It Could Be Time To Give Up On This Transfer Target

Newcastle tried to sign Bafetimbi Gomis all last summer, and after even agreeing a fee with his club Lyon – which is no small matter for Newcastle these days – Joe Kinnear for some reason failed to sign him – reported to be his wages – and Newcastle couldn’t get the job done.

bafetimbi gomis -lyon-2-buts_20735_w460

Bafe Gomis – is he just interested in the money?

And of course now Bafe is a free agent and one year older, and he turns 29 in August.

And while there have been differing reports on Gomis – it has been reported that we have offered him a £2M signing on fee and £70K/week in wages – and that news is still being reported today in some outlets – but that doesn’t sound like the Ashley-run Newcastle – the latest we hear today is that he is in negotiations with Chinese club Shanghai Shenua.

One reason players wind down their contracts and become free agents, is that they can get a very good compensation package when they move, because the buying club does not have to pay a transfer fee.

Shanghai Shenua is the club Didier Drogba joined in 2012 but stayed there only eight months at £200K/week, and played 11 games for them and scored 8 goals, before deciding to move to Turkish giants Galatasaray in January of last year.

This is what Chris Adkins of ESPN has tweeted this morning about Bafe:

¨I’m being told talks are taking place between Bafetembi Gomis and Shanghai Shenhua over a move next month.¨

So one reason you join the Chinese club is for the money, and certainly not for the football, which is of a poor standard, and if Bafetimbi is interested in going there, why don’t Newcastle just call time on our pursuit of the French International?

In the past we have had far too many players join Newcastle late in their career for the money – and it seems they can now get a much better deal with Shanghai Shenua – and maybe that’s the club we should direct them to?

If this news is accurate he should probably just sign on with the Chinese club, but then again there’s always West Ham and QPR.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Note: Just arrived back in Raleigh with one of my sons Paul – after we spent three days in the Blue Ridge mountains of western North Carolina, and we stayed at Boone and Blowing Rock – the scenery is just fantastic there – absolutely superb – but we didn’t bump into Lee Charnley, who is also supposed to be on a short break right now, at least according to the Journal. 😀

It’s a bit cooler out there these days – today it’s 94 degrees F in Raleigh.

    Our Toon

Iam not distorting anything m8, you are making out that we have a decent squad when we clearly haven’t so you can hammer the manager, your the one distorting the basics m8 not me, look at the squad

    Krul Elliot

Debuchy (?) Willo Colo (Saylor MYM) Santon ( Haidara)

Sissoko Tiote Anita Colback ( Sammi, Ben Arfa)

    Cisse Gouffran ( Armstrong)

that is weak m8, you cannot deny that m8, and as for first choice regulars all we have lost since the season ended is Remy, say what you like about Pardew I really don’t care but what I do know is that no manager could thrive with that lot and if you feel differently to that then you must have a serious problem when it comes to players ability

@JamesToon: Our Toon seems to think that the squad is fairly strong and it’s all Pardew’s fault that we aren’t performing. Spoof is trying to say that, actually, everything’s a bit shit at NUFC right now. A relatively weak squad and a relatively weak manager and that we should focus on squad talent rather than managerial talent.

Mind, I’m drawing that completely from Spoof’s post up there.

    our team is :
    rb; debs/tav/rylor
    cb; colo/saylor/willo/mbiwa/good
    lb;santon/hairdryer/dummy
    rw;sissoko !/arfa
    cm anita/tiote/bigi/colback/abied/marv
    lw;goofy/guti/sammy/obertan
    cf;cisse/campbell/arma/perez

arguably players in the wrong positions there but i’ve stated where they play under pards mostly not where i think they should be played !

i would personaly add rolando at lw for next season also as i can see that lad doing well this season but some players arnt going to do much for quality in our squad for one reason or another and hopefully some will still leave.

I think we have a good top 10 squad, but we need 5 new players:

    1x Centre back (replace taylor/m’biwa)
    2x Creative midfielders (replace cabaye)
    2x Strikers

5 signings to not only improve the squad, but also to lift the morale and mood.

