The Journal is reporting today that talks have begun between Newcastle United and Greek club Panathiaikos about the long term future of 21 year-old Newcastle midfielder Mehdi Abeid, who has just completed a successful season long loan at the Greek side where former Newcastle center-back Nikos Dabizas is the Technical Director.
Mehdi Abeid – talks ongoing with Panathiaikos
It’s not clear if Alan Pardew is willing to make a deal with the Greek side before he takes another look at the 21 year-old Algerian in pre-season training, but it seems a permanent transfer of around £300K is in the offing, and that figure is all the financially stretched Greek club can afford..
Of all the players out on loan last season Mehdi and James Tavernier were the most successful, and we thought Pardew would be taking a closer look at these two players before deciding on their Newcastle futures – but maybe not.
Mehdi scored 10 goals in 38 total appearances for the Greek Super League last season, and was one of their star performers, and he is already a favorite of the Panathiaikos fans.
Abeid was signed as a free agent by Newcastle three years ago from Lens, after his contract at the French club ran out, and he has made 5 appearances so far for the Newcastle first team.
Comments welcome.

Comment #8I don’t think we will sell him
pards was saying when he went out onloan how talented he is but no1 over here knew anything about him so he had to go abroad
take a look pre season and see if use him or then loan him to championship team and see how he gets on

He was told last summer he had no future at the club. Pardew said that he is talented and no club in England wanted him only in the last few months after seeing him do well in Greece.

Been reports for a while he wants out and read an interview somewhere (can’t remember where) that he would love to make the move permanent
Fed up of not being given a chance after some very good pre season showings and some good cameos

Comment #14if the player wants out might as well sell him but with a very big sell on clause
to be fair the year we got him and almafitino both looked good in that preseason shame the way its panned out for them
there is not one youngster that’s been given a fair crack at the first team I would think hadiara will seek a move soon f he don’t start getting games
Sammy seems to be like his brother and will take what he gets

Comment #15i watched him in a fair few youth games for us and tbf he looked very avg often outplayed by the likes of bigi/vukic when you compare them !
the loan has done the lad the world of good though it seems and even though i’ve not seen him play and only read about him in greece (and taking away its a weaker league) i still think he’s worth a proper look at esp if he’s used as acm cover for next season !
must get ready for another depressing day of refreshing pages waiting for the transfers that will never happen again >.< just one or 2 signings fast please to make me start believing again !

Comment #17@berrmonkey: Haidara needs time on loan just to beef up a bit. Poor lad gets wiped out every game, if he’s getting regular football he might start learning to ride the challenges a little more and avoid the fear factor that seems to have set in after the Wigan game the other season.

cant see pards giving the lad the time he needs
if we sell debs and move santon to the right
maybe he will get more time but as it stands your right he needs to go out onloan
he certainly wont learn anything on the bench

Comment #19There were rumours about his attitude but this lad has all the attributes to be a top player. Selling him now would be yet another bad decision by the club. Monitor him pre season and give him starts alongside sissoko with tiote holding.
Plus he’s a box to box player who can score goals which is something we severely lack!

Comment #21Pardew seems to literally be the worst man manager ive seen at this club. Surely after a successful loan spell both Mehdi and Curtis Good would both be show at least the first few games and then shipped back out on loan if they prove to not be quite ready yet.
Its a carrot for the lads to play towards. This regime is completely all over the place, an absolute shambles!!

Comment #22Can someone tell me how Dummett get’s picked over Hadaira. The lad has more potential than Dummett or Santon in the left back position.
Abeid has proved a success story while out on loan, Which is more than can be said for our lads in jock land.
Would definitely give the lad a chance in the first team next season. And if he cannot step up then move him on .

Comment #25One of the young players who Pardew publicly criticised as being not good enough.
Funny, he struggles to get the first team even vaguely playing a cohesive game, so the young ones haven’t much hope in decent guidance.

