Newcastle tried to sign Bafetimbi Gomis all last summer, and after even agreeing a fee with his club Lyon – which is no small matter for Newcastle these days – Joe Kinnear for some reason failed to sign him – reported to be his wages – and Newcastle couldn’t get the job done.
Bafe Gomis – is he just interested in the money?
And of course now Bafe is a free agent and one year older, and he turns 29 in August.
And while there have been differing reports on Gomis – it has been reported that we have offered him a £2M signing on fee and £70K/week in wages – and that news is still being reported today in some outlets – but that doesn’t sound like the Ashley-run Newcastle – the latest we hear today is that he is in negotiations with Chinese club Shanghai Shenua.
One reason players wind down their contracts and become free agents, is that they can get a very good compensation package when they move, because the buying club does not have to pay a transfer fee.
Shanghai Shenua is the club Didier Drogba joined in 2012 but stayed there only eight months at £200K/week, and played 11 games for them and scored 8 goals, before deciding to move to Turkish giants Galatasaray in January of last year.
This is what Chris Adkins of ESPN has tweeted this morning about Bafe:
¨I’m being told talks are taking place between Bafetembi Gomis and Shanghai Shenhua over a move next month.¨
So one reason you join the Chinese club is for the money, and certainly not for the football, which is of a poor standard, and if Bafetimbi is interested in going there, why don’t Newcastle just call time on our pursuit of the French International?
In the past we have had far too many players join Newcastle late in their career for the money – and it seems they can now get a much better deal with Shanghai Shenua – and maybe that’s the club we should direct them to?
If this news is accurate he should probably just sign on with the Chinese club, but then again there’s always West Ham and QPR.
What do you think?
Note: Just arrived back in Raleigh with one of my sons Paul – after we spent three days in the Blue Ridge mountains of western North Carolina, and we stayed at Boone and Blowing Rock – the scenery is just fantastic there – absolutely superb – but we didn’t bump into Lee Charnley, who is also supposed to be on a short break right now, at least according to the Journal. 😀
It’s a bit cooler out there these days – today it’s 94 degrees F in Raleigh.
