France were beaten 1-0 by Germany last night in their quarter-final tie, and left the World Cup in a whimper, and we expect the transfer of Mathieu Debuchy to Arsenal to be announced soon, and it seems it will not be for the £12M reports have suggested owner Mike Ashley wanted.
Mathieu Debuchy – signing for Arsenal
The news being reported in L’Equipe is that it is an initial £8M rising to £10M based on how he does – in terms of appearances.
That fee has been agreed between Arsenal and Newcastle, and the Gunners will be able to offer Mathieu a decent wage, so after compensation is agreed, the next step would be his medical and then the deal will be completed.
And when the current Newcastle player removed the information that he played for Newcastle United from his Twitter account recently, that was more proof he would be leaving the Magpies. this summer.
We paid just less than £6M for the right-back from Lille a short 18 months ago, and in that time he has established himself as France’s starting right-back and has become one of the best right backs in the Premier League – presumably too good for Newcastle to keep at the club, with our limited ambitions these days under Ashley.
Joe Kinnear was sacked in February as Director of Football and one of the (many) reasons suggested for his firing was that we didn’t get full value from PSG for Cabaye, with the fee being around £20M.
But a number of Newcastle fans will think £8M for Debuchy is a give away – although he does turn 29 later this month.
Newcastle have been linked with 24 year-old Dutch International right-back Daryl Janmaat, who plays for Feyenoord as a replacement for Debuchy, and he is currently with the Dutch squad at the World Cup, and has played three full games in the tournament so far.
