Newcastle Players Advance To World Cup Quarter Finals

7:19 pm, Monday, June 30th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 90 Comments

France beat Nigeria tonight in the round of the last 16 to reach the quarter finals of the World Cup, and Newcastle’s Mathieu Debuchy played the whole game for France, and had a good game.

FBL-WC-2014-MATCH53-FRA-NGR-FANS

Mathieu Debuchy – in action tonight

His three games at the World Cup so far has seen Mathieu show just how much he has improved in the 18 months he’s been at Newcastle, but unfortunately that probably means he will leave Newcastle when the first club comes in with a £12M bid – which is apparently the transfer fee placed ion his head by Newcastle owner Mike Ashley.

Paul Pogba got the nod over Newcastle’s Moussa Sissoko in the starting line up for France – and the Juventus man scored the all important first goal after 79 minutes.

The game was close throughout the game, but in the last 20 minutes France started to press, and they had the ball kicked off the line by Moses, and then Yohan Cabaye hit the underside of the cross-bar and the ball came out – and the technology showed it did not go over the line.

But then a poor clearance by goalkeeper Nyema, who could only paw away a cross, saw Pogba take his chance and he headed the ball into an empty net to put the French ahead with only 11 minutes remaining.

France were fairly comfortable in those final minutes and then four minutes into the five minutes of added time, French play-maker Valbuena laid on France’s second goal, and his cross was put into this own net by former Everton defender Yobo.

That was good play by the Frenchman, as it looked like France would just hold the ball near the corner flag to see out the game.

With two minutes to go Newcastle’s Moussa Sissoko had come on, and he has so far played in all of the France’s World Cup games, starting two of them, and Moussa has also been in good form.

Shola Ameobi, who will be off the payroll at Newcastle tomorrow, did not make an appearance in this game.

France now play the winner of the Germany – Algeria game, which kicks off at 9:00 pm UK time.

It’s great to see the Newcastle players advance to the round of the last eight.

Comments welcome.

A Sportsman evening Rob Lee and Don Goodman will take place on Friday evening, July 11th at Hedworth Hall, so if you would like to attend this exciting event here is the information.

Somebody posted earlier on that our payers vulnerable for sale were
    Krul
    Santon
    Debuchy
    Sissoko.
It is probable that Santon wants to stay on Tyneside -so exclude him.
I would potentially add Mr T -but I think he’s happy here and probably Percy might not want to sell him.
So it looks as if Debuchy is going to fund some bargain basement players – I would be very surprised if we sign any 10 million+ players.
I think we are goiung to turn into a club just interested in finding potentially good players -with the ultimate purpose of not building a quality team -but to flog them on quickly at a profit. No consideration will be given to producing a quality team/quality football.

  • 2 lochinvar // Jun 30, 2014 at 7:36 PM

According to the French clubs we are trying to buy players from their price goes up because of the World Cup. So Mr. Ashley please ask £20m for Debuchy then he can join … a French club. Seems like a fair deal. C’est la vie as they say in Byker.

    Online
His actual offices are in Shirebrook bud right behind the massive warehouse that is Sports direct. I only live a couple of mile away but have never had my opportunity to voice my concern on what he is actually trying to achieve with Nufc

  • 5 Mister Tuff // Jun 30, 2014 at 8:07 PM

online cheers -I think a lot of diehard fans/those who would watch Newcastle tops on a washing line/zebra watchers are realising albeit sometimes slowly -that there is nothing really on the horizon to look forward to.
hence a slow erosion of the fans hopes and aspirations.
When there were discussions on here about the advertising some time ago – my research into Spurs revealed they had a waiting list for ST’s to the tune of 47,000 if I recall correctly. Compare that with us now -we are going backwards.

  • 6 roblee7 // Jun 30, 2014 at 8:09 PM

Does anyone else here think Ed should be given, somehow, some sort of recognition for all the work he puts in to this site? The guy writes articles wether on holiday, I’ll, you name it, Ed works his arse off for us fans through thick and thin. An MBE would be nice, or a statue outside St James….haha.seriously though, wish there was some way of doing this, a total legend and I for one am very grateful to have the pleasure of following the best blog in the land, been reading for what feels like years. The club should reward him!!!! ….ah, hold on, this is MA we’re talking about…

  • 7 roblee7 // Jun 30, 2014 at 8:10 PM

That was meant to say ill, not I’ll sorry, predictive txt, grrrrr

  • 8 Pizzicato The Arizona Geordie // Jun 30, 2014 at 8:10 PM

Ed should run for the chairman. MA just needs to give us the money.

  • 9 Belfast // Jun 30, 2014 at 8:13 PM

I’d be happy to give Ed my blue peter badge Rob lee ?

  • 10 Thump // Jun 30, 2014 at 8:13 PM

@jesper: Nah, mate. Wor lass lives down here. Moved to London with her while she finished Uni and then moved to Brighton (where she’s from) for the slightly cheaper cost of living… now we’re skint and moving to Newcastle (where I’m from) for cost of living that’s actually bloody affordable!

