News today that Monaco could go up against Arsenal to sign top Newcastle’s right back Mathieu Debuchy, who is currently at the World Cup in Brazil with the French squad.
Mathieu Debuchy – in France’s colors
Mathieu recently stated that he misses playing in the Champions League, and that seems to have alerted some top clubs in Europe, but if he goes he will not go cheaply, and the value put on him by Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is said to be around £12M.
Newcastle paid about half that fee to his former club Lille 18 months ago, and the 23 times capped French International could certainly follow his best friend Yohan Cabaye out of Newcastle this summer.
PSG signed Cabaye last January for £20M, and they are another club said to be interested in taking Debuchy.
Mathieu turns 29 next month, and he still has four years left on his contract at Newcastle, and he was also one of Newcastle’s best players last season.
Newcastle will be willing to sell Debuchy – but only at the right price – but then that means we will need to bring in another top right back this summer.
But first things first, and it’s unlikely any deal will be completed until after the World Cup ends in Brazil in a couple of weeks time.
And if France make the World Cup final and even win the whole thing, then Mathieu’s price could even go higher than £12M.
At Newcastle these days money is king, and the actual squad and replacing players even seems to be of secondary importance as Newcastle United Football Club is run completely as a business by owner Ashley – pure and simple.
But maybe that’s why we are a middle of the league table at best these days?
It would not surprise us too much this summer if Mathieu does leave Newcastle.
