Bafetimbi Gomis will be 29 in August and there was always going to be a decision as to whether he was now too old for Newcastle this summer, and that was particularly true when new Managing Director Lee Charnley said a few months ago that Newcastle will continue their policy of signing younger players – preferably around 26 or younger – with their best days ahead of them.
Bafe Gomis – wage demands too high
But a few days ago and even last summer there were rumors that another problem with Gomis would be the one what would scuttle any Newcastle deal, and in the Journal today, there’s a report that his wage demands are sky-high, and that’s the reason Newcastle will not be going after the free agent this summer.
Gomis is a free agent, and in that position the player is usually looking to benefit from there being no transfer fee, by getting a signing on fee, and good wages over the term of the contract.
And it’s also true that we will lose three of our strikers this summer, and we’ll need to bring in replacements, and for us Gomis would have been a good signing – even at 29.
Newcastle were close to signing Gomis last year, and his agents have again been in contact with Newcastle this summer, but if the Journal is correct – he’s not one of the (good) strikers who will make the trek to Newcastle this summer.
We’ll have to wait and see – because there seem to be different reports every few days on what Newcastle’s real intentions are as far as the French International striker is concerned.
It must be the summer.