  • 11 gar69 // Jun 30, 2014 at 8:15 PM

You know all of us supporters want the team to do well the club to be respected and have players wanting to come to Newcastle to play in front of 52,000 passionate fans every home game but the reality is we have an owner and manager who both don’t seem to understand the pride and passion of the supporters and seem quite happy to run our club into the ground. People/supporters need to play the long game and not be so short sighted. Stay away from the ground and don’t buy NUFC merchandise. Those who say they are supporting the team and not the regime by attending matches are just deluding themselves. Stay away and show your contempt for the current owner. It might just work.

  • 12 roblee7 // Jun 30, 2014 at 8:15 PM

Belfast, haha.seriously, I don’t know he manages it day in day out. I can only put it down to pure passion for NUFC?

  • 13 Belfast // Jun 30, 2014 at 8:22 PM

Yeah he does a good job…

I wouldn’t just give my blue peter badge to any tom, dirk or Harry you know.

  • 14 roblee7 // Jun 30, 2014 at 8:25 PM

Belfast….if we got in touch with the chronicle or journal I’m sure they’d do something ;)

  • 15 lesh // Jun 30, 2014 at 8:34 PM

roblee7 and all others supporting some recognition for Ed, yes I’m sure the Journal/ Chron would do a nice spread on him and his wife, whose love she shares with Newcastle United.

And, it’d be nice if Charnley were to treat him and his wife to a good day at SJP.

    However,

  • 16 Belfast // Jun 30, 2014 at 8:38 PM

  • 24 Belfast // Jun 30, 2014 at 8:53 PM

He can barely move in those trousers like. Definitely time to go up a size

  • 25 roblee7 // Jun 30, 2014 at 8:57 PM

Bit old news but Hull are making intersting moves in the transfermarket. Two goalscoring and assist making wingers in Snodgrass and Ince.

  • 35 Graeme // Jun 30, 2014 at 10:18 PM

Taco – even more woryying, they way this ship is sinking, there could be no NUFC in the top 2 divisions of the Football League, by the time the next World Cup comes around!!

Anyone seen the supposed new home kit?

Remember when some of us,joke about changing our stripes to red and white or getting rid of them? Well the supposed new kit has about a quarter of the stripes missing from the top (tits) area of the shirt!

    debuchy is worth 12mill min

  • 52 welshgeordie9 // Jun 30, 2014 at 11:00 PM

i just saw that on nufcfans

He’s not worth 10 million, and Debuchy is not worth 12 million, unbelievable how the money side of it spoils football

  • 53 welshgeordie9 // Jun 30, 2014 at 11:02 PM

the amount paid for Luke shaw, has one good season.

  • 54 santonthenewmaldini // Jun 30, 2014 at 11:06 PM

We should be looking for at a minimum 20 million for Debuchy ! He is better than Shaw and Glen Johnson who went for crazy prices

This guy is Frances number 1 right back , is proven in the premier league even under Pardew will be raging if we sell him for 12 million to Arsenal hes worth more than that in todays market

Also watching Cabaye for France passing it about like a maestro we did not get the full price for him that we should have !!

The thing that is disturbing reading is the paper talk saying that we need to offload Jonas, Obertan and Marveux before we will get any players in to take their squad place as I doubt we will have any takers whatsoever !! But that should not stop us buying Cabaye, Remy , Ba , De Jong and Shola replacements !! Deal with getting the duds out the squad once we have signed players not the other way around … I despair with this club sometimes !!

  • 55 Sliema // Jun 30, 2014 at 11:09 PM

So Jabba has spent 15 million on two players before the window has even opened. That’s a shitload of money for Hull to spend.

He’s spent it Livermore and Snodgrass?!

OMFG British players are a rip-off!

  • 56 Ancientcoptic // Jun 30, 2014 at 11:11 PM

It does not really matter what the design of the Newcastle top will be like. With Wonga across the front of it… I wouldn’t be wearing one on a dare.

The skip has already been ruined.

  • 57 Sliema // Jun 30, 2014 at 11:12 PM

AC Milan got £50million for Zlatan and Thiago Silva. Southampton got £60million for Shaw and Lallana.

    That’s seriously mental

  • 58 beermonkey // Jun 30, 2014 at 11:12 PM

    welsh

depending how far france go in the world cup his value could go up as he looks to be there first choice right back

  • 59 Belfast // Jun 30, 2014 at 11:18 PM

If Shaw is Man Utd left back for the next ten years, that 30 million could be a very good deal.

Crazy money for an 18 year old though. Long term it looks a good signing in my opinion.

Then again he could be a flop lol

  • 60 beermonkey // Jun 30, 2014 at 11:20 PM

with both llana and shaw both move look to be expensive
but I bet both players will be at the clubs for 10 years
both look like there going to be key fixtures in the England team

lets not forget the fan base of both club also with England boosting there profile the commercial rights for the next 4 years will more than pay for tranfers

its not all about the footie image rights and branding

  • 61 welshgeordie9 // Jun 30, 2014 at 11:22 PM

some of the British players have got the cheek, i mean their have big price tag on their heads yet they were crap in the World Cup. Well i say some i meant all.

Before you start I’m not having a go, only at how much each of them are worth and don’t deliver the goods.
