Even before the World Cup started last week, PSG and Roma were both said to be interested in signing Newcastle star full back Mathieu Debuchy, and Mathieu had a more than decent game in France’s easy 3-0 win against Honduras in their first game, in which Moussa Sissoko came on as a second half substitute to get a run-out.
Mathieu Debuchy - top Newcastle right back
And the French press have wasted no time at all in suggesting that Roma could make a move for the Newcastle right back in the summer, and they mention that former Lille manager Rudi Garcia is now doing very well as Roma manager, and he had them in second place last season in the Italian League, behind only Juventus.
The French web-site Mercato365 is reporting the Roma manager is watching Mathieu closely during the World Cup, but of course he already knows a lot about Debuchy, after managing him at Lille to the French Championship back in 2011 – when Yohan Cabaye was also in that side, but Debuchy is also a much improved player now at Newcastle.
And earlier this summer the French right back didn’t exactly go out of his way to say he was staying at Newcastle this summer, and when asked about rumors of him moving to PSG – he simply said he would leave that to his agent.
Mathieu signed a five and a half year deal when he signed on at Newcastle in January of last year, so he is contracted to Newcastle for another four years.
And Mike Ashley will be asking at least £10M for Mathieu should top European clubs come in for him, and even more if he has an excellent World Cup, which is very possible.
We need some good players brought into Newcastle this summer, and the last thing we want to see is one of our very best players leave the club.
