Grenier Injured – France Call Up Newcastle’s Top Target

2:12 pm, Friday, June 6th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 57 Comments

Newcastle United midfield target Clement Grenier of Lyon re-injured his groin yesterday in training, and L’Equipe is reporting in France this morning that he has been withdrawn from the France squad for the World Cup in Brazil.

remy cabella 98

Remy Cabella – brought into France World Cup squad

And another Newcastle target – Remy Cabella – has been called up into the France squad to replace him, and that may hinder Newcastle attempts to get Cabella to Newcastle.

But it will give the 24 year-old Montpellier midfielder some very good experience to be part of the France World Cup squad over the next four weeks or so.

Grenier had groin problems at the end of March, and that seems to have been what he’s re-injured, so it’s a pity for the 23 year-old Lyon play-maker, who is also a potential target of Newcastle this summer.

Cabella seems to be coming through for France, after he picked up his first full cap last week, and Newcastle would do very well to get him signed up before the World Cup starts next Thursday – but that could be difficult.

Comments welcome.

    Ayoze Perez = AP

  • 2 Our Toon // Jun 6, 2014 at 2:14 PM

    Wandering Geordie

Could be another PR scam to make fans think he is signing so that season tickets get sold lol

Best guess is that we are so short on numbers that its best to have as many shirts up as possible incl Shola’s

  • 3 Toon1978 // Jun 6, 2014 at 2:16 PM

Cabella should have been signed a week ago but for Ashley constant penny pinching. Not a chance of getting Cabella now. Best go for S.D.Jong instead.

  • 4 Our Toon // Jun 6, 2014 at 2:26 PM

    Toon 1978

~How about both of them or even Grenier? I think its safe to say Cabella won’t get a start for the French team so not too sure how much of a bearing this will have.

Apparently the only thing that needs to be ratified is a deal with Montpellier the rest is already agreed

after calmly thinking about perez i’ve come to the conclusion the lad will never be a hit 🙁

the guys ears are huge !!! theres no way someone with those ears can be aerodynamic ! i mean look at prince charles ! you can tell a mile off he wouldnt be any good for our team…and why ? the ears i tell you ^^

  • 6 croftus5678 // Jun 6, 2014 at 2:33 PM

siem would be better than grenier but i wouldnt take grenier over cabella.

on a serious note now i really dont think we will get cabella now if he’s in the world cup and plays as better teams than us will be watching him so expect goofy left wing 🙁 siem in middle.

  • 7 Shaker // Jun 6, 2014 at 2:35 PM

    not good at all 🙁 🙁 🙁
    not good !!
    now his price will increase

  • 8 Shaker // Jun 6, 2014 at 2:36 PM

Newcastle needs to sign Cabella NOW
before the World Cup no matter what it costs !!!!!!!!

  • 9 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 6, 2014 at 2:40 PM

He’s not called up yet Ed
Schneiderlin has apparently been called up to replace Grenier
Cabella going rests on whether Ribery is declared fit

  • 10 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jun 6, 2014 at 2:41 PM

Guys we probably won’t sign him anyway!

  • 11 sweendog // Jun 6, 2014 at 2:44 PM

toonarmydownsouth .. I reckon Ribery will go .. they’ll not want to risk not taking their best player

  • 12 sweendog // Jun 6, 2014 at 2:44 PM

toonarmydownsouth .. where did you hear about schneiderlin?

  • 13 jazzyp // Jun 6, 2014 at 2:44 PM

I hope your right mate regarding Schneiderlin. It sounds by all accounts the Cabella deal was all about done. Be well gutted pal to miss out at such a late stage..
Would still try with a cheeky bid on Greneir as well even if injured

  • 14 jazzyp // Jun 6, 2014 at 2:48 PM

Sounds like we beat off some serious competition for this lad Perez. Many big players were after this lad and we’ve shown him the most love…..Aaarrh isn’t that sweet

  • 15 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jun 6, 2014 at 2:55 PM

…and imagine what playing in our development squad can do for this lads career? 😉

  • 16 jazzyp // Jun 6, 2014 at 2:56 PM

B@llocks…….Ribery is out of the world cup as well

  • 17 jazzyp // Jun 6, 2014 at 2:57 PM

Remy Cabella will replace Ribery……….Just been confirmed.

