There’s a good report in France Football that Newcastle are interested in 21 year-old Nice central defensive midfielder Nampalys Mendy, and we have to hope the report is true.
Nampalys Mendy – Newcastle interested in 21 year-old
He is just 5’6″ tall, the same height as Vurnon Anita, and because of his stature, and the way he plays simply and reliably, he has already brought comparisons with the great former 77 times capped French international Claude Makelele, who is one inch taller, and ended up paying 140 times for Real Madrid and 217 times for Chelsea.
Mendy has already spent three seasons at Monaco and played 80 times there, and last summer he became a free agent and joined Nice, where he played 19 times last season, and he still has to score his first goal. – so even in that he is like the great Makelele, who scored only twice for both Real Madrid and Chelsea.
Indeed, Monaco’s scout Didier Christophe referred to Mendy as a “carbon copy of Claude Makelele” – which cannot be bad.
The French report suggests that Newcastle have been at a number of the Nice games this season, scouting the player who turns 22 next month, and this lad already is thought of as being a top future star, and he has 99 first team appearances to his name already.
Mendy has played for all the French Youth sides from U17 to U21, but has not yet been capped at the full French level, and that’s similar to what Yohan Cabaye had done before he signed on at Newcastle almost three years ago – and Yohan turned out to be one of Newcastle’s best signings in a long, long time.
Nampalys was born in La Seyne-sur-Mer in south-east France, and started his youth career at nearby Toulon, where he played for various clubs, but he then caught the eye of Monaco scouts for his simple and intelligent play, and in the summer of 2007, at just 15 years old he was signed by Monaco.
This lad is a very competitive player, who is a great passer of the ball, and like all great players he likes to play the simple pass and also has great positional awareness, and that’s very important, especially if you play in defensive midfield.
Of course other top clubs are after him, and last summer when he was a free agent, he was heavily linked with Manchester United, and at the time he said that would be a dream move for him.
He finally signed for Nice, who had to pay Monaco a compensation fee for the youngster.
We hope this report in France Football is true, and if Newcastle are really interested, then we hope we move in quickly to get this lad signed up.
