Newcastle Defender Gets New Contract Offer

9:21 am, Wednesday, May 28th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 11 Comments

Davide Santon is settled at Newcastle and is building a new family on Tyneside, and while we knew he wasn’t keen on a move this summer, it wasn’t clear what Newcastle’s intentions were, after Davide had only a mediocre season last term, but that’s not unlike many other Newcastle players.

Davide Santon – staying on Tyneside

Davide has already said a few times he has no wish to leave Newcastle, and he has even hinted he would like a new deal at the club, and news today from his agent that not only will he be staying at the club, but Newcastle have offered the 23 year-old a new deal.

The 23-year-old Italian has continually been linked with a move to some of Italy’s biggest clubs, ever since he arrived on Tyneside from Inter-Milan almost three years ago for £5M as one of Italy’s best up and coming players.

His agent Renzo Contratto has talked to AS Radio Roma, and had this to say:.

“Santon is happy at Newcastle,” “The club have just offered him a new contract.”  “Are other teams interested in him? None of this talk is true, they are just rumors.”

Davide had a couple of dreadful game this year when he was hauled off at the half, but he’s showed over the last three years he’s a good player and he played well until Christmas, and Newcastle will already be losing a number of their French players this year.

And Davide is still the best left back we have, although he has been challenged by local lad Paul Dummett and young Frenchman Massadio Haidara last season.

Davide played 28 times in total for the team last term, and over three years he has made 93 appearances for the Magpies with one goal – and it looks like he’s staying at the club this summer, and could be on a new deal too.

And one good thing with Davide is that he loves it at Newcastle and wants to stay – and that’s still important.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

    JFA

LC is our new DOF, I wouldn’t judge him now. Not everything is made public knowledge especially before the window open. Who knows LC might surprise us with many players already signed.
If we still have JK as DOF, then I 100% agree with you.
I am more worried about how are we going to play, what kind of football style we will be playing especially when pardew already booed. Will he realise and change his style or not?

    Not true mate
He’s not our DoF, he’s the new MD and has been not only at the club for years but heavily involved in our transfers as well
Given his mission statement of sticking to policy and bringing in 1-2 players per calendar year (which is 2 transfer windows) what evidence is there in any way shape or form that things will now change?

On the style of football, isn’t that why we needed a proper DoF?
Not an accountant yes man promoted from within to an MD position?
You know like a qualified DoF who can scout coaches and potential managers for both the youth and senior team, decide what style if football the club wants to see and set that philosophy in place at all levels throughout the club?

    Scottie
If Debuchy goes and Santon moves to RB how have we got cover?

  • 5 Scottiedog // May 28, 2014 at 9:42 AM

@ 4 – Haidara can slot straight into LB!!!!!!

  • 6 toonarmydownsouth // May 28, 2014 at 9:44 AM

    Scottie
    But how is that cover?
That’s not cover in the slightest it’s stretching an already stretched squad

    SCottie>

I can’t work out if you’re being ironic stating that if Debuchy goes we have cover at RB???

Santon has been pretty poor all season at LB but just because he is naturally left-footed does not make him a good RB.

In fact whenever he’splayed there for us he’s been AWFUL, really, really poor.

Your joking right? If not what do you base that on?

Yes, well spotted, definitely “looking” like one, I believe was the term used. Best guess.

I would personally like Hadaira to be given an opportunity for the left back spot. Looks head and shoulders above Dummett. And Santon positional sense is shocking, Gets destroyed if attacked.
Would sooner lose Santon than Debs all day long

SAFC sign Billy Jones from WBA. Nothing spectacular but at least a signing lol.

Was actually hoping persistent rumours of a big bid from AC Milan were true – as ling as any cash could be reinvested elsewhere. If Jose reckons he’s the next Maldini, perhaps he’ll swap us for Lukaku.