  • 18 Our Toon // Jun 6, 2014 at 2:58 PM

    Looks like both are out

  • 19 Shaker // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:00 PM

    Ribery out ? 🙁
how Montpellier will sell Cabella now ??

  • 20 Our Toon // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:01 PM

Cabella could well get a game now, SHOP WINDOW

  • 21 Our Toon // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:03 PM

Don’t worry we were still haggling over the price, generally takes us a month/2 months to agree to the asking price.

  • 22 jazzyp // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:05 PM

Oh well we still have Colback !!

  • 23 Average_Contents // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:06 PM

    Pete Graves@PeteGravesSky

So #nufc confirm Ayoze Perez as first signing of the summer. Colback to follow imminently. Gomis and Cabella talks continue.

  • 24 the truth will out // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:10 PM

    tbh cant see it

  • 25 lesh // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:11 PM

so, we’re faced with the possibility of missing Luton Cabella coz his price shoots up?

All because we’ve pi$$ed about rather than seriously negotiate a deal.

    Will we ever learn?

  • 26 Pardews Prolific Boys // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:17 PM

    Crofts. What about Lineker?

  • 27 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:20 PM

Ohh how I cannot wait for us to sign Colback. His stats on who scored went through the roof!

How are you doing jazzyp pal?

  • 28 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:22 PM

ppB…did you ever try the Diplomatico Reserva?

  • 29 jazzyp // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:32 PM

    All good mate thanks……..Yourself !!
Looks like bringing in Remy C has just been made a tad harder now he is offski to the world cup. Think Mr S dj may be made a priority now.

  • 30 Belfast // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:34 PM

    Hopefully he plays terrible lol

    Jesper pipe down

  • 31 Belfast // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:36 PM

I really hope we’re not paying Gomis the huge wages that seem to have put Swansea and the likes of him.

  • 32 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:40 PM

Well there goes the last shred of hope over signing Cabella then

On to our next target…….Karl Henry

  • 33 GeordieTwo // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:41 PM

Still do not understand what our owner is up to. The club is in a terrible state and he piddles about signing a second division 20 year old. We have huge problems and show little desire to attack them. Does Ashley really want a relegation battle next season? If so his approach to signings will bring it on!

  • 34 Belfast // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:42 PM

I don’t expect that kid will be anywhere near the first team unless he’s amazing in the reserves.

  • 35 Pardews Prolific Boys // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:42 PM

Jesper I did. And it’s one of my favourites, it’s got some cherry and some brandy-esque flavours in there.
I also have Ron zacapa centenario gran solera. Which is beautiful and well balanced
Ron mocambo (in the old pistol shaped bottle)
And my personal guilty pleasure plantation Barbados xo for the sweet toothed rhum lover

  • 36 GeordieTwo // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:43 PM

Where is the transfer budget and why isn’t it being used properly? We need to spend at least 30M pounds conservatively to even make a dent in our problems. Good players cost money Ashley, like it or not.

  • 37 Pardews Prolific Boys // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:45 PM

Oh and Jesper. Old monk too

  • 38 sweendog // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:47 PM

wouldn’t worry about Cabella .. I’m not sure france is gonna do that well without ribery their best player ..also now grenier could be cheaper ..

  • 39 sweendog // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:47 PM

    Belfast .. agreed

  • 40 Pardews Prolific Boys // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:49 PM

Sween they have a piss easy group and ribery looked like a ball greedy liability 2year ago at the euros

  • 41 GeordieTwo // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:49 PM

With an aging central defense, no attack and little creativity in the midfield you would think there would be plenty for Ashley to be concerned about. Apparently not. The faeries have granted him three wishes and one of them is that we don’t get relegated next season.

