Newcastle In Striker Bid – Decision This Week

12:21 am, Sunday, June 15th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 66 Comments

There was a report in the  German publication Bild a few days ago, that said that Newcastle had withdrawn from the race to sign Hertha Berlin’s German striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga

Pierre-Michel Lasogga – will decide his future next week

At that time the report was that it was going to be a straight choice for the 22 year-old between signing an extension for his current club Hertha Berlin or sign for Hamburg, where he an excellent loan spell last season, and scored 13 goals in 20 Bundesliga games..

However, now Hertha Berlin’s General Manager Michael Preetz, who was seen meeting at the Düsseldorf airport last week with Lasogga and his  mother Kerstin, who acts as his agent, has come out and said it’s still between three clubs – and it in fact does still include Newcastle.

This is what he has told Berliner Kurier:

“Next week there will be a decision. It is only about three clubs: Hertha, Hamburg or Newcastle.”

lasogga with manager

Pierre-Michel Lasogga – with Hertha Berlin’s Michael Preetz in Dusseldorf last week

So it seems now that Pierre has returned from his vacation,  he will be making a choice next week between the two German clubs and Newcastle United.

And we know that Hertha Berlin offered him new terms at that meeting last week, which took place at the Hotel Maritim at the Dusseldorf Airport.

Hopefully we should hear something next week.

Comments welcome.

Wayne Rooney Englands best player ? .

Gimme a break. Gerrard was non existent as well.

  • 7 toonking // Jun 15, 2014 at 12:56 AM

horray for costa rica, they might have kept us in the championship.

what I’ve seen from England today tells me, I’m sick of him, rooney is just not worth a place in the England starting 11.

first half he left baines with lots of problems and the left side has been a very weak point for us right through the game.

the secod half barkley is running with the ball and rooney tackles him, that is a selfish player who just plays for himself. So leave him on the bench roy, start either Wilshere, ox or lallana next time, please.

  • 8 kevymartins // Jun 15, 2014 at 12:57 AM

See that Pirlo Free kick lol… Hart was well beat the ball wen’t right then left smacked the bar. Pirlo really is one of the worlds best like.

  • 9 lesh // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:04 AM

Mmmm, ordinarily one would think that if Lasogga’s gonna choose between three clubs, we might just be in with a shout.

However, we are Newcastle United and about as attractive as a turf in a swimming pool.

We can write him off then.

    Hey ho

  • 10 Mister Tuff // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:06 AM

Crap performances from Gerrard/Rooney/Johnson/Baines and Hart as well.

  • 11 catchy in norway // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:06 AM

I don’t understand what our game plan was in that match

Rooney 🙁 why is he there ?

    welbeck ? why

Gerard ? did he play , he is my fave player from the premiership since it began, but he seems well of the pace of an international let alone captain

    glen Johnson aarrrrrr

Henderson ,wow still don’t rate him

woy get your head on mate,

  • 12 lesh // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:07 AM

    * a turf in a swimming pool

    = a turd in a ……

  • 13 AMEOBI // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:09 AM

I seen you called the 3 best players tonight. Pirlo could play when he’s 60, he’s just so classy. Balotelli only needed one chance, Marchiso I think he’s so underrated. Well I must say I don’t think England will get any where close to the Semi’s! Come on France 😉

  • 14 lesh // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:10 AM

catchy in norway, howay man – were you watching the same Welbeck as the rest of the world?

The lad played a blinder in the first half.

Or could he be a relative of Pardew? That might explain your ire!

  • 15 Big Pappa Cissé // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:10 AM

The Ox & Barkley should be starting .

  • 16 Thump // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:12 AM

Honestly, it was quite positive. The heat took it out of everybody in the second half and Italy clearly just had more desire. All in all, I’m amazed we cut it as close as we did. Some static attacking, though.

  • 19 catchy in norway // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:14 AM

noooo way , were u watching with brail glasses ?

Stirling was our best and only positive player

  • 20 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:14 AM

    Well that was f**king awful

  • 21 Blackley and Brownlie // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:14 AM

Baines shows no ambition. Rewind two years.

We need a target man, an out and out goalscorer. We had nothing when sturridge went off. Should have taken defoe. Got to give lambert a go.

  • 22 catchy in norway // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:15 AM

for me only Rodney was worse than him

    Rodney trotter = Rooney

  • 25 toonking // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:22 AM

sure your not just following on from some of the earlier posts others have made saying welbeck shouldn’t have started?

you look at rooney and welbeck both in the wide position of either side and you will se two completely different players.

welbeck never left Johnson too isolated
rooney did very little at all and got baines very annoyed.

welbeck- always looked for the right pass.
rooney- only decent pass all game was the cross for that goal.

welbeck- was always getting himself into the space and did well when ever he had the chance.
rooney- stood about did little movement, missed sitters and even tackled his own team mate.

  • 26 Blackley and Brownlie // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:24 AM

Nobody of the quality of peter beardsley. No natural out and out goalscorer like lineker.

  • 27 Belfast // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:24 AM

    I still believe.

