Magnificent Tim Krul Holland’s Hero – Saves Two Penalties In Shootout

In an unbelievably bold move tonight, Holland manager Louis van Gaal brought on Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul with seconds to go in extra time in the 0-0 draw between Holland and Costa, for the Newcastle goalkeeper to make his World Cup debut.

Tim Krul – Holland’s hero tonight

And would you believe it,  but Tim saved two of the five penalties he faced – the only ones that were missed in the penalty shootout as Holland went through 4-3 on penalties.

Tim saved the second penalty from Costa Rica captain Bryan Ruiz and then the fifth one from Umanaand, and saved to his left each time, and is Holland’s hero tonight.

In a fairly close game Holland hit the woodwork twice through Wesley Sneijder, and really should have wrapped the game up before the penalty shoot-out, but towards the end of the extra time Costa Rica attacked, and had a couple of chances themselves to get the winning goal.

Tim has saved only 2 penalties for Newcastle in 20 penalties he has faced – but he must have been doing well in training with the penalties, as the Dutch manager boldly switched his goalkeepers just before the end of extra time.

Time went in the right direction for every one of the five penalties he faced – and his second save meant Holland were through to face Argentina in the semi-finals.

Argentina beat Belgium 1-0 with a goal from Real Madrid striker Higuaín after 8 minutes.

And Costa Rica had won their penalty shoot-out against Greece scoring all of their five penalties, and Holland had never won a World Cup penalty shoot-out.

We suppose Louis van Gaal will go down as a genius – but Tim delivered for Holland big time tonight – and as we said he is Holland’s hero tonight.

You really cannot make this stuff up. 😀

Just go ahead and sell him and bring back Forster, so poor Ashley can pocket the difference. Honestly though, I love Krul but I would be willing to bet that we could bring in Forster for much less than Krul, and use the difference on an outfield player. I would be ok with that, as long as MA followed through …

When you think about it the way the Krul substitution played out on our TVs/across the World -nobody has seen anything of the like before in a World Cup game. Both the manager and Krul would become hero or villain. It worked. Kruls’ performance will have been seen by every football owner/manager/coach/scout across the globe. He could become a very saleable item. Mr Tubbs will have the calculator out now -standy for more “leaked” stories fromSJP saying this club and that club are interested. If he is not sold over this summer I’ll eat my hat.