  • 42 AndyNUFC // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:52 PM

Just to keep you guys in the loop, Ross McCormack is NOT coming. Might seem a daft rumour to start with, but i’ve been been told that certain media is going to quash the story imminently.

  • 43 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:53 PM

jazzyp…I am great mate thanks for asking. I think we will have loads of trouble bringing players over the line (even the free ones unless we are happy with the likes of Colback)

Belfast…are you still here? Are your helper still doing the typing for you? I see you have scared of Ibiza?

ppB…you always were a good lad 😉 lol

…I’ll have to try that Plantation Barbados XO then!

  • 44 Belfast // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:53 PM

I’m glad that we kernt Ribery is out.

    Arrogant little sod he is

  • 45 toon22 // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:54 PM

If that Spanish kid cant defend P45due wont play him.
The picture alone shows he will vanish in the reserves.

Its all quite insulting as they really think thats going to boost season ticket sales. All its show is contempt/idiocy

    You chose.

  • 46 Belfast // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:55 PM

Where is Ibiza Jesper ? Seems to have dropped of the radar. Hopefully he’s rotting in some foreign Jail.

  • 47 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:55 PM

I would say the goes for both Ribery, Nasri and Benzema!

…more or less single handedly ruined France at the Euro!

  • 48 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:57 PM

Belfast…sadly he is just sitting in the shades at a random coffee shop near a beach sipping icecoffee and looking at bikini girls 😉

    …he says he’s working!

  • 49 Mister Tuff // Jun 6, 2014 at 3:58 PM

I’m not so sure France will do all that well in the WC -usually if things are not going well they’ll start fighting amongst themselves -might be a slight reduction in this scenario as they’ve left that loud mouth Nasri out. Will probably get through the group stages ok -but I think that will be about it.

  • 50 Mister Tuff // Jun 6, 2014 at 4:00 PM

  • 51 GeordieTwo // Jun 6, 2014 at 4:02 PM

How about this Ashley. Bring someone into the club as Director of Football who actually knows something about football. Then give him a transfer budget and step back. If he wants to sack Pardew and bring in his own manager let him do it.

  • 52 toonicle // Jun 6, 2014 at 4:05 PM

Is everyone else thinking Pardew will try to promote Good to the first team instead of signing a CB this summer? Not really sure how I feel about that, and with the way we leaked goals the last 2 seasons something needs to be done at the back.

  • 53 GeordieTwo // Jun 6, 2014 at 4:05 PM

Since you like the south of England so much Ashley and we don’t want you in the north, why don’t you buy a club down there and leave us alone? It’s a win-win for us. We get rid of you and you destroy a southern club for us! Beautiful.

  • 54 GeordieTwo // Jun 6, 2014 at 4:08 PM

Something huge needs to be done at the back toonicle. We need to bring in at least 2 CB’s to take up the slack as Colo and Willo get older. Bring them in now, not when we collapse defensively again next season Ashley. Gomis isn’t going to be enough up front either by any means.

  • 55 toonluvva // Jun 6, 2014 at 4:14 PM

    Geordie Two @51.

    Hang on, that’s a bit radical isn’t?

We all know that Mr Ashley always has his professional head on when dealing with matters at Sports Direct. But with us he just faffs about without a clue.

  • 56 toonicle // Jun 6, 2014 at 4:17 PM

G2- Totally agree, wasting money on Gomis in my opinion. No sell on value in 2 years when he’s 30 and those wage demands of his are a joke, just looking for one more payday contract before he retires. Would much rather see us bring Lasogga in and i’d love if we went after Hernandez from ManU. We should have at least 50 Mil to play with in transfers and here we are signing a second division spanish winger….

  • 57 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Jun 6, 2014 at 6:58 PM

Siem is Shiite ! Ajax will be laughing all the way to the Bank.

Seriously guys, he,s worse than his brother !
