This Would Be A Poor Career Move For Ben Arfa

2:26 pm, Monday, June 16th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 168 Comments

There is news in France today that Hatem Ben Arfa could be close to a move to a club in Qatari, where they pay out big money so we suppose that’s good – if money is important to him - but the football is of a poor standard.

Ben Arfa - moving to Qatar not a good career move

And if the news in Get French Football News in True, that the 27 year-old is in advanced talks and eventually signs for the club – reported to be Lekhwiya. – it would be a bad career move to make for the mercurial Newcastle winger.

Ben Arfa is good enough to play for a top European club, but as we pointed earlier today he needs to get a handle on his temperament and be more disciplined – if he is going to perform regularly at the highest level.

Lekhwiya are said to be close to agreeing a deal to take former Swansea manager Michael Laudrup on as manager, and are apparently very close to signing Hatem Ben Arfa.

And given the Qatari club seem to have money to burn, they may even offer Newcastle a decent fee for the Frenchman – who is an entertainer on the football field, which is one reason he remains popular with Newcastle fans.

It’s a sad case with the 27 year-old, that he has fell out with the Newcastle manager Alan Pardew – and it still seems premature to us to let the very talented winger leave Tyneside.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Right then who’s gonna kick things off !!

  • 2 BenbulbenMag // Jun 16, 2014 at 2:31 PM

Pity to lose Ben Arfa, on his day there are few as good as him.

I cannot even be happy with a potential large fee for him as Fashley has demonstrated time and time again that profits will not be ploughed back into the club.

jazzyp is number one, it sounds like TOTP’s from the 70′s, what is your next hit jazzyp

  • 4 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 16, 2014 at 2:35 PM

As much as I have knocked him, this would be a crazy move for him. This sort of move should be reserved until you are 32+ as a semi retirement option.

Personally, I think HBA would be best off heading to Portugal, where he would be given opportunity to show off his ample ability. I think he would be a very good signing for the likes of Braga, Sporting etc – possibly Benfica to replace Markovic if he moves.

Arsenal could be set to miss out on striker
Alvaro Morata after Wolfsburg submitted a
£15.9m offer for the Real Madrid 21-year-old

we could get this lad if fat man realy cares about the club…

As were talking of Benny sadly leaving the club I will go for “Bye Bye Baby” by the Bay city rollers. A 1975 hit I believe lol

  • 7 Spoof // Jun 16, 2014 at 2:42 PM

The only time HBA really applied himself for us was in the run up to Euro 2012 where was was really good, but since his international career has nose dived then so has his effort for us, if his heart isn’t in the game then I feel he would be better off going to an easier league where he gets more money, not that he needs the money but can he handle the pressure of a high octane league ?, he should go to Saudi as he will be the star man, it may give him the boost he neds.

by mentioning that song by that group I hope you realise that your street cred has now plummeted lol.

  • 9 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 16, 2014 at 2:46 PM

    Croftus,
There were moments last season where I did think the penny had finally dropped for HBA, in terms of playing as a team. Just like in one or two games it looked like Pardew had worked out where he was going wrong. Sadly both reverted to type almost immediately.

I’d like nothing more than HBA to prove me wrong and show he can change, adapt and improve. But I no longer see it happening here.

I had better not mention the others I was going to pick lol.
As for Benny the final straw for me was at the Southampton game. Ask any fan who was there on his performance that day to stick up for the guy. He was hauled off at half time for good reason…..He was absolute pants

  • 12 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 16, 2014 at 2:56 PM

    Spoof,
David Bentley retired recently after failing to make the most of his natural ability due to his attitude. It is always a real shame when this happens, regardless of the player or who he plays for. So I’d love to see HBA crack it for his sake – be that with us or not.

I hope for the same, preferably with a foreign team mind, look at George Best and Paul Gascoigne, they done terrific but they should have done so much more, Best retiring at 26ish, not exactly sure and Gazza just never growing up, it happens all the time but when its from your club or your part of the world it just means so much more, we got beat on penalties off Germany in the semi’s but Gazza nearly scored the golden goal, but even without that at that tournament for me he was the best player in the world, and he was local, that really does fill me with pride, I wish we could have him again

Not football related, but great to see Schumacher out of his coma and out of hospital. Hopefully these are the first steps to a successful recovery.

On football, anyone looking forward to Shola’s World Cup debut? I’m sure thee will be plenty of other Geordies following big Shol’s World Cup adventure! An African double tonight for me, Nigeria and Ghana to win. Not sure who I want to win in Germany Portugal, although I think Germany will win.

