, it could be difficult for Newcastle to get this lad through the door.
But we live in hope.
Last season Grenier played 41 times in all competitions for Lyon, with 7 goals and 8 assists.