Comment #27Haidara needs a 5 game run in the team like Dummett had, but dummett didnt impress me, his distribution is poor so many timws he jus hoofs up the line to noone.
Our best young left back for distribution I think is fergie, his crossing is fantastic but also hes calm in possession unlike dummet.
Jurys still out on haidara but he looked very good going forward vs liverpool

That’s my point mate, That Pardew kept picking Dummett over Hadaira. Dummett gets skinned every time a player has a go at him much like Santon does.
Hadaira for me looks as good a bet than anyone we currently have at the club to claim the left back spot given a chance.
Fergie has been a bench warmer in a struggling championship side so personally cannot see him making the grade at Nufc

Have to massively disagree on both Tavernier and Ferguson, these are exactly the type of fringe players would should be shipping out
Tavernier has had six loan spells! All at league 1 and 2, he will be 23 not too soon into the new season and should be much much further on in terms of progression than he is
Have seen him on a fair few occasions and always looks well out of his depth
There’s a reason he looks good at league 1/2 level, it’s where he’s suited to, Simpson looked brilliant for QPR in the championship and most couldn’t wait to see him gone, he’s twice the player Tav is
As for Ferguson, same again, loan spell after loan spell with no real progression, if anything he’s gone backwards and rarely even made the bench for a poor Birmingham side fighting for survival
I’m all for seeing youngsters come through but not just for the sake of it, and these two along with Vuckic in all honesty have no business near a NUFC first team

Comment #31Is it me or are the lads we look to move on apparent trouble makers….Nolan, Barton, Carroll (handed in a transfer request), Cabaye (Had an “agreement”) and now the lads we are looking to move on, Marv, HBA and Abeid (Bad attitudes etc.) personally I think it’s all BS, all these players are ambitious and know under percy and this regime they will win nothing.
Its nice to see the fans finally seeing the light with Dummett, I said right from the off he was championship standard at best but was slated for it, this kid is shockingly bad going forward and is terrible as a defender. Haidara is apparently up for grabs this summer so its clear that Pards doesn’t rate him!! WHAT A SHAME
£300k for Abeid is shocking, this lad would be a good squad player….I would play him ahead of Anita!!

Comment #32We better not sell abeid! This is exactly the type of player we need to replace cabaye and we already have him on the books! It would be complete nonsense to send someone on loan, have him set the world alight and then sell him! (But we did it with Forster so wouldn’t surprise me)

Completely agree with you mate, Vuckic Tavernier and Fergusson need to be moved but I would add Campbell to that list as well.
I have high hopes for Arrons and Armstrong. Sammy did alright when he had a brief spell last season and I’d give him more game time along with Abeid and Bigirimana.

Yeah Campbell really didn’t match the hype in the SPL but I’d like to see him on loan in the championship at say a Derby where they play football suited to his game
Jury is out on Arma for me, needs a sensible loan spell and needs to play but looks good
Normally don’t use the term Pardewed mainly because i think we heavily over rate some of our players but if a player ever was Pardewed it is most certainly poor Bigiriman!
This lad looked a real player and imho Pardew, in one move, absolutely destroyed this lad
That move?
Playing him as bloody RM in a European QF against Benfica then hooking him at half time
What a ridiculous move
If watch his games before that game, he was great, he battled hard, he tackled hard, he intercepted passes he broke up play he played the ball out from the back he burst forward he dropped deep to support Tiote honestly the lad was a ball of energy with a great football brain
Then watch him after that game, confidence shattered
Same for Sammy really always looks very lively when he comes on and in the games we need a boost he’s over looked and we throw on another LB ffs!

Comment #39So Pardew is systematically getting shot of most of Carr’s recommendations then? This bloke is covering his arse more and more. This next season (cos we all know he’s going nowhere) Pardew will have us in the bottom 6 from day 1 with a slow, gradual slump downhill in the winter before relegation and humiliation once again.
I’m certain that everyone upstairs at the club knows this, and Ashley too. He’s not stupid, he just seems to be totally disinterested with our club.

Comment #40The guy has talent, isn’t English or a “grafter” so he is the exact opposite of what Pardew looks for in a player .
He would have Raylor or Gosling over Abeid any day of the week .