  • 28 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:25 AM

Sterling Barkley and Lallana were the only positives in that game

The back four were awful, hart was suspect Gerrard and Henderson were invisible letting Pirlo yet again have the freedom of midfield

And starting with 3 CF’s with only one playing as a CF?
Rooney shouldn’t be so deep and Welbeck just shouldn’t be on the pitch, seriously why play him as a winger? He’s to scared to take on the FB and doesn’t make runs Lallana should of started in front of him all day
As for Johnson, Christ if he’s the best RB in the country were in deep trouble awful awful player

  • 29 manxpie // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:26 AM

wellbeck played very well like 10 times better than rooney

wat annoyed me about there second goal harte jumped inside the post!

if he had turned a degree he would have saved it and he had plenty of time!

if ya gonna play rooney he needs to play in the middle or not at all

barkley n sterling can both play wide so don’t understand that descision at all and llalana

uraguay looked shit tho so we have a chance

  • 30 beermonkey // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:26 AM

    welbeck did well
I didn’t want him in there but some of his off the ball play and his tackling and interseptions was good
fair play to him rooney was dire apart from the cross

  • 31 Belfast // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:26 AM

Don’t think I’ve ever seen Rooney on the left tbh

  • 32 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:27 AM

Barkley laid it off for Rooney he didn’t tackle him

Honestly mate i have no idea what Welbeck you were watching because he did none of the things you’ve mentioned apart from not leaving Johnson, mainly because he stood next him, when you lay the ball off your supposed to run not just stand there staring

  • 33 toonking // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:29 AM

    B&B 21

that target man we are missing is the player who has lost out through injury. that player is carroll, I think the day he moved to Liverpool was his biggest mistake, weather it was a request or he got forced I will never know but his time with Newcastle was certainly the sign of an up coming England player with the goals and assists in him.

  • 34 Blackley and Brownlie // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:29 AM

My mother is 66 and could play like pirlo given the same amount of space and time. She could have scored that goal balotelli got too. Very decent player my mother. Not everybody’s mother could do that.

  • 35 Belfast // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:30 AM

I thought Stand wellbeck done alright

  • 36 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:31 AM

Great people going over the top about Rooney already.

With most players they would say he was out of position….

He was great in build up with one touch passing.

Baines was weak defensively but just as bad WITH the ball! Talk about indecisive!

  • 37 manxpie // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:32 AM

    tads llalana really??

he was only on for a bit tbf but looked a bit headless
and welbeck played well for me especially in and around the box in the 1st half

agree with sterling n barkley plus cahill

  • 38 catchy in norway // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:32 AM

u sure , for me he kept trying to cut in , never kept any width, sure he may have helped cover Johnson , but is his secondary job ,

an for the record I never read any earlier comments,

trouble with any England manager is he has to pick who the FA tell him to , Man U have more fans than Southampton , thus Man U players will always get picked ahead of Southampton players for the sake of shirt sales

    little bit cynical I know

  • 39 Blackley and Brownlie // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:33 AM

Carroll was unlucky not to go. He could have done a job after sturridge went off. Still prefer defoe though.

  • 40 toonking // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:33 AM

well if rooney was not stealing the ball from barkley then I don’t know why barkley looked so annoyed and also they commentators are lieing because it was made out to sound more like barkley wanted to keep the ball.
why else would they have shown the replay?

  • 41 Belfast // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:35 AM

  • 42 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:37 AM

    Lallana’s touch is pretty silky.

The closest thing to Iniesta that we have.

  • 43 sweendog // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:37 AM

I’m an Irish toon supporter but England did look good . good to see they decided to attack .. Hope they get through the group fazes.. But how good is pirlo

  • 44 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:40 AM

Mate he laid it off the ball was about 8 yards away from Barkley who was about to run into 3 defenders ffs

He came on and made things happen, if Baines wouldn’t of been so poor he would of been in the end if some decent 1-2’s plus made a great run and won a free kick which we should of done better with

  • 45 manxpie // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:42 AM

  • 47 Tinman // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:42 AM

Can’t hide the hurt. Best England performance for a long time for me. Always looked dangerous, but undone by two moments of quality. Roy please start Sterling and Barkley next game
Rooney showed signs but not enough.
Welbeck worked hard, but so do I for my pub team

  • 48 toonking // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:45 AM

weather it was a ball being layed off to rooney or rooney himself stealing the ball off barkley, we don’t need to debate this really as my guess is we both didn’t like rooneys overall performance?

  • 49 toonking // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:48 AM

he started with sterling as the CAM.
the ones who didn’t start was lallana, barkley and ox.

  • 50 manxpie // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:49 AM

i agree with the baines part tads but tbh wellbeck did easily more in the first half

llalana does need to start no doubt but to say he was a positive is a bit much tbh in that game

i think it should be llalana on the left and rooney in the middle and sterling on the right or swap rooney for barkley

from the start but welbeck did well in that 1st half for me

  • 51 toonking // Jun 15, 2014 at 1:55 AM

rooney moved into the centre and sterling moved out wide!

you sound as bad as the England managers and papers are.

