Let’s Hope Some Players Can Resurrect Careers At Newcastle

Ben Arfa, Jonas Gutierrez, Sylvain Marveaux and Gabriel Obertan are four players who in the past have played well for Newcastle, yet after last season’s antics,  all four look like they could be shipped out of the club this summer, after all four were hardly used at all in the first team last season.

Jonas Gutierrez - what did he do wrong last season?

We’re not sure what Jonas did wrong to be completely neglected last season by manager Alan Pardew – and neither is he – and the Argentine ended up the season on loan at Norwich City.

Ben Arfa is for sale this summer, but the type of player Newcastle want to bring in this summer – a creative player with vision – is exactly what Ben Arfa is.

Sylvain Marveaux has never really been given an extended run in the first team, and he’s always looked like a very skillful player when he’s been given the chance by the manager.

And Gabby Obertan – maybe the most likely to leave this summer of the four – has some great skills but is just not consistent enough to play at the top level, and could move back to France this summer.

Those four players are all wingers and surely at least two of them are good enough to remain at Newcastle for the coming season, especially since we seem to be having trouble attracting players to the club this summer.

But after a disastrous second half of the season, it seems that Newcastle have decided – out with the old and in with the new – but if all four leave – there is some very decent talent Newcastle will have lost.

Jonas adds significant experience to the side, and he can also play well in multiple positions, and we’ve said often that Alan Pardew should be able to get more out of Ben Arfa than he has done over the last almost four years.

Yes we know – it’s also Ben Arfa’s responsibility to use the very significant talents he has been blessed with.

So rather than let all four of these players leave this summer, surely there is a place for say Ben Arfa, Sylvain Marveaux and Jonas in the first team squad for next season?

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

For me Ben Arfa and Marveaux should be given the opportunity this season to show us what they can do.

Ben Arfa looks fitter than he has in years on the training and assessment pictures, so if he gets a chance I hope he takes it.

Marveaux has spent the summer with a personal trainer getting himself in shape for the new season, for me he has always looked decent when given the chance, but has never had the opportunity of a sustained run in the team. Hopefully this will be his year.

I wonder though with both of these players coming back fitter and raring to go if they have not been following instructions, or demands from the club to get themselves sorted out before pre-training.

So there must be nothing happening today if this is all Ed can come up with

    Firebug,
On HBA I agree. If he can get himself to the player he should be then we should be keeping him – although with just 1 year left on his deal I expect the club will still look to move him on if they find any interested parties.

Marveaux is nothing more than a bench player. If he is happy coming off the bench for 20 minutes to unlock tired defences then great, although he has looked increasingly like that isn’t what he is looking for. I imagine the personal trainer was more to impress prospective buyers than anything else.

Guti, well he isn’t good enough anymore, and if the rumours of him getting a year extension if he plays again are true then he shouldn’t be anywhere near the pitch.

Ober I think will be reintroduced to the first team squad, mainly because no bugger is daft enough to pay us money or match his wages.

Jonas should write that out of his contract. At least that way he might get a few games. He’s Pardews type of player. A winger who spends more time covering the full-back.

This is like the long goodbye – guests who spend half the night in the hallway. Our tears have just dried. Lets not start blubbering all over again over this quartet. Ooot!
