Newcastle’s right back Mathieu Debuchy could be in demand this summer, and we thought initially that could be with PSG, the club his best friend joined in January, but Arsenal seem to be interested, and of course they have to replace their top French full-back Bacary Sagna, as the free agent is thought to be joining Manchester City for a massive wage shortly.
Mathieu Debuchy – could be leaving Newcastle
The news is that the French reporters – maybe trying to stir up trouble – asked him about a possible move from Newcastle to Arsenal this summer, and this is what he said at the Clairfontaine facility this morning:
“No, honestly, I did not hear about any talks over a possible transfers to table.” “For my part, I do not feel affected by it.” “I leave it to my agents to manage that and I remain focused on the World Cup.”
We suppose it would have been better if he had said something like ¨I don’t know anything about it, and in any case I’m not interested because I’m very happy at Newcastle.¨
But he didn’t say that, and it would not be a great surprise if either PSG or Arsenal come in for the player, that he would want to leave Newcastle to join one of those clubs, who have huge ambitions – well at least compared to the current Newcastle United.
We cannot offer our players European football these days, and we’ve had long periods where we have struggled mightily in the Premier League over the last two seasons.
In the eighteen months Debuchy has been at Newcastle, he has become a much better player than he was at Lille, and that was also true with Yohan Cabaye, and both were first choices for their countries leading up to next month’s World Cup in Brazil.
But with Newcastle seemingly now a middle of the table club in the Premier League, we have become a stepping stone to bigger clubs for our very best players – there’s little doubt about that.
Unless and until we have more ambition to qualify for the Champions League every year, we will not be able to keep our best players at the club for more than a couple of years.
And that’s not good. 🙁
Debuchy has played 46 times for Newcastle with one goal, and he was one of our best players last season.