IMO we should go all out for these:

    Steven Caulker
    Clement Grenier
    Remy Cabella
    Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
    Alexandre Lacazette

But we’re talking 35-50million spending there, so it’s highly unlikely that ashley will spend that amount, but with the profits and the money he’s received from TV etc. he’s more than capable of doing that without making huge losses.

Aubameyang and Cabella can also play on the wings which gives us good versatility.

It’s obvious that these are the factors pardew likes to have in his team:

Hard workers including a catalyst, and a goalscorer.

That is why we need two catalysts and two goalscorers, so we do have a plan B.

I’m with spoof, the only creative player we had in 2014, was ben arfa, but his attitude is poor and he’s inconsistent.

The squad really needs freshening up, i think that’s played a factor over the past two years about our poor form and poor derby record.

I think you could be right with your headline. It’s time to find some other man love. Okay, Bafe looks like a real sexy beast in that picture but lets move on and put him behind us. It doesn’t mean we can’t come back to him if we get some concrete news. So what about this Campbell fella you’ve got your eye on? Any sexy pics?

but….we wont change manager ! so if we dont sign better quality players then we will do even worse than with what we have atm ! better to change something for the better that we know can change and not choose to dream about changing something that wont change and change nothing at all.

I agree with spoof to a point, we haven’t got the best squad at all, but it’s a damn site better than pardew had it showing during the 2nd half of the season.

Even when winning under Pardew there are massive flaws, players not working as a unit, in defence or attack makes us look disjointed. Also means unless the opposition have an off day, krul has a blinder, or cabaye/benny/cisse scored a wonder goal then we would get a thuming (which we have had a lot of during his time here, when the wheels come off they really do come off).

The simple solution would be better manager, more/better players…..we know for a fact that Pardew is definitely here next year, therefore we need to make sure he has better players who can win games.

I’ve said before, ideally I want a good manager with good players…..but if we are to keep a bad manager I’d rather he had good players than poor ones as good ones can win games on their own at times.

think the signings you listed are spot on to my own tbh they are the ones i would pick also but your right its not going to happen is it 🙁

we have got perez and colback and i have a sneaky suspicion ashley will stick to his 2 signings per window tactic (that has never happened yet but it’ll be his excuse) and he will say the likes of perez/good/rolando/sammy/arma/cambell/ober/marv/arfa/guti need to earn there place in the team for different reason…….what times ladbrooks open till ?

I just really don’t get why Ashley doesn’t sell us, he could get a good couple hundred mil for the club and use that to grow his sports direct/clothing empire instead of selling off stock in that.

We only just turn a profit, chicken feed compared to his SD profit, and he clearly doesn’t like watching us or he’d get a more entertaining manager in and come to the games.

He must be benefiting in a huge way to not cash in on us and instead keep selling 5% stakes in SD.

wonder is ashley takes a wage and how much it is if so as this will show as staff costs and we wouldnt blink an eye at those or even look into it if millions was paid through them.

I honestly don’t know if he pockets anything, so won’t make that claim.

But If the wage bill is in the region of 60/70 mil is there anything to say he couldn’t have a wage of 8/9/10mil stuck in there, I don’t think there is.

Would be nice to see figures from other clubs for stadium advertising income for a full season, see what it’s actually worth….anything from 2/3 to 20mil is banded around on here.

I’ll bet that if someone came to Mr Ashley and offered him £340m for NUFC he would suddenly put the price up to £400m. To him it’s all about “putting one over” the buyer / seller. If it works he’s happy, if it not he’ll just continue on as if nothing had happened.

We, as a team, solely exist to provide free advertising for Sports Direct. Well not exactly free as he receives a canny sum from TV revenues.

No. If the manager’s the biggest problem let’s say so. If he stands on the sidelines let’s boo him. If we don’t like mikey’s choice, let’s make his position untenable.