Why on earth would you want to remove our best player of the night out of the position he was in today and then put a player who was one of the worst players of the might and has did poor in a number of tournaments for England into that position?

why not just drop rooney and start lallana, barkley or ox?

  • 52 manxpie // Jun 15, 2014 at 2:02 AM

toonking yeah and rooney should have scored in that position

its not just 1 game like!

rooney should never have played out wide thats my point and 39 goals for england proves that

sterling is however a wide player and has been since he started for liverpool!

  • 53 manxpie // Jun 15, 2014 at 2:06 AM

oh and toonking he did his best work out wide btw

  • 54 toonking // Jun 15, 2014 at 2:10 AM

he might have scored goals for England but the goals that he has scored are goals against sides which are happy enough to make it through the qualifying stage, the thing he hasn’t did is score a goal in a world cup, they are the goals we really want to be scored by players.

also why would we want to start a player who might not even be in the next world cup when we could give barkley ox or lallana the XP needed for the next world cup?

  • 55 Sazzer // Jun 15, 2014 at 2:12 AM

You can’t complain too much about having Lallana and Barkley, Wilshere come on when everyone is tired. It wasn’t the worst idea and the subs came early enough to be almost risky considering late injuries.

That game was played in a sauna after all and Italy will make you chase the ball.

It was an even game but Italy had a special set-piece up their sleeves. (Pardew take note).

  • 56 lesh // Jun 15, 2014 at 2:21 AM

Update from cwarr who’s posted with the name of our new, Monday signing.

    According to him it’s….

    Blackley and Brownlie’s mother!

  • 57 manxpie // Jun 15, 2014 at 2:30 AM

toonking read my post again fella

rooney needs to start in the middle or not at all simple really if ya read it!

and at 28 y/o i think he’s got plenty of time to beat the all time record if played in the right position!

sterling created 3 chances from a wide position and 1 when we scored from the middle

as i said in the post you obviously didn’t read is that barkley or rooney should start in that position

  • 58 toonking // Jun 15, 2014 at 2:45 AM

it is 2:30am and i have had a drink.

my final point of the night is if you are still insist on starting rooney in an england team when this is looking to be his 3rd poor world cup performance, well you might as well join the gang of toon fans who believe HBA is world class and consider it purely pardews fault for his form because rooney like HBA can have that odd good game but when the performances really matter he is rubbish.

if messi or ronaldo are bad in their game i’ll take my words back but if they perform like robin van persie performed when he played against spain then it says it all.

  • 59 toonking // Jun 15, 2014 at 2:47 AM

if messi or ronaldo are bad in their game i’ll take my words back but if they perform like robin van persie performed when he played against spain then it says it all, rooney is therefore just over hyped and doesn’t go in the same class as robin van persie ronaldo or messi

  • 60 Kris // Jun 15, 2014 at 3:00 AM

Uchida looking good against Ivory Coast and Gervinho. Would probably be good back-up for Debuchy.

    Honda is great too.

  • 61 Kris // Jun 15, 2014 at 3:01 AM

    And against Kalou, ofc.

  • 62 phatt knacker // Jun 15, 2014 at 3:06 AM

England have played awful football for the last 6-8 years but tonight i have seen the spark that had been missing. Gerrards 30-40 yards passes out wide were top notch. The threat we carry going forward will grow and we can learn alot from this defeat. 6pts will see
us through. Next euros will see this team blossom 🙂

  • 63 ilovetoon8788 // Jun 15, 2014 at 3:44 AM

Rooney is just a slightly over average player overhyped by the English media as usual. glorifying and trying to put him in the world class bracket. he was there briefly and left long ago.

He’s no where even near the boots of Persie Messi Ronaldo now. hope hodgson gives the youngsters like barkley a chance instead.

  • 64 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Jun 15, 2014 at 4:49 AM

@ilovetoon – I think that’s patently untrue. His goals record alone would qualify any foreign player to be classed as very good.

Honestly, maybe it’s hyperbole or reactionary but does no one remember the first half of this season?

Everyone was saying he was keeping Man United afloat as the only one playing really well.

I can’t understand why people are saying he’s had some abject season, he’s had a better season than Van Persie.

I believe he genuinely is treated differently by many people compared to other players- if he’s not unbelievably good then he gets criticised.

  • 65 swemag // Jun 15, 2014 at 5:11 AM

Really liked the looks of Serge Aurier playing for Ivory Coast. Two quality crosses and good overall play.

We already got Debuchy…but if he would leave.

Young, good engine and quality crosses.

  • 66 jimmysmith // Jun 15, 2014 at 5:23 AM

England were unlucky there and might have got a point or more on another day. Sterling and Sturridge looked terrific and the team that finished the game, with Sturridge on in place of Lambert looks our best side. Problems defensively though. Baines looked lacking in self belief and Cahill appears the only defender of genuine quality, and Rooney and Gerrard were not at their best, but that surely suggests that the side has more to show in the coming games. I like this England side more than any I can remember since perhaps Euro 96.