  • 22 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 16, 2014 at 3:56 PM

Tbh HBA hasn’t been a feature of the team for the last 2 seasons

It’s a massive cop out imo to solely blame Pardew, this lad obviously has issues, falls out with team mates and managers at every club domestic and international
He looks unfit and uninterested and if he’s doing nout in the pitch then can’t see the point of him being here
Pardew, who were stuck with, clearly no longer wants the burden of him, his team mates have fallen out with him, ex international team mates are telling him to sort his head out so just move on
Came here with loads of hype but a reputation and will leave without fulfilling his potential and still have a reputation

  • 23 Mister Tuff // Jun 16, 2014 at 4:10 PM

spoof – I must say I do not have a favourite female poet. Not really into poetry but if I had to choose I would say Lord Tennyson and probably William Wordsworth.
Interesting thought however, I do not really have any female heroes -in the sporting world.

It’s a shame it hasn’t worked out, Percy is definitely the person to blame here….I’m curious though I keep reading from fans that HBA had issues with team mates or vice versa, is this true?

Has a player come out and said this or is it just a source from the club spreading vicious rumors to appease fans as he is a favourite?

  • 27 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 16, 2014 at 4:15 PM

    Tads,
If they had been saying it over here then yes, but thankfully we don’t always have the same commentary teams. They didn’t really discuss that other than mentioning once that he and Cabaye were best mates and would we see them play together again at club level in the near future.

Waiting to hear the starting line up, but if he starts I may put a cheeky bet on a Shola goalscorer bet!

We will agree to disagree on HBA issue, the only time he truly let the forward players express themselves was in the 2nd half of the season we finished 5th. Since then these lads have all played with shackles.

As for Debuchy….contracts mean nothing, players have the power these days. He will leave after the world cup and probably move to Arsenal. We would accept £10m for him I have no doubt about that.

As for HBA falling out with team mates is this just hearsay from what Percy’s PR team has said to the media or has a player come out and said yes this is true?

  • 35 Sazzer // Jun 16, 2014 at 4:43 PM

No Monday signing. No suprise…or are they going to annonce the re-signing of Shola during the Nigeria game?

  • 36 Our Toon // Jun 16, 2014 at 4:43 PM

    Jesper

It sounds to me that the club are forcing him out, blaming the guy for Spurs result and then feeding us BS so that fans turn on him, not to dissimilar to the Cabaye story last season. Funny how whenever a favorite is going they have done something that has caused such issues that they cant be repaired?

When will this PR BS stop? More importantly when will we stop believing the dribble that comes out from this regime?

    Nolan
    Barton
    Enrique
    Carroll
    Cabaye

Debuchy will be 29 next month, £10m minimum and he’s off!!

I agree that he has fallen out with managers and Benzema (not players) previously but as the lad said himself he was young and stupid, made mistakes he regretted (that is someone who realises the errors of his ways and has matured)

The problem is now Percy tries to blame him for everything so he argues with the manager, rightly so in my eyes as I’d have an issue with being made a scapegoat for poor management and tactics

  • 45 Ancientcoptic // Jun 16, 2014 at 4:52 PM

Hatem Ben Arfa was sat in his front room watching the television on Monday night. By the time he turned off, Newcastle had lost another game without scoring. There had been unrest in the away end at Arsenal, banners against the manager had been unfurled. The Frenchman’s name had been chanted.

As he sits overlooking the bridges on the river Tyne in a Quayside hotel, Ben Arfa insists there is no injury and attempts to talk in a placatory manner of his relationship with Alan Pardew, the manager who told the nation before the game that the player was fit but he was picking a team to win.

“I feel sad and frustrated, but not angry,” he says. “I want to help my team and I can’t. It hurts a lot. I want to take the ball and give the maximum for the team. When I see we are losing games 3-0 or 4-0, it is very hard for me and I’m on the bench. If I was involved on Saturday, I think I could make a difference. I would like to try.

“Every player needs confidence,” he adds. “Every player in the world needs confidence to show their best. It is hard to come in during games and it is very hard for the player if you’re substituted at half-time, like I was against Southampton. It hurt me. I had tried, it was very hard.

“It’s not easy because when you come on and we’re 2-0 down and everybody wants you to do something great. I think it’s better if you start the game and it’s 0-0. After that you can lift your game up. When I come on with 20 minutes or 30 minutes left I give my best and sometimes it’s good and sometimes it’s not good. But I give my best.

“Of course it hurts me [not playing] because I’m competitive. I want to play and I want to help my team. Of course, I want to play every game. That is not my decision. I train hard. I try to start but if I’m not starting, or on the bench, I have to respect the decision.”

“Yeah, it was very difficult [watching the Arsenal game]. I was at home watching on TV. It was hard because we have lost too many times, 3-0, 4-0, 3-0. It is hard when you love the supporters, it is hard to lose every time like that.”

