Chelsea Join Race For Newcastle Striker Target

8:24 am, Sunday, June 15th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 6 Comments

As we reported recently, Borussia Dortmund seem willing to sell their 24 year-old Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and he was a target of Newcastle United last year, and the assumption is that Newcastle are interested in getting him to Tyneside, especially when his transfer fee  is said to be a fairly low £8M.

But bad news for Newcastle today if the news is accurate that Chelsea have joined the race for the former Saint Etienne striker, and if the London club are really serious, it could mean Newcastle will not get their man.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joined the Bundesliga club only last summer for around £10M,  and he seemed to have a decent first season in the Bundesliga with 16 goals in 32 games and he also had 5 assists.

However he was not a starter last season, and he is being allowed to leave after only one year, which is why some top clubs have been alerted to his availability.

Jose Mourinho will allow Demba Ba, Samuel Eto’o and possibly Fernando Torres leave this summer, and he needs to bring in some good replacement strikers to Stamford Bridge.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is a very good player, and last year he had this to say during the early summer months about Newcastle:

“I will choose England before any other destination.” “My dream has always been to play in one of the top two leagues in the world.”

“Newcastle are a good club and St James’s Park is a monumental stadium, where there are passionate fans.”

And then  he went to Germany, but  one advantage of joining Newcastle is that he would be a starter, and that may not be the case if he joined Chelsea, and he will now know what’s it like to be on the bench for most games – as he was in Germany.

But we also think that some other European clubs will be in for him – so it could be difficult for the Magpies to get their man.

Comments welcome.

Well, we can forget about PEA now.

With Chelski and Mourinho chasing him, we’re not in a race to sign him, it’ll be a walkover for Chelsea.

Ashley’ll be so disappointed to have missed out on yet another good player!

Hey ho, and on to the next name on the list – I’ll not use the word ‘target’ as a target’s there to aim at and we don’t do that these days.

So, Newcastle have tried to highjack a Chelsea target.

So, it’s a mid table team with a middle ranked manager that haven’t won a trophy in 50 years located in a provincial backwater against a Champions League team with a world class manager that regularly win trophies located in one of the worlds greatest cities. Might not take him too long to make a decision where he goes next.

    Totally agree with Lesh

There’s no race between us and Chelsea, we’re a non-runner in this league. Best we could probably hope for out of this scenario would be a shot at Demba Ba. We could desperately do with him but I still have a bad taste in my mouth from his last stint here.

How good (and surprising) would it be for us to actually sign one major player at their market value without shameful haggling? The fans desperately need and fully deserve a morale boost, something to re-ignite the UNITED spirit.

This is great news for Ashley, Pardew & Charnley.

Expect a statement soon expressing regret that despite a lot of effort we just couldn’t get him over the line.

I think they are always pleased when a much bigger and ambitious club get interested in a NUFC target as it means we don’t get them, and the money stays in MASH Holdings account. Lovely jubbly!
