France beat Nigeria tonight in the round of the last 16 to reach the quarter finals of the World Cup, and Newcastle’s Mathieu Debuchy played the whole game for France, and had a good game.
Mathieu Debuchy – in action tonight
His three games at the World Cup so far has seen Mathieu show just how much he has improved in the 18 months he’s been at Newcastle, but unfortunately that probably means he will leave Newcastle when the first club comes in with a £12M bid – which is apparently the transfer fee placed ion his head by Newcastle owner Mike Ashley.
Paul Pogba got the nod over Newcastle’s Moussa Sissoko in the starting line up for France – and the Juventus man scored the all important first goal after 79 minutes.
The game was close throughout the game, but in the last 20 minutes France started to press, and they had the ball kicked off the line by Moses, and then Yohan Cabaye hit the underside of the cross-bar and the ball came out – and the technology showed it did not go over the line.
But then a poor clearance by goalkeeper Nyema, who could only paw away a cross, saw Pogba take his chance and he headed the ball into an empty net to put the French ahead with only 11 minutes remaining.
France were fairly comfortable in those final minutes and then four minutes into the five minutes of added time, French play-maker Valbuena laid on France’s second goal, and his cross was put into this own net by former Everton defender Yobo.
That was good play by the Frenchman, as it looked like France would just hold the ball near the corner flag to see out the game.
With two minutes to go Newcastle’s Moussa Sissoko had come on, and he has so far played in all of the France’s World Cup games, starting two of them, and Moussa has also been in good form.
Shola Ameobi, who will be off the payroll at Newcastle tomorrow, did not make an appearance in this game.
France now play the winner of the Germany – Algeria game, which kicks off at 9:00 pm UK time.
It’s great to see the Newcastle players advance to the round of the last eight.