“If the manager doesn’t pick me, he doesn’t pick me. I don’t have any problems with team-mates. All I know is that I want to train and I want to play and that’s it. I’m just here to play football. I can’t be the only reason for the problem. I can only do so much and I am not on the pitch.

“On the pitch I think I can offer my flair, my creativity offensively. I take initiative positively and I try every time to do something. I think I can give a lot for the club. I just want to play. I’m fit. I’m not injured. I’m ready to play.

“If the manager says to me he doesn’t believe in me for next season, I still want to stay, I want to stay but if the president [owner Mike Ashley] wants to sell me, I have to go then. I want to stay here even if the manager doesn’t believe in me, because I will show him I can play here.

“Of course my family and friends ask my why I’m not playing, but the people who are more surprised are the supporters here. They come up to me and ask me why I’m not playing and I say, ‘I don’t know.’ My dream is to be in the top four next season with Newcastle, to get into the Champions League or to win a cup. That is my dream.”

What a trouble maker eh, he sounds like a real devil! The guy has a real stinking attitude!!!!

  • 46 Our Toon // Jun 16, 2014 at 4:59 PM

    Ancientcoptic

I hadn’t come across that before but it speaks volumes mate, it’s a classic case of scapegoating a player and using his past issues with attitude problems as the perfect excuse!! I remember watching that game and Alan Smith even had a go at Percy by saying he isn’t even looking to get a goal yet his team is losing makes no sense to me.

  • 48 Lost Plot // Jun 16, 2014 at 5:00 PM

If Shola does have a good game tonight .. Does it mean that it’s our training techniques that are to be assessed?

Pards seems to get blame for our under performing players .. Even when he loses his best .. Surely that’s out of his hands?!

Hopefully the signings we are after will come through whatever it takes .. Some actual class players in the making considering they ain’t A-Star names as yet!

As was said in earlier posts since we’ve missed World Cup deadline for draughting in names .. Would be good if we are monitoring the up and coming stars of the future (will be at a price though)

Sure MN Utd n Chelsea will be clearing out the ranks (as will our European counterparts) so it gonna be tactical process all around.

Hope we finish transfer window with some added class.

Germany and Holland need to be looked at .. Blind (das Dutch) already made an impression as an out of favour starter BUT most top clubs already on the bid!

Anyway .. Gonna watch Portugal noo :-)

  • 49 Tsunki // Jun 16, 2014 at 5:04 PM

I hope for the sake of HBA, Debuchy and others that leave and start playing well elsewhere. Perhaps then not only the fans will see we have a cro-magnon coaching mob but Ashley might see that a good manager will turn good players into much better ones, rather than selling them for a small profit because they are a little more experienced and haven’t been slaughtered by the PL.

  • 50 Tsunki // Jun 16, 2014 at 5:18 PM

Btw Spoof I had a reply to your post previous thread but it didn’t poet and can’t be bothered to rework it :(

Gist of it was that none of the players you mentioned that have since fared worse were any good to start with, and those that have done better started here as purchases from an exploitable market using Mr Carr as Procurement Agent, and not as ‘improved’ players by any means except possibly by virtue of being tested in the PL.

Ronaldo is a cocky devil -good player though that Pepe is mad for doing a “Pardew nutt job” he has let all his teammates down by his poor discipline -which he has a history of.

Am i the only one thinking that ben arfa is still a great talent.
if he just hit the gym over the summer and lost the fat he got last summer he can be back to his okayish self from 3 years ago.

  • 164 Blackley and Brownlie // Jun 16, 2014 at 10:48 PM

I thought Shola was terrific tonight if I’m honest. I haven’t given up hope that we can persuade the big man to sign another contract but Mike has made it clear that the terms have to be right for Newcastle United.

It’s a difficult scenario for sure, a game of poker a little bit. But Sholes has been terrific in the dressing room for us and he’ll be a massive miss, 100%. It will be a new signing of a top experienced international striker if we can get him to put pen to paper, no doubt about it.

  • 165 Graeme // Jun 16, 2014 at 11:01 PM

Blackly – allegedly Shola has offers in the Middle East, Australia and the USA MLS.

Any one of them will pay him far more than NUFC will. He would be crazy to stay and we would be crazy for offering him another Contract. NUFC and Shola are now history. Good luck to him, I hope he gets a fantastic contract, 2 or 3 times better than he was on at NUFC which sets him & his family up for life.

  • 166 Thump // Jun 16, 2014 at 11:10 PM

@Blackley: I don’t know, I think it might be good in the long term. He needs to get out, see how different clubs operate and bring his experience to their dressing rooms. It’s clear that at some point he’ll come back in a coaching role or something and at that point, he’ll have even more to bring to our dressing room.

I reckon he’ll be a fantastic manager in the future, and the only way he can become a fantastic manager is if he gets out their and experiences other clubs.
