Newcastle were interested in Marseilles attacking midfielder Andre Ayew last summer, but it was a terrible transfer window for the club, and Joe Kinnear only managed to bring in on-loan striker Loic Remy from relegated QPR, and Loic is leaving us this summer, and will probably be signing for Arsenal, who seem to be his first choice.
Andre Ayew – available from Marseilles
And news in the French daily La Provence yesterday, that Andre Ayew wants to leave his French club Marseilles – but it’s for a bigger club, after Marseilles only finished 6th in the French League last season, and missed out on even a Europa League place.
The 24 year-old Ghanaian striker, who can also play on the wing, has just one year on his contract at Marseilles, and last summer was linked with both Liverpool and Newcastle United.
And he said last summer he would love to get a move to The Reds, and recently he has also been linked with Italian club Napoli.
Napoli were third in the Italian League last season, so both Liverpool and Napoli can offer the player Champions League football next season, so if they are really interested, it could be difficult for Newcastle to get him on Tyneside this summer.
It also seems that Andre is willing to play out the final year of his contract at Marseilles and become a free agent next summer, so in that case the French club may want to get something for him this summer, rather than lose him for nothing next year.
Ayew is in Ghana’s World Cup squad as expected, as is his brother 22 year-old Jordan Ayew, who is also at Marseilles, and was on loan at Sochaux earlier this year.
And if Andre plays well in the World Cup, that could send his price higher, which is what Marseilles would no doubt like to see.
Last season he played 29 times for Marseilles with 8 goals and 4 assists, and he has played 47 times with 4 goals for Ghana.
We’d be happy with Newcastle signing either Andre or his younger brother Jordan, who also plays as a striker or a winger, and has already played 10 times for Ghana with 2 goals.
